The Li-Ning Singapore Open has been dealt a fresh blow after five Chinese shuttlers withdrew from the tournament which takes place from 19-23 June at the Singapore Indoor Stadium.

Chen Long (Men's No.3), Wang Xin (Women's No.2), Li Xuerui (Women's No.3), Wang Shixian (Women's No.4) and Wang Lin from the China national team will not be participating at the OSIM BWF World SuperSeries tournament, the Singapore Badminton Association confirmed on Friday.

No explanation was given for their withdrawals, although preparation for the London Olympics may be one reason.

The world's top two men shuttlers, Lee Chong Wei from Malaysia and Lin Dan from China, have already given the tournament a miss and the absence of the five Chinese players will further dampen the mood ahead of the annual event.

But fans can still look forward to watching Olympic badminton men's singles champion Taufik Hidayat in action. Other notable stars include Thailand's Boonsak Ponsana, Vietnam's Nguyen Tien Minh, and Indonesia's Markis Kido and Hendra Setiawan.

Meanwhile, Singapore's Women's double pair of Shinta Mulia Sari and Yao Lei will be hoping to repeat their triumph in 2010. Joining them in representing Singapore are the likes of Derek Wong, Gu Juan and Fu Mingtian.

A record-large prize purse of US$200,000 (S$253,274) is up for grabs at the tournament which will be celebrating its 25th anniversary this year.

Badminton: China's top players give Li-Ning Singapore Open a miss

    Posted: 01 June 2012 2229 hrs

SINGAPORE: Several of China's top singles players have said they will not be taking part in this year's Li-Ning Singapore Open.

The Singapore Badminton Association was notified that men's world number three Chen Long, women's world number two Wang Xin, number three Li Xuerui, number four Wang Shixian and former world champion Wang Lin would be giving the tournament a miss.

China's charge in the men's singles competition will be led by world number 10 Du Pengyu, while world number seven Jiang Yanjian is the highest-ranked Chinese in the women's singles competition.

Despite this, organisers said the competition, which will be held from June 19 to 24, will still feature 38 of the world's top ranked shuttlers from around the world, all preparing for the London Olympics in July.

"We are eagerly anticipating the start of the 25th edition of the Li-Ning Singapore Open. With about 70 Olympic-bound shuttlers coming to our shores, fans can look forward to world class badminton action at the Singapore Indoor Stadium," said Mr Ng Yoke Weng, Organising Chairman of the Li-Ning Singapore Open.

World number six Sho Sasaki and world number seven Tago Kenichi will fly the flag for Japan, while Korea's top player and world number seven Lee Hyun Il and top Indonesian shuttler Simon Santoso, the world number nine, will also be contesting the men's singles competition of the Singapore Open.

China's Jiang will meanwhile face fierce competition from Cheng Shao Chieh, the world number 10 from Taiwan, and Korean world number nine Sung Ji Hyun in the women's singles competition.

The doubles competitions will also see a high-class field of competitors.

Top Korean pair and world number two Jung Jae Sung and Lee Yong Dae will be joined by compatriots and world number four Ko Sung Hyun and Yoo Yeon Seong in the men's doubles.

The likes of Indonesia's Mohammad Ahsan and Bona Septano and Indonesian former world and Olympic champions Markis Kido and Hendra Setiawan are expected to put on a strong challenge for the title as well.

The Koreans are also well-represented in the women's doubles, with world number three pairing Ha Jung Eun and Kim Min Jung and world number six Jung Kyung Eun and Kim Ha Na confirming their participation.

But Japan will put up a stiff challenge for the title, with three pairs in the world's top 10 expecting to feature heavily in the final rounds. They are Mizuki Fujii and Reika Kakiiwa, Shizuka Matsuo and Mami Naito, and Miyuki Maeda and Satoko Suetsuna.

How about China's second stringers, who's coming? Chen Xiaojia, Han Li, Yao Xue, Qiao Bin, Chen Yuekun, Tian Houwei, etc?

Only we're complaining, the rest of the world are not, I mean the participants who have a better chance at the title.

Hope Jiang YJ ,the handmaiden of her more illustious compatriots, gets to win a Superseries title after a long while. Du PY's chances I don't rate as high in the MS.

Easy opening tie at Li-Ning Singapore Open for Fu

    my paper

    Thursday, Jun 07, 2012

Newly crowned Sportswoman of the Year, Fu Mingtian, will have the easiest opening tie among Singapore shuttlers, at the June 19 to 24 Li-Ning Singapore Open at the Singapore Indoor Stadium.

The South-East Asia Games gold medallist will begin her Li-Ning Singapore Open with a first-round tie against a qualifier, after yesterday's tournament draw.

However, Gu Juan, Singapore's Olympic-bound women's badminton player, faces a trickier opener against Porntip Buranaprasertsuk.

The Thai shuttler is ranked just a spot below the Singaporean world No.16, but has beaten Gu in three of their five previous encounters.

Singapore's Olympic-bound men's shuttler, Derek Wong, will have to battle his way through the qualifiers. Should he manage to do so, he will meet fourth-seed Simon Santoso of Indonesia.

Compatriot Ashton Chen faces an even tougher opponent, should he make it out of his qualifying draw: He will face China's top representative, Wang Zhengming.

In the women's doubles, 2010 Singapore Open champions, Shinta Mulia Sari and Yao Lei, will face a new Malaysian pairing of Vivian Hoo and Woon Khe Wei, in their opening tie.

"We want to do our best at this event, in front of our home supporters. Of course, winning in Singapore again this year would be a dream come true for us," said Yao.

