Top stars confirm participation

Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD: The big guns of world badminton including World No.1 Lee Chong Wei of Malaysia, World No.2 Jin Chen of China and World No. 3 Peter Gade have confirmed their participation in the BWF World badminton championship to be held here from August 10 to 16, according to V.K. Verma, president of the Badminton Association of India.

The names in the men’s section also included World No. 4 Taufik Hidayat, who won the India Open Gold Grand Prix championship here earlier this year, four-time All-England champion and two-time World champion Lin Dan, now ranked World No. 5 and Indonesian World No. 6 Sony Dwi Kuncoro, who won three consecutive Super Series singles titles last year.

In the women’s section, World No.1 Mi Zhou of Hong Kong, and World No. 3 Yian Wang of China are among those who have confirmed their participation. “The world championship should produce dream fare for badminton lovers.

This should one of the toughest events seen here for a long time.

And, India’s best hope and World No. 6 Saina Nehwal, will relish the challenge especially after her win in the recent Indonesian Open Super Series,” chief national coach Pullela Gopi Chand said.

“The championship may also renew the traditional rivalry between Lee Chong and Lin Dan, the finalists in the Beijing Olympics where the latter won the gold,” Gopi pointed out.

The Hyderabad edition should also give Taufik Hidayat a chance to prove that his Indian Open victory was no flash in the pan. Gopi said that Peter Gade of Denmark, 32, is still a major threat for the best young players.

Chong Wei Ready To Face Lin Dan In World Championship

Bernama.com
July 14, 2009

KUALA LUMPUR, July 14 (Bernama) -- World number one and Malaysia's top men's singles shuttler Datuk Lee Chong Wei will be hoping to set the records straight against Lin Dan of China when both head to Hyderabad, India for the World Championships in August.

Chong Wei who beat Lin Dan, the world number two, at the Swiss Open to gain some consolation for his loses at the Beijing Olympics final and All England final, is currently in his best form ever, after clinching the Singapore Open, Indonesian Open and Malaysian Open on a trot.

However, Chong Wei knows pretty well that the World Championships will be different ball game altogether, especially his two previous disappointing outings in Los Angeles (2005), Madrid (2006) and Kuala Lumpur (2007).

Chong Wei who despite not having fully recovered from a back injury, had already started training two weeks ago under his coach Datuk Misbun Sidek.

"The training this time is very tough but I am not complaining as I know what Misbun is doing will help me," Chong Wei told reporters here Tuesday.

Despite having tasted success in numerous tournaments, Chong Wei, a silver medallist at the Olympics, has yet to step foot in a final of the World Championships, let alone win one.

Meanwhile, Chong Wei who has been appointed the brand ambassador for 100 Plus, is expected to conduct a number of badminton clinics in Johor, Penang, Kuala Lumpur and Kota Kinabalu.

Chong Wei said despite a tight training schedule, he had decided to spend some time to help young aspiring players to learn the basics of badminton through the clinics.

"I and Misbun are involved in the programme that is aimed at promoting and developing badminton in the country," he said.

(This writer has not checked his facts correctly. LCW lost in the Singapore Open to none other than Vietnam's NTM and not even in the final. And I hope the excuse of "back injury" and time spent in the coaching clinics will not be used if LCW should lose again. In fact if LCW is still suffering from the 'injury' he should not be training so hard now! I'm not sure whether he and his coach are right on the dot about their priorities.

If only LD stay at home and not play in WC09, that would be a wish come true for Datuk...cos' winning WC crown is a big deal for Datuk and worth a lot more than just a title....if Datuk can get endorsement as reported in Badzine as follows "Lee Chong Wei received a cheque worth of 500 000 Rm (100 000 euros) as part of a 2 year deal with the Soft drink Brand 100Plus, part of the Coca Cola family. According to Malaysia's STAR newspaper, it is one of the biggest deals between a badminton shuttler and a private sponsor. Lee Chong Wei lands this contract three weeks before the world championships, hoping to live up to his status as top seed and become the first Malaysian to be crowned World champion'...just imagine what the future in terms of financial rewards would comes his way if Datuk actually win the darn thingie, break the jinz that MAS could not win the WC..and as I said before, a pro baddy player number one target is $$$ in the bank for retirement...nothing wrong with that goal and absolutely the right and smart thing to aim for.

Lin Dan might have other ideas. Apart from wanting to spoil LCW's WC dreams, he is also aiming to be the most decorated badminton player and the topmost commercially sponsored player. So not only will LD want to beat LCW on skills but also to claim the title of being the best paid badminton player in the world today. :D:p:p:p

I don't think LCW will underestimate anyone - he is no longer naive and that is why he is training so hard.

But if you were referring to us (LCW faithfuls), well, love it or not, we think no one else will beat LCW. It is in the bag. :D

It's actually to promote badminton among youngsters & grass root level cos LCW & his sifu Misbun will be conducting coaching clinics at schools or sthing like that. In the past, coaching clinics meant Misbun coach, LCW & Misbun's other students demonstrate the shots, hehe. Now, maybe LCW will have a part in the coaching.
All the while, 100 Plus sponsor junior level baddy tourneys in Msia & is supportive in the "development of youngsters" section.

Badminton needs to be promoted in Malaysia???
That's like promoting football in Brazil, isn't it?

Your first sentence should read:
"It's actually to promote 100Plus among youngsters & grass root level..." ;)

This is the first time that India will be hosting a World Championship event for an Olympic sport in over 20 years.

“It is a privilege for us to organise the World Championship. It is a landmark sporting event to be held in India,” said V.K. Verma, president, Badminton Association of India.

Pls read up the articles 1st - it was in all Msian major newspapers. For sure, they did not say to promote 100Plus, ....;). Supposed to mean 'coporate sector do their part by sponsoring sports" - since part of the deal is conducting coaching clinics for budding baddy players.
To promote means to promote playing sports competitively,BAM President said "promoting sports through sponsorships and endorsement deals." It's supposed to mean corporate sector doing their part by sponsoring sports, similar standard statements to when CIMB sponsored squash.

It's supposed to show the parents that it's good to allow their children to take up sports competitively instead of focus on academics - sthing that the Sport Ministry, et al been trying to do. I was summarisng the official statements lah.

+ 100 Plus even more no need to promote, it's a isotonic drink that's sold in all coffee shops, etc, etc. If I say promote 100Plus to youngsters & grass root, will sound very weird.:D

I have been saying for so long that I think LD is concentrating and resting his body and legs for the majors (AE, OG, WC and OLY) and the biggest goal is OLY12 and that would be history making, LD is playing SS just enough to get WR points and to KO the WR1 would be his goal. Winning the majors will guarantee LD top financial reward and that is what pro baddy is all about, pride and titles are important but second to $$$.
