OK...So we have (actually the IBF) reduced this beautiful sport where fantastic power is displayed in zooming smashes, unbelievable touch is displayed in a hair pin drop, incredible agility is displayed in coming from a deep clear to pick up a shuttle falling to the ground just grazing the net, and incredible speed and stamina displayed in running from one corner to the other in a 22x20 court until one drops out of exhaustion, to... the most benign and ugliest badminton stroke of 'em all, to the SERVICE.
    Wow, what progress!

guys, let's not get so harsh on taneepak. as far as i know, he is of my uncle's age, a real badminton fan with a good deal of knowledge and an active BCer. let's show some respect to him while we disagree with him.

I would not even dream of being harsh on our very courageous friend Taneepak. I admire and highly respect Taneepak's writing skills and his desire to share them with all BCers. If anything, I was writing about the write up; nothing personal or directed towards a person.
The way I look at it, it is a debate, a discussion, and opinions about ideas, not about persons.

It's good to agree to disagree !!!

    Hi franxon,

    I totally agree with you.

This world will be a very dull place for us... if everyone is to think the same.

It's good to agree to disagree !!!

    Cheers... chris@ccc

Agreed! By all means have friendly debate, laugh at ourselves, laugh at each other and congulate yourself if yourself if you flatten your rival and be quick to congulate him if he put one by you. Life would be dull if everyone think the same. Man, it's good to be alive!

I dont care how many posts Tanpeek writes, other than the fact that I admire his stamina ... I dont agree with hardly anything he says and thats fine.

at the end of the day, the Poll still stands.

The only thing I can say about the poll is that it was conducted much earlier before trials of the new scoring system were conducted. All that was presented to the general public was the schematics of how such scoring system would work.

As with change, a lot of people will tend to disagree with the change as it comes as a shock to them and that people in general do not like change. After watching the new scoring system in action when I was in Melbourne during the Commonwealth games, my opinion of the new scoring system has changed and what I voted in the poll whereby I prefered the old scoring system, now does not represent my current opinion of it.

Hence I would say the poll is not a true and honest reflection of the current opinion of the voters. I'm sure some of them have changed camps and prefer the new scoring system.

Also, it is pretty disgusting to see many people attacking Taneepak so blatantly on the forums. Do you people have any other way to express your opinions in a more civil manner rather than 'flaming' someone who expresses his opinion in a very civil manner. Taneepak has maintained his class and dignity throughout these discussions and it is pretty sad to see that some of you people have to lower yourselves to try and hope to be able to post a reply which might 'sound' intellectual but actually isn't.

    That is all.

To the point of conducting the poll, I think it would be a good idea as it will show the most current stance of the members in the forum.

And to the second point. What nonsense is that? If you cannot take the heat, turn on the air conditioner.

No, It is not nonsense. If you post, you do not expect everybody to agree with you. If you find people disagree and challenging your post unacceptable, than don't post. As long as the post is not vulgar or offensive, it should be acceptable.

A minor change to a sport in order to attract more fans and sponsorship is a good thing, however, if you completely change the game itself, then I wonder if the cost is too big (as to lose a lot of die hard fans).

Long game requires stamina which applies for almost every single sports in the world. You don't see basketball only play for 15 minutes, if ppl just say, "I am tired". You don't see baseball cut 9 innings into 3, because it's almost impossible for a SP to get CG these days. Therefore, why badminton needs to be cut, because someone who "does not understand or love" the game issue some "not well thought" ideas?

I know with the old system, it's harder to organize a tournament or broadcast. However, we need to know, we put all the effort to make things better for the sport. Not try to twist the sport itself for other factors. A good example is, u exchange shoes to better fit ur feet, not cut ur feet, because u like the shoes.

Offcourse you don't. You just hope that everyone will be able to accept that that is your stance on the opinion without throwing a molotov cocktail in your direction. However this is not the case.

I hardly beleive all these disputs can convince anybody to change their opinions. There are adherents of the OSS and their posts help their like-minded persons to better understand why they like the OSS, but it doesn't help to reconvince the adherents of the NSS - instead, they become angry and explain why we all should be happy with the NSS, or even improve the NSS further: 5x21, 7x11, 3x25 for doubles and 3x21 for singles, etc., etc. All their arguments are very useful for their like-minded persons to better understand why they like the NSS (or the process of permanent changing the SS - I am in doubts what they like more), but again, it doesn't help to reconvince the adherents of the OSS and change their opinion.

