Edit: I also minimized salt, sugar and carbohydrates in my diet.

TLDR: Astaxanthin is a natural supplement that helps minimize inflammation, reducing joint pain, improving blood flow, eye health, and a myriad of other benefits.

I had knee problems and extreme pain since I started playing badminton. I could not bend my knees more than 90 degrees. Anymore and I would fall over in pain. These problems were from many years of tennis on hard courts and running on concrete. I needed surgery in both knees.

When playing badminton, I always wore hinged knee braces (usually flexible metal inserts) on both legs. Over the years, I spent thousands of dollars on knees braces. When my knees were really bad, I had to wear full metal, double-hinged braces or I would not be able to play.

About 11 months ago, I discovered ASTAXANTHIN and now have nearly zero knee pain; I have been playing 6 months without using any knee braces and can do unassisted pistol squats! I'm still having a hard time believing what has happened but I'm...so happy! :D

Additional benefits I have found from taking astaxanthin:
    1) I recover faster from soreness after exercising
    2) I have absolutely no joint or muscle pain. I have not felt this good since I was 21.
    3) Endurance has increased
    4) Eye sight has improved, I see things with better contrast and edges are more defined, sharper

It's not just me, I have recommended astaxanthin to 5 other people and they have had significant improvements as well (from moderate to major reduction in pain). They tried astaxanthin because they saw me without my knee braces and my significantly improved movement.

Anyway, it's relatively inexpensive and a natural supplement. There are minimal potential side effects, it's just good for overall health as you'll see.

Dosage: if you are cautious/conservative, start with 4mg a day. If you have faith or just want max results, start with 12mg a day. I did this, 12mg with lunch and had zero problems. Costco sells the Nutrex brand in 12mg and it is one of the best. Not all astaxanthin is created the same. There can be a great difference in price; if so, it's usually the dosage: 4mg, 8mg, 12mg, and the number of tablets. Now that I am "healed", I do 8mg a day, 4mg with lunch and 4mg with dinner.

I hope this helps. It's been a life changer for me!

Have you already tried turmeric or glucosamine/chondroitin?

Yep, they are not even close IMHO. I tried the most potent, glucosamine/chondroitin/MSM combo; many different brands, they just "helped" with the reduction of pain and possibly swelling. Astaxanthin has HEALED my joint problems. At least as well as can be, this side of surgery.

I don't have any joint pain, do not need knee braces and can do pistol squats, there's not much more I can ask for. :)

Hmmm. I knew nothing about this before. Another anti-oxidant miracle drug?
Glad to hear that it's working for you, Dink!

Apparently, astaxanthin is put in the feed for fish-farmed salmon to give their flesh that nice "salmon" colour.
Those must be the least arthritic fish in the world.

I was sooo close to blindly hit the "report" button.... but then I noticed who's the OP. :)

Very interesting, never heard of it either. Luckily, I don't have any serious issues with my joints (yet...), but my wife has problems with her knees for years. It has improved noticeably since she started doing Yoga, but still she can't flex it fully without feeling pain. Will definitely do some more researches here.

    Here
Interesting. I've had knee pain for a few years. It used to cripple me to the point of considering surgery. I've tried Glucosamine/Chondroitin/MSM and Fish/Krill Oil and resting for a few months (resting is very hard to do as you all know) but they didn't help at all. As soon as I exercise, the pain is back. A few months ago, I've managed to lower the pain significantly by icing the knee a few times a week. I'd say currently the pain is down by 75% but it's not gone completely. It still limits me slightly on the court and when I'm going up the stairs but I was very happy with that.

Considering who the OP is, I will try this. I'll report my findings here. Question though:

    1. Did you feel any negative side effect at all?
    2. How long did it take until you felt much better?

It's not a miracle "drug". It's naturally ocurring carotenoid, similar to beta-carotene. It's used as a supplement. It won't just help with joints and eye health, I think its greatest attribute is reducing overall inflammation throughout the body. As a result, indirectly, it helps heal your entire body.

