IT was a double celebration at the Swiss Open Championships when Lee Chong Wei and Chan Chong Ming-Koo Kien Keat won the men’s singles and doubles titles respectively in the US$120,000 (RM425,000) season opening international badminton Grand Prix in Basel.

Chong Ming-Kien Keat started the ball rolling when they survived a tense three-game encounter against Denmark’s Mathias Boe-Carsten Mogensen to win 17-14, 8-15, 17-14 in 85 minutes.

It was Chong Ming-Kien Keat’s first international grand prix title after winning the Taiwan Open in November 2004.

The Malaysians had their share of good fortune in the tournament as two pairs, first the Danish duo of Lars Paaske-Thomas Laydourn in the quarter-finals, and then, China’s Sang Yang-Zheng Bo in the semi-finals, conceded walkovers.

Chong Wei, on the other hand, only had trouble in the early stages of the first game against China’s former world champion Xia Xuanze before winning comfortably 15-8, 15-0 to take the singles title.

In Saturday’s late semi-final matches, Chong Wei recovered from losing the first game 12-15 to beat compatriot Wong Choong Hann in the next two games 15-2, 15-3 to seal his place in the final.

However, it was the end of the road for the women’s pair of Wong Pei Tty-Chin Eei Hui who were shown the exit by China’s unseeded pair of Du Jing-Yu Yang in the semi-finals. Du Jing-Yu Yang won 15-7, 15-11.

Du Jing-Yu Yang went on to win the title, beating team-mates Zhang Dan-Zhao Tingting 15-5, 10-15, 15-11. Chong Ming-Kien Keat, who were only paired together in 2004, started the match confidently, racing to a 7-4 and 13-8 lead before allowing the Danes to fight back in the first game.

The Danes levelled the score at 14-14 but the Malaysians kept their composure to win 17-14.

But the second game was a nightmare for the Malaysians as they trailed 0-7 before taking their first point. But the outcome was never in doubt as Boe-Mogensen sealed the second game 15-8.

The decider was a close affair until 9-9. However, the Danes pulled away to score five points in a row to hold match point.

But the Malaysians had different ideas and began their amazing fight back to take the title.

And Chong Wei made it a night to remember for Malaysia by adding the men’s singles title as well.
