interesting article that said the 5th ranked Malaysian pair Choong/Lee should be aware of the "lower ranked" players, namely, Sigit/Wijaya, Tony/Halim, Lee/Yoo and Kim/Ha (is Kim even playing MD?). and they should be less wary of the higher ranking pairs of Flandi/Eng and the 3 Danish pair.

Agreed, the Danish pairs are only at the top because they play alot more tournaments that the Indonesian pairs. I wonder how Flandi/Eng got up there..... oh well, the main threats i would say are Candra/Sigit

In fact, the top 4 pairs in the world ranking do not really possess the capability of bagging the WC title. It is the number of tournaments they have competed that brought them up to such a 'good' ranking!!!

Agreed, not so much for the case of Flandi/Eng, they have participated in fewer touranments than the other top pairs like Erikson/Larsen. However, all the credit to the top pairs for getting there, they just have to worry about the rising stars.....

Re: NEWS: WC MD: there will be a lot of

A little math experiment:

The IBF ranking points are calculated thus:
Total number of points divided by number of played tournaments. If a pair/player has played less than 8 tournaments then 8 is used as the divisor. Very few players/pairs have actually played 8 tournaments or more during the last 12 months. So, if we experimentally scrap this rule and instead divide by ACTUAL number of played tournaments the Men's Doubles rankings would start like this:

1. (8) Gunawan/Haryanto, 3 tournaments, 422 points
2. (6) Lee/Yoo, 4 tournaments, 331 points
3. (7) Wijaya/Budiarto, 4 tournaments, 324 points
4. (18) Wijaya/Gunawan, 3 tournaments, 320 points
5. (12) Ha/Kim, 4 tournaments, 295 points
6. (2) Limpele/Hian, 7 tournaments, 273 points
7. (3) Sogaard/Laugesen, 7 tournaments, 270 points
8. (4) Lundgaard/Paaske, 7 tournaments, 251 points
9. (1) Eriksen/Larsen, 9 tournaments, 247 points
10. (5) Choong/Lee, 7 tournaments, 242 points

(Current IBF ranking in parenthesis)

It is really statistically impossible to rank players like this. But it's still interesting. Note that Zhang/Zhang (9) and Archer/Robertson (10) are out, while Wijaya/Gunawan and Ha/Kim are new...

Considering how few pairs/players have actually played at least 8 tournaments (in the top 100, it's 49% in MS, 31% in WS, 11% in MD, 8% in WD, 8% in MX!!!) I think it's clear that the IBF must revise their ranking system.

Lowering the tournament threshold (to perhaps 6) will produce less statistically reliable numbers, but when hardly any players play more than 8 tournaments in a year the rankings are already out of order...

The best solution would of course be if all players just entered more tournaments! :)

Duh - forgot about those smileys... Sorry!

Gunawan/Haryanto are currently ranked 8, and Wijaya/Gunawan are 18.