I use Nutrex Hawaii BioAstin Astaxanthin from Costco. Please note, this is for 120 tablets, 12mg, a 3 month supply. Costco's in SoCal only have this one selection. You can get 4mg, 120 tablets from Amazon. Links here:

    https://www.costco.com/BioAstin-Hawaiian-Astaxanthin-12-mg.,-120-Gel-Caps.product.100096538.html
    https://www.amazon.com/BioAstin-Haw...4&keywords=BioAstin+Hawaiian+Astaxanthin&th=1

I have not tried other brands but did some research and the following are on par or maybe superior to BioAstin:

    In no particular order:
    1) Sports Research Astaxanthin
    2) Dr. Mercola Astaxanthin
    3) Algalife Icelandic Astaxanthin

There are many other quality brands. I went with BioAstin because it was readily available at Costco, and the very favorable reviews.

Here's more information I forgot to include in the first post:

    1) Side effects: No negative side effects that I know of but plenty of positive minor side effects.

    2) Timeline on improvement:

    a) I didn't notice any improvement for about 2 weeks.

    b) Week 3: I noticed my knees didn't hurt when I put pressure on my patella. Prior, moderate pressing down on just about any part of my patella, especially the sides, would result in significant pain.

    c) Week 5: I noticed my knees were less swollen. I had so much scar tissue, fluid and damage to both knees, they were both swollen/inflamed all the time.

    d) Week 6: I noticed improvement in the range of motion but still didn't think it was a big deal until I tried to flex my knees by doing a squat. To my surprise, no pain.

    e) Week 8: My knees felt significantly better and I tried to do a complete squat, that is, squat all the way down. I did so without any pain. This is the first time in 15 years I could perform a squat without any pain. I was in disbelief.

    f) Week 10: I tried to play badminton without any of my knee braces, I went really easy because I was scared I would bend and not be able to get back up again. After 3 hours, no pain. However, my knees did swell a bit, they were a bit tender. The next two weeks I continued to wear my knee braces just to be safe.

    g) Week:12-20:Started doing leg exercises to strengthen everything

    h) Week 20: the last time I wore knee braces. Also have not had pain nor significant swelling. All the fluid in my knees somehow drained.

So, I would say about a month to feel better, 2-3 months to feel significantly better, 5 months to be 99.9% confident this is good stuff and would recommend to others.

    Best Regards

I can hardly believe it myself, but I've just ordered a package of drugs that have been recommended through the internet by someone I don't know in person. So Dink, if you want to know your credibility level, I don't think you can get a better indication. :)

BTW, I ordered that Hawaiian BioAstin stuff from Amazon. 120 capsules with 4 mg Astaxanthin for around 26 EUR. Not cheap, but if it will help my wife to feel more comfortable being on her knees again, it will definitely be worth it. And no, I do not want to rephrase that last sentence.

Before rushing into this please be aware of (from https://selfhacked.com/blog/astaxanthin/):

"Currently, there is no direct evidence demonstrating the harm of using astaxanthin in humans or animals.

"While there is no large-scale study to demonstrate long term safety or harmful effects of astaxanthin in humans, several such studies have demonstrated conclusively that long term supplementation of similar antioxidants including carotenoids and lutein increases the risks of cancer, especially among smokers."

Thanks for the link, it actually lists 16 benefits of astaxanthin. The article actually says, "5) Astaxanthin Inhibits Cancer". As for the statement below, it's inconclusive and conflicting. Maybe the smoking is the cause of the cancer?

"While there is no large-scale study to demonstrate long term safety or harmful effects of astaxanthin in humans, several such studies have demonstrated conclusively that long term supplementation of similar antioxidants including carotenoids and lutein increases the risks of cancer, especially among smokers."

    -----------------------------------------

Here's an article published by the National Center for Biotechnology Information. It has 138 references supporting astaxanthin as having anti-cancer effects.

Multiple Mechanisms of Anti-Cancer Effects Exerted by Astaxanthin
    Li Zhang and Handong Wang

    https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4515619/

The concluding remarks state, "A growing number of studies show that ATX (astaxanthin) emerges as a key player in cancer therapy."

    -----------------------------------------

Anyway, all of my joint pain is gone and my knees don't hurt. I had a physical exam a few months ago and my doctor says I am healthy so I'm happy. :)

I forgot to mention, in addition to taking astaxanthin, I minimized salt, sugar and carbohydrates in my diet.

Less sugar, salt and carbohydrates, huh?
This is turning more and more into a serious wife-improvement thread.
