INDONESIAN pair Candra Wijaya-Sigit Budiarto have brushed aside any threat posed by experienced Malaysian doubles pair Choong Tan Fook-Lee Wan Wah as they set their sights on a second World Championships title in Birmingham.

The dynamic pair were not seeded but managed to win the All-England title at the same venue in March. For the World Championships, they are the 11th seeds and have been drawn to face Tan Fook-Wan Wah in the opening round of the men's doubles tie played at National Indoor Arena today.

The 1997 world champions are confident they will come out tops in their meeting today against the Malaysian pair, to whom they have never lost before.

Candra, who formed a highly successful combination with Tony Gunawan and won gold in the Sydney Olympics three years ago, does not see any problem in overcoming the Malaysian pair.

“We are confident of winning the opening match. We are more than ready for this competition. We have been waiting for it for some time,” said the 28 year-old.

He added that they would employ their usual shock and awe tactics.

“Tan Fook-Wan Wah are experienced and they can play an attacking game as well. But we will be ready to attack them from the start. We do not want to give any chance to them to respond. It is easier if we can win the first game to put pressure on them,” he added.

Candra-Sigit took their first world title in Glasgow '97 but the pair were forced to split after Sigit had to serve out a suspension for a doping offence.

They resumed their combination two years ago and the pair have since proven on many occasions that they are still at the top of their game.

Candra-Sigit have beaten the Malaysian pair seven times but they acknowledged that they would be careful not to drop their guard.

“Although we have beaten them many times, that was in the past. We have not played them for a long time and we do not know their current form.

“Regardless of this, we will try our best to keep our unbeaten record,” said Sigit.

Besides Tan Fook-Wan Wah, national number one Chan Chong Ming-Chew Choon Eng also have a tricky opening match against England's top pair Anthony Clark-Nathan Robertson.