I think, it is a normal situation, like in most of the other fields of human activities. The problem is the following: all the polls that I know showed that the OSS has much more adherents than the NSS, but the decision was taken for the NSS. This needs explanations... One of the explanation could be: it does not matter what the fans prefer, we (IBF officials) are working for the future, we are professionals, and we have to consider TV, money, sponsors, business, etc. - it is quite different, and we know better what to do - you'd better keep silence, be patient and vote 100% for our proposals. As for me, I don't like this, and I don't believe such a system can produce good results. I don't believe they understand why the NSS will help to achieve all these beautiful goals. Look: now some people say they like the NSS, but the matches became too short, they should last longer. But it was one of the main declared goals when implementing the NSS - to make the matches shorter. They explained that it is absolutely necessary to attract more sponsors, TV, spectators, ... Finally, they achived their goal, congratulations! But now many people realized it is not good, so we need to develop the SS further... Poor, poor badminton...

I've been playing the NSS for about 10 weeks now, until last night when my local league voted to reject the NSS and stay with 3x15. I played my first games of 'proper' badminton again in preparation for a match this weekend and the difference is startling. I'd forgotten how much physically harder the game was before, and that you actually had to go and win a game rather than seek to build a lead of a few points and then just edge your way to victory, almost halving the points with your opponent. I can't wait to play the OSS competitively again, although I'm going to be very tired after it!

    Pop Music Vs Classical Music

    Hi Dmitry,

When I saw that you are from Russia, an analogy came to my mind... MUSIC !!!.

    Pop Music Vs Classical Music.

The NSS is like Pop Music and the OSS is like Classical Music.

Personally, I love listening to Classical Music. And I love those relating to European music (particularly from Russia) during the latter half of the 18th and the early 19th centuries.

It's very unfortunate that most music that I hear today in public places, for example, at the shopping centres, train stations, radios, etc... are not the classical ones. There are usually pop music.

But when I get home... I just go and listen to my Classical CD collection.

As you know, Pop Music is structured to last around 2-3 minutes. But Classical ones can go on without any restriction of time. Did you know that the original Bolero by Ravel (French though, not Russian) took 17 minutes 6seonds? And I love it... and I wish it could on and on, never stopping...

What I am saying is that IBF (or BWF now) is trying to commercialise Badminton.

They are cutting short play time hoping to fit in some commercials on television in future. It's all for the media. It's all for entertainment. It's not for the traditional/classical Game of Badminton.

I have said months ago in this forum that we can play whatever scoring systems in our own games. We do not have to play the system that IBF/BWF is staging for entertainment.

We should let our professional players/entertainers/performers to decide on what scoring system is best for them, as long they can entertain us.

But, for us, as players of Badminton in our own club/private sessions, we can play whatever scoring system we choose.

WE SHOULD BE ABLE TO PLAY THE SCORING SYSTEM THAT WE LOVE BEST, IN OUR OWN SESSIONS.

We are playing for enjoyment, not for entertainment/performance.

IBF/BWF has no say on that.

    Cheers... chris@ccc

    Hi Chris,

I also love listening to Classical Music, the same period, particularly from Germany.:D I also continue to play in OSS in my club - no doubts we can do this until it is not an official tournament. But my point is that for entertainment the OSS is also much better than the NSS. All the poll results convince to this.

I think, it would be interesting to investigate why some kind of sports (in particular, sport games) are popular, and how they achieved the popularity in different countries. If you do this, you'll find that all the arguments which IBF used to justify the change of SS are useless and irrelevant. They imagine in their minds some "average spectator" and decided that he/she likes this, this, and that. But the world is more complicated and people like the other things. Simply investigate what spectators really like and you'll find that OSS was better for them. Investigate how some games became very popular in some countries within short period of time, for example basketball in Europe, tennis in Russia, football in Asia - these are the most recent examples. Thus one can learn what to do for a success, and understand that OSS to NSS transition is the way to the opposite direction! If we continue your analogy with music, I would say it is "non-popular pop music versus popular classic music".

lol, but I like pop music, something like beyonce and mariah carey

It's easier to get excited with the NSS, but is disappointed quicker than expected as well

Well after playing with the new system at all my clubs/leagues/quite a few tournaments, I've got to say I don't mind the new system so much now. I think it was mainly the shock of such a drastic change that caused me to despise of it initially. I don't like it better or worse than the old system, I honestly don't mind either way .
