Most people here believe that it was LYB's order that Chen Hong withdrew from the Malaysia open semifinal. But when LYB was asked about Chen Hong's retirement on 28th this month, LYB said that he don't want Chen Hong retired now. He praised Chen Hong very experienced great player, and urged Chen Hong play more tournaments at least this year. At the end, they agreed to play Malaysia open and Korea open to see whether Chen Hong still in peak form. Actually, it is LYB believe Chen Hong still in peak form, but Chen Hong claimed he's not good any more. Now it's clear that Chen Hong's withdraw from Malaysia open and also early defeat at Korea open could be planned by himself. He just want to find excuse for leaving China national team. LYB said Chen Hong's withdraw, indicated that he(CH) just didn't care about his career, his prize money and his ranking points. When someone(means CH) wants to plummet, It is no use how hard others try to help him.

How ironically here, most people try hard to stay in the national team, how come Chen Hong fights to leave? On the other hand, LYB always tried hard to kick players out of national team, and never tried to keep a player.

People may wonder why Chen Hong self destroys himself. Now it is clear that he was just married to a Taiwan female player, he wants to play for Taiwan as soon as possible when he's still capable to play, Which means he still believes he's in good form, but he just pretended not good, and quit the China team in order to join Taiwan. That's also the reason LYB try hard not let Chen Hong go. The reason is not that LYB likes CH or really thinks CH is the best (actually he never let CH play team events for quite a long time). The reason now is clear that he's afraid Chen Hong could be another Wang Chen, who could prevent LYB's team winning more titles.

I think it is perfect if he can really play for Taiwan. That definitely makes badminton more interesting. He is definitely one of the best players in the last 10 years. and one of the very few who can dominate for a while. Lin Dan of course has been dominating for quite long and especially strong which has never seen before in the badminton history. Chen Hong era came in late 2001 to 2003 totally dominating. Peter Gade could be the only one left who also dominated for a while. No other current players except the above three has ever dominating yet. Usually Chinese players, such as Dong Jun, Sun Jun, especially Ji XP, have very short careers because of their system. Now Chen Hong could be the only exception in men's singles.

Good luck Chen Hong, hope to see you winning at least 2 titles this year as you won 2 six star tournaments last year, which was the 2nd best among all players after Lin Dan.

Chen Hong is one hell of a player.. i prefer him more than LD.. i think that his smashes are much more powerful compared to LD.. maybe he is really trying to step down from national team... he is really a great player...

Just curious, where did you get the source when you said CH pretended he is not good and want to play for Taiwan asap. Is the source reliable? That really hurt his credibility.

The fact is that Chen Hong married a player from Taiwan. That's very reliable.

    My thought

Sina website has lots of news about Chen hong retirement if you can read Chinese. Chen Hong did give reasons of his retirement during his interview, basically he feels his chance of making the Olympic 2008 is slim and even if he qualify along with other players, he may not be chosen ... Li Yongbo told Chen Hong if he can maintain his world ranking in the top 4 then no one can stop him from participating the Olympic, Chen Hong is the one dictate his destiny, not the coaches ... Of course, Chen Hong know too well about Li Yongbo hence decided not to go that far to find out the truth.
I really pity Chen Hong, he's probably the most under-rated player in badminton world. Of course Li Yongbo doesn't want Chen Hong to retire as Chen still very capable to help China to clear lots of hurdle in Individual event, juts looked at what Chen Hong had done in World Championship 2006, he was the biggest reason why 2 Chinese players were in the Final.
Chen Hong also has expressed his "disgust" of unfair treatment in Team event which I think is the main reason of his departure. I like the way Chen Hong handling his departure, determine yet provide logical reasons. I am sure Li Yongbo would have like Chen Hong to say otherwise or not saying anything at all but enough is enough, that's how I think Chen Hong must have felt.
Chen Hong will not play for Taiwan, he stated that clearly during his interview, he wants to be responsible being a husband ...
In this era, among all Chinese MS players, I have to say Chen Hong is the one that I really admire for his sportsmanship and skill.
    All the best, Chen Hong!

With all the political issue, I really don't think going to TW will be good or easy for CH. If I have the choice, I might consider to go for the "rich minority" ones, as it generate more $$$, and less trouble (less resistance as this has no threat to the CHN team). Such choices including US, CAN and some western european nations.

Apart from the 'unfair treatment' he had experienced in the past, I wonder whether CH's failed relationship with Gao Ling has anything to do with his recent decision.

GL has been treated very well and has won many international titles, with a portion of the prize monies that goes to her for winning. Perhaps compared with GL, CH did not do as well financially and this could have contributed to his feeling of failure and his wanting to leave the national team so as not to be reminded of the unhappy past. He did say he wants to be a 'responsible husband' which indirectly infers that he wants his family to be sufficiently provided for financially.

Frankly, how many of today's players can beat CH in peak form? If CH really trains hard and enjoys a peace of mind, it will even be more difficult for the best in the world, including LD, to defeat him. Naturally LYB fears that CH will move to Taiwan, as CH has a good excuse that he wants to be home with his Taiwanese wife, and then plays for Taiwan. Then CH can appear in the Beijing Olympics without possible 'manoeuvrings' from LYB had he remained in the China Team. And with luck, he might even be the Olympic champion with Taiwan rewarding him handsomely for publicising Taiwan's name and flag in the world. Then even GL will have to give CH a second look.

With a rather sensitive relationship that has beset both China and Taiwan for more than half a century, will China be willing to let this happen?

LYB would not want Chen Hong to retire until there are more reliable back-ups for the Chinese team. Right now, in the Thomas Cup, only Chen Yu can be considered as the 4th player, and that is a bit too dicey.

many here have very good points.
IMO, the main MS players in LYB's sleeve is LD, CJ and BCL.
CH knows that too and CH dont wanna be like XZX in 2004.
I congratulate CH for taking control of his career.

Also, yes, as LOH had said, the gao ling factor may add to CH decision as well.

I would say Chen Jin is a much more reliable player than Chen Yu.

Let us look at it this way. Chen Hong is very useful to China, but what does Chen Hong get in return? If he leaves now when he is still at the top, he can at least earn some just rewards, financially and otherwise, which also ties in well with any plans for his future and a possiblility of starting a family.

We will not see the last of Chen Hong yet. From what i see, this might be the same case as Zhou Mi. However Chen Hong is making his exit from China Team gracefully without creating any controversy with LYB. All the players in China knows how LYB operates. They just keep mummm about it. No Choice.

There is one theory which goes like this. CH wanted to give a good fight in the MAS open. However LYB, trying to promote BCL, asked him to lose. This broke CH's last hope and he chose to withdraw and then lose in KOR open.

not surprised at all. As i said b4, lyb want to up bcl ranking for 08 OG preparation. Too bad, bcl has poor record against TH and PG where as CH had beaten all the current greats once before.

second that. love watching him at the 05 AE final against LD....never get bored watching him. i tend to find BCL quite boring!! but i'll root for him if he's against another country!! an exciting player is CH, hopefully for some other lucky country.
