    agree!

there used to be the World Grand Prix Finals. while the name isn't as flashy and grand sounding as "World Cup", it is much more descriptive and appropriate and won't be mistaken with the WC.

I was wondering of 2 things-one, is the title of the event 'Invitational World Cup 2005' ...and not 'World Cup 2005'.....so if the event is held in 2006,it will be called 'Invitational World Cup 2006' .Atleast this will create lesser confusion.

Secondly,I was also wondering that if the number of entries are to be considered then it is similar to those in which the China Masters was to be initially held[or rumoured to be held].....i.e with 16 MS,12 WS etc Players.
Of course later on the China Masters was like a normal event with a 64-Player draw in each of MS,WS etc since hardly any international players turned up.
Could it be that the fact that the China Masters was reduced to almost a national event prompted China to have another top 'Masters' event and this paved the way to the WCup....or was this in mind before??

I read from newspaper today world cup will be the first to introduce 21 points system and then all international tournaments will adopt next year. I also heard the new scoring system will award point to every winning shot. Anyone knows if this is confirmed or simply a rumor ?

There was a World Cup held anually from 1981 to 1997 (at least).
    http://www.worldbadminton.net/Portal/intbadfed/cup.html

There was also a World Grand Prix Finals held annually from 1983 to 1999 (at least).
    http://www.worldbadminton.net/Portal/intbadfed/prix.html

While I can understand the format and title of the World Championship (get players from all over the world in one huge meet, hence limit the players from same country), and the World Grand Prix Finals (players who score the most points from the Grand Prix events - strictly speaking this should not include Olympics, WC, team events etc., but I think it just uses the year-end ranking, so it includes all ranking events - during the year get to meet again in one grand final), but reason for the World Cup (not just World Cup, but the World Cup Invitational) escapes me. I won't complain though, I anticipate it, but it should be fair. Just wait and see when the time comes.

Badminton's not the only sport with this confusing naming nomenclature. In alpine skiing, the circuit is called the "World Cup" (i.e. x number of races a season akin to open tournaments in badminton). Every 3 years (I think), they have a "World Championship". The only thing they don't have is an "Invitational World _____" (fill in the blank). You get the picture. Skiing has done well so I don't think how the events/circuit are named matters in this case.

New scoring system to debut at Badminton World Cup 2005

    Author: Xinhuanet

    Thursday 27 October 2005

The International Badminton Federation (IBF) will apply the new scoring system in the Badminton World Cup 2005 to be held in December at Yiyang, central China's Hunan Province.

The new scoring system will come into effect in the World Cup, to be held from December 15-18, and will be applied to all the other international events starting from next year, China's State General Administration of Sport said at a press conference here on Wednesday.

"The new rules will make matches faster and would also cut the duration of tournaments," said Liu Fengyan, director of the administration's Table Tennis & Badminton Administrative Center.

Under the new system, each rally will be awarded a point, while the current system awards one point only to the serving player who wins a rally.

The new rules also adopts a format of best-of-three games and a21-point system for all the events. Currently, a winner is decided after 15 points for men's singles, men's and women's doubles and mixed doubles with 11 points for women's singles.

"According to the IBF statistics, the new rules will shorten the duraton of the games by one third of time," said Liu.

The World Cup, with a total prizemoney of 250,000 US dollars on offer this year, will feature players ranked among the top 16 for men's singles, top 12 for women's singles, top eight for men's doubles and top six for both women's doubles and mixed doubles.

    ------------------------------------------------------------------
even though i am for rally point scoring[unlike most of them],for the matches to redue one-third of a length is too much i think.
Anyway it's going to be tried in the WCup so we will know all the pros and cons soon enough.

21 points is fine, but I think it should be best of 5 rather than 3. Just look at Table Tennis, it is 21 points in best of 7, already it is so fast before we can really enjoy the game.

Table tennis is 11 pts best of 7...
