It's hard to believe that people want to post so many scathing remarks about a situation when they haven't bothered to learn the facts. (1) There are good reasons to use a "friendship" tournament to help further the sport all people are supposed to enjoy. If badminton in the US is ever to improve as a national sport there needs to be some recognition of athletes trying their best from different parts of the country (just look at the geographical makeup of the team, duh), some support given to try to increase the numbers of women playing, and some exposure to international play for a broader range of players than the "same old same old" from California. All of the women on the team are young, from all over the country, and their exposure can filter out well into the future and to everyone they come into contact with. (2) The fact that the State Department funded the trip means that they set the goals for the makeup of the team in consultation with the USOC and USAB. None of the funds were from USAB. (3) When trying to navigate a trip in Iran as a US team, obvious risks are involved and there are currently no experienced US women aside from coaches who could take on the task of management and coordination and at the same time represent the National Governing Body. If there are good women out there who'd like to dedicate their careers in the governing of USAB that would be terrific, but for now we go with what we have. (4) The trip was a diplomatic effort which was always going to be tenuous, and the exposure in advance which competitive trials would entail would undercut the chances of successfully entering the tournament, which in any case is only level 4 and hardly attracts the kind of high cachet that say, the Taiwan or British Open might. All I can say to the whiners and paranoid conspiracy freaks out there is "get real and get into your sport, not your ego."

Why send people to a tournament to lose? If we are to gain any recognition shouldnt we send players who would have a chance to win? I believe Pohl is from east coast and she does have a world ranking, why wasnt she invited? (Duh)

So we're given another instance of not checking things out before spouting off. Shannon Pohl is from the Midwest, not East Coast. (Anyway, everyone knows you can buy rankings if you sign up for enough tournaments--though this isn't to deny anyone respect for being determined and keen on the game.) The commenter has missed entirely the focus on the long-term growth of the sport and the reality that the people funding the effort had an important agenda of their own which is a far more serious matter than boasting that the US can win games at a particular event.

Many of those who posted here are from Malaysia. Can't blame them for not interested in US badminton politics.

Cant touch politics, threads have been closed before when the discussion escalated. So, now mostly just discuss the results, players, coaches.

good progress Variella, won in WS & WD :)
(don't know if she played in XD too)

She has good potential, tall and attacking play but less accuracy.
Many time called as Pelatnas nominee but failed because of less achievements in some tournaments.

..that's main reason, as cooler mentioned..Although, there's also another thread in the General Forum sub-forum/section which discusses abt this as well..

Interesting, she's an ex-Djarum player too....while Hafid Yusuf is also an ex-Djarum coach.