Japan's Sho Sasaki, the men's singles top seed, will face Denmark's Viktor Axelsen, while women's top seed Jiang Yanjiao of China will face a qualifier

I hope Fu Mingtian will progress far here. Wish her success, and Gu Juan too. Ashton and Derek will have their work cut out for them - let's see if Derek can scalp Simon just as he did to Taufik before. May the SG crowd and home ground effect help to lift Shinta/Yao's game and spur them to repeat their previous title win.

    Local shuttlers face tough opponents

    The New Paper
    Saturday, Jun 09, 2012

To prepare themselves for the Olympics, Singapore's shuttlers will need some tough opposition.

Luckily for them, they will get it in the Li-Ning Singapore Open at the Singapore Indoor Stadium from June 19-24.

Tuesday's draw sees several mouth-watering clashes for some of Singapore's Olympic representatives on the first day of the tournament.

One of those matches will involve Derek Wong, who will be the only local men's singles player in London.

He will potentially meet world No. 9 Simon Santoso from Indonesia if he gets past the qualifying round.

In a press release, Wong said: "This tournament is crucial for me as I continue my preparations for the upcoming Olympics.

"Over the past few months, I have been training hard and also picking up some new techniques and tactics that the coaches have introduced.

"I am excited about taking to the court and see if I can implement what was practised in training."

Another London-bound player, Gu Juan, will also face a tough women's singles match against Thailand's Porntip Buranaprasertsuk.

Gu said: "The Li-Ning Singapore Open is not only a prestigious international tournament, but also a good platform for me to gauge my abilities before the Olympics."

In addition, 2010 women's doubles champions Shinta Mulia Sari and Yao Lei will face Malaysia's Vivian Hoo and Woon Khe Wei.

The pair will be hoping to improve on last year, when they were eliminated in the last 16.

Yao said: "We want to do our best at this event in front of our home supporters.

"Of course, winning in Singapore again this year would be a dream come true for us."

There will also be some exciting matches involving foreign players, such as the women's singles meeting between world No. 8 Juliane Schenk of Germany and Salakjit Ponsana of Thailand.

Badminton: S'pore shuttlers to do their best at Li-Ning Singapore Open

By Shereen Tan | Posted: 17 June 2012 2159 hrs

SINGAPORE: Singapore badminton coach Luan Ching said that his team will do their best at the Li-Ning Singapore Open on 19 June.

Singapore shuttlers Gu Juan, Fu Mingtian, Derek Wong, Yao Lei and Shinta Mulia Sari will be taking part in the competition.

Apart from Fu, this will be the last tournament for the rest before next month's London Olympics.

Coach Luan Ching said that women singles' shuttler Gu Juan has the toughest draw next week.

But added that favourites China are not guaranteed a win.

Separately, men's singles player Derek Wong hopes to improve on his record.

Wong said: "I have been in the qualifying rounds for the Singapore Open for the past few years. So now I am hoping to qualify for the main draw, probably I can go even further."

    S'pore Open will stay elite

SBA willing to meet badminton body's new minimum prize money of S$317,500

    by Dan Guen Chin

    04:45 AM Jun 18, 2012

SINGAPORE - The Republic's marquee badminton event, the Li-Ning Singapore Open, is not in immediate danger of losing its place in the Badminton World Federation (BWF) Super Series despite competition from other countries keen to join the top-tier classification.

The present 12-leg Super Series circuit will begin a new four-year cycle from 2014 and one of the existing tournaments will have to make way for a newcomer, upon a successful evaluation by the BWF.

This means there is a possibility the Singapore Open may get the chop when the current cycle expires at the end of the 2013 season.

The current series is headlined by the The All-England Open and the lucrative Korean Open, with other stops in Indonesia, China, Denmark, Japan, India, Hong Kong, France, Malaysia and Singapore.

At the BWF Annual General Meeting in Wuhan last month, the six countries which currently host a lower-tier Grand Prix Series tournament each - Thailand, Taiwan, United States, Canada, Switzerland and Germany - have made it clear that they wish to elevate their events to Super Series status come 2014.

Singapore Badminton Association (SBA) chief executive Bobby Lee attended the Wuhan meeting and told TODAY that Singapore is not taking its status in the elite of world badminton for granted.

"We have a fight on our hands," said Lee. "Since the BWF are sticking to the 12-leg series, one of us has to make way for a newcomer, if they are successful in their bid."

But Lee is confident Singapore will remain in the elite circuit, given the Republic's good organisational capabilities and track record.

"We have reasons to be confident. There is a great venue in the Singapore Indoor Stadium.

"We have the infrastructure to support the event and we draw good crowds too, reasons the BWF cannot ignore," said Lee.

And to reinforce their bid for the new cycle, the SBA are preparing to meet the new minimum prize money level of US$250,000 (S$317,500) set by the BWF to become a potential Super Series host. The current Super Series requires at least a minimum of US$200,000, which is the total offered at the Li-Ning Singapore Open starting this week.

"Exactly how much more we are prepared to increase is yet to be decided. But the SBA council is supportive of a new bid after the 2013 season," said Lee.

"There will always be a Singapore Open, irrespective of whether we have a title sponsor or not. In short, the show must go on.

"The Singapore Open is our showcase and a way of saying thanks to all our stakeholders who have contributed to the development of the game in Singapore."

The SBA are expected to make an official bid by September, after which the BWF's evaluation committee will make their final recommendations.

A BWF spokesman said that it was unlikely that the world body would increase the number of Super Series events given the congested calendar.

"The fear is that it will lead to players' fatigue by having too many events," he told TODAY.

Yes he was a one-time AE champion, then known as Luan Jin when he defeated Morten Frost in 1983,
    15-2, 13-15, 15-4.

I think I've seen him in action in Singapore.

If DPY withdrew, good for Sony. He won't meet DPY in the first round of main draw.

With TA/LN withdrew, if Frans/Shendy won 1st round, they will straight go to QF
