good things - you have improved in technique, now for the bad.

serve - definitely scope for big improvement

returns of serve too high - you always put your self on the defensive

smash returns - way to high, need to learn how to counter with flat drives or pushes of smashes to control the opponents. This is why you cannot come into the net to take charge of a rally.

soft pushes - not controlled enough if you do play them.

net play - racquet head dips too low, especially after a service.

Hope Uni is good for you. I nearly went to Wimbledon Racquets this summer. Would have been on a Thursday night but just couldn't quite fit it in.

Another of the social matches we had in Bristol...

And the first Men's Doubles match of Sunday's league matches...I'm fairly okay with how I played, considering the lengthy break I had to take. While I see quite a few things to improve upon, I'm curious as to what you guys think - so let me know!

PS: Since we're both tall and thin and wear green shirts, take a look at the shoes - I'm wearing the SHB87Ltd (grey/orange) ;)

Is that the normal way you guys warm up? Is that bald guy your friend and trying to be funny?
That move at 25-30 seconds! haha. For the rest of the time it was just smashing drive clears at you and covering off net kill opportunity haha.

Well, I thought I had cut that out :D It's less of a warmup and more a quick little re-warming - we played about 4-6 games each on that day, and most of us didn't have long rest times in-between. My warmup is way more extensive than that ;)
And yeah, the bald guy is trying to be funny most of the time - to be fair though, I actually do find him funny quite often as well ;) We banter whenever we see each other, which is -usually- once a year, and it transitions into our games :D I have two more, but didn't cut and upload them yet. There might be a few funny moments in them, I haven't viewed them all that thoroughly yet.

Ben, ~6:00 (MD2 game) so they tip the shuttle and make it miles too slow? Well done them...

Your partner needs to drop less, smash more, and smash straighter, well play straighter in general. It's like he's trying to take you out of the rally sometimes.

I think you played pretty well tbh. You still need to get your racket higher when at the front. You miss-played a couple of more technical strokes, like reverse slice and cross court drop, but you'll get those back pretty quickly, no doubt.

    I know that place... ;)

It's refreshing to see somebody play actual badminton there.

After having watched your first video, there's a few things I noticed. First, you take a sideways stance a lot of the time, often when it's actually putting you at a disadvantage - in defence, for example. You need to have your feet parallel to the net when you're longline from the shuttle and just very slightly turned towards the shuttle if you're defending crosscourt. A few times you get caught on that and can't defend because you get tangled up.

Another matter is that all of you have very pan-handle-y technique, which forces you to take the shuttle further in front of your body on the forehand side than with proper grip. It's not a huge issue, but in singles it would be more impactful. Fixing it would allow you to play more offensive shots when the shuttle is beside/behind your body.
In addition, none of you seem to be using a thumb grip on your backhand (or the adjusted version for overhead/net play). That really, really limits your possibilities on your backhand and prevents you from playing good, fast drives.

Third, your footwork. You rarely do a split-step. It doesnt have to be a big jump and actual split all the time, but you should be doing a small movement downwards every time your opponent strikes the shuttle. That is especially important in defense (in case you need to move forward quickly to retrieve a drop shot) and flat play (in case you need to react rapidly in order to play an offensive shot), and also when you're contesting the net (in order to explode towards the shuttle when your opponent plays a net shot back).

A small btw - your opponent in black should lower his tension. His technique is flawed all the way, he should not play rackets harder than medium stiff and tensions should never exceed 11kg. 10,5 would be more appropriate. I see a tennis elbow cuff on his arm, I'm guessing he has some trouble there - using tensions beyond his capability will not help with that!

I meant that you people actually know how to play badminton. Most of the guys that play at that place are total beginners and the way they play makes me shiver. ;)

    Hi J4ckie,
thanks for the very details of your comments.
will try to go through and work on them one by one on our next match.

btw, your observation regarding my opponent in black was correct, he does has a problem with his elbow, have no idea what's the tension of his racket, will ask him :)
