Sad to see him leave like this, not on his own terms.

that's a good point. and that explain all the sadness. we have seen numerous other player leaving the circuit, including players as famous as LCW, e.g. Gade, Taufik. i don't remember ppl having such sad reaction. it was mostly like... "oh. he retired, wish him well." type of response.

but for LCW, so much sadness. and probably a bit sudden and a bit out of his control.

Somehow makes me think that fate has on several occasions already betrayed him in some important moments in his career.

Well, some things have been determined by God. People can give their very best, even to the point of sacrificing. But, only God knows the result. People plans, God decides.

Having said that, LCW's life has been filled with unfortunate things. Aside from his failure to won OG and WC gold medal, he had to face his own suspension 5 years ago and now this, his debilitating health. But, each of these, he always come back stronger. He never gives up no matter what happened to him. His spirit is really admirable. One day, he will achieve something greater than what he has dreamed for.

Mikkey Dee from Motörhead said something admirable when Lemmy died as I think often on when I am forced to say goodbye to close friendship.

"I’d rather choose to celebrate his life than to cry over his death"

It won’t be hard for me to remember LCW’s career with a huge joy and greatness! :)

I think LCW makes bigger impact that LD in badminton world. LD had never suffer defeats in Olympic or WC Final, and not like LCW heartbreak defeats. Its easy and dandy to see someone keep winning. But LCW has always bounced from that adversity. His overall number of titles is the proof so imo, his life is like mixing up everything.. hardwork, consistency, brilliance, disappointments, succesion of near misses and then the way he retires. so its more meaningful and remembered

Um.. I don't think anyone can make bigger impact than LD in winning 2 Olympic Golds, 5 WC golds and so on. Winning multiple finals > Losing multiple finals. Especially in Major events.
LD is the last one standing of all Legends too.

LD is LD. LCW is LCW.

Perhaps winning OG and WC but LCW career is more inspiring to other players/ to kids growing up. what is life without disappointment.

Yes LD is LD. but have you see LCW in 2006 MO final vs LD, that epic comeback, he was skinny and scrawl. in no way his smash is zippier than his final career match against momota. He doesnt look like he is going to be a top player, people might even think that win is luck but wow his transformation all while LD has always been LD.

not many players or kids are born with LD magnificent physique (2008OG Final is an exhibition of that) but many people kids are born with skinny or scrawl posture of LCW having that dreams that is almost impossible to achieve.

I don't think so. You only see whatever you want to see. How could you miss LD's many transformations throughout his long careers too? Winning OGs, WCs, or even AGs and AEs both you so highly regard are not inspiring?

You think LD had no disappointment ever? Hasn't he had lost many times too before he overcome his own issues? He has made a lot more epic comeback or rebound. Winning two OGs after losing in R1 Olympics despite being one of the favorites? What's that not to inspire any other players or even LCW himself?

LD is on his way to fulfill his dream while LCW in tears had to call it quit. Not to be disrespectful, but had LCW taken care of his own health and body better and more delicately in his past couple of years, he might have still been on his way (even much more certain chance than LD) to be the first male single player to play in five olympics.

Both are full inspiration to others though probably in their own different way.

Do you know something we don‘t, saying LCW has himself to blame that he got nose cancer?

I only know that if you overworked your body for a long period of time, it will get much weaker and open up more possibilities to all sort of illness. The way he had been going on, he had probably ignored all sorts of symptoms and just went on like it was nothing worth checking nor slowing down a bit.
In the interview, he mentioned something like how his wife was so scared (before he decided to retire) he wouldn't stop because he was too stubborn the last time and didn't pay much attention to his own health.

For one thing, LCW himself was shedding tears towards the end of his announcement. He really wanted to make it to OG 2020 so his sons can watch him play live.

What is Cantonese cancer? 5 facts about nasopharyngeal carcinoma

scientific discovery that could pave the way for the early detection of what it describes as Cantonese cancer - the most common head and neck cancer in Singapore.

Here are five things to know about the disease.

WHAT IS IT?

Nasopharyngeal carcinoma or nose cancer, is often referred to as Cantonese cancer because of its prevalence among the Chinese, particularly those from the Cantonese dialect group.

It affects the nasopharynx, which is the area behind the nose and above the back of the throat. The cells that line the nasopharynx can become cancerous and give rise to the condition, also referred to as NPC, according to the SingHealth website.

Science as well as Nature Genetics are two examples of research journals that refer to the disease as Cantonese cancer.

WHO ARE MOST AT RISK?

The exact causes of NPC "are not yet known", according to the Gleneagles Hospital website, although there are risk factors that increase one's chances of developing it.

These include smoking and infection by the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV). EBV is associated with NPC development as the virus been found in nearly all NPC cells.

"However, an EBV infection on its own is not enough to cause NPC," the website stated.

Besides being more common among Cantonese people, NPC also affects more men than women.

According to SingHealth, it is the eighth most common cancer among Singaporean men and affects those between the ages of 35 and 55. It is also the most common head and neck cancer in Singapore.

On its website, the Gleneagles Hospital also suggested that NPC is linked to certain dietary habits.
The disease is "very common in areas of Asia, northern Africa and the Arctic region, which are known for diets that are high in salt, cured fish and meat", it stated.

EARLY DETECTION
To lower one's risk, SingHealth recommended a diet of fresh fruit, green vegetables and other sources of vitamin C. It also warned against consuming excessive amounts of salted fish and other preserved foods, as well as "active and secondary" exposure to tobacco smoke.

On Monday, a study by Singapore scientists was published noting the discovery of two EPV variants. Individuals infected by the unique strain of EBV carrying these two variants were found to have 11 times higher risk of developing NPC than non-carriers.

"This unique strain seems to have originated in Asia, followed by expansion in NPC-endemic regions," said GIS said in a press release.

Lead author of the study, Dr Liu Jian Jun, said the study provided "novel insights into the NPC endemic" and "potentially provides the basis for implementing effective intervention programmes to reduce its incidences".

Executive director at GIS, Professor Ng Huck Hui also said that the discovery has "important implications for public health efforts to reduce the burden of NPC, particularly among Cantonese speakers".

"Testing for these variants enables the identification of high-risk individuals for routine clinical monitoring to detect NPC early.

Primary prevention through the development of vaccines against high-NPC-risk EBV strains is expected to greatly reduce the incidence rate of Cantonese Cancer," Prof Ng added.

TREATMENT
Early nasopharyngeal cancer is treated by radiotherapy, while chemotherapy is sometimes used as part of the treatment.

"Due to the location of the cancer, surgery is not commonly used," SingHealth stated on its website, adding that "in some patients, surgery may be used to remove lumps in the neck that have persisted or returned after treatment with radiotherapy".

Surgery may also be considered when the cancer in the nasopharynx recurs despite radiotherapy and there is no spread of cancer elsewhere in the body.

"With prompt and appropriate treatment, the outlook for a person with nasopharyngeal cancer is reasonable. Early disease limited to (the) nasopharyngeal (area) can be cured with radiation in large majority," said SingHealth.
