i have the same problem. i am 5.11, 180 pound. i play 2x a week, 6 hours and play some basketball. Both knee hurt like hell after play. My friend recommend me to take some supplement called "Move Free" basicall it is Glucosamine and Chondroitin supplement. i have been taking it one pill (Glucosamine (1500mg) and Chondroitin (1200mg).) a day.

it really helps and speed up the healing process. with out the supplement my knee will hurt for 1 weeks..now..it took 1-2 day ..

I used to suffer from a sore wrist and last year also had a bad right knee. The doc suggested I take glucosamine too which I do (don't really know how good they are yet).

The best thing so far has been a brace, one that wraps the whole knee except the patella. I've also tried to flow around the court a lot more rather than thrashing around and landing heavily and repeatedly on my right knee.

Good shoes with proper shock absorption help too. I'm using some Yonex shoes at the moment and they have made a difference.

I solved my sore wrist by strapping it heavily during play and refining my smash so it didn't place as much stress on my wrist...the advice from you guys helped.

I'll keep taking the glucosamine - I didn't need my brace the last time I played but I made a point not to over commit on my right knee too.

Before i knew about glucosamine, i periodically make pork feet stew to eat. I think getting glucosamine, gelatin, etc from natural sources are still more effective than from pills because i believe natural sources have other ingredients that the supplement pills don't. Also, the stew tastes better too :) It just take long time to cook but if one plan it out it shouldn't be much trouble.

That would be great if your stew and glucosamine sulfate are of the same stuff. Knee cartilage may be gelatin-like, but what the cartilage needs are nutrients in absorbable form, for old and creaky knees. Glucosamine, especially injections, are nutrients for the regeneration of cartilage.

There is a new range of 1 a day vitamins in the UK (well I've never seen them before) with Glucosamine and Chondroitin. Packaging says specifically for joints and backs.

    Nice FAQ on glucosamine

    http://www.healthyjoints.com.sg/FAQs.htm

I am planning on getting some glucosamine. I wonder whether brands make big difference, i can see here "Nature's way", "kordel" , "ocean pacific", "nutrilife", quite some difference in pricing.

After searching internet for very long, i still do not know what natural food sources have glucosamine

That was the thing that got me as well, I went to a large high street chemists and there were about 6-7 different kinds ranging from £10 - £25, from the shops own make to the brand name vitamin suppliers.

I settled on the Seven Seas but at £17 for 30 capsules it's quite pricey!

    Hi...

I don't take glucosamine ... however i can tell you what is giving you the pain relief. It's the sulphur component. I take Methyl-sulfonyl-methane. It helps with muscle soreness, detoxification, food absorption etc! I never really get sore from doing anything. I can play squash and badminton for a total of 6 hours in one day and im fine for the next day! The good thing is that methyl-suflonyl-methane comes from vegetables and it's all natural. I also drink aloe vera juice. I started taking that stuff mainly for my skin, but it has a lot of other added benefits.....

I suggest people that have chronic pain or feel low in energy try it.

    knee trouble

Yes I had same problem. I am also 27, 6', 73kg and play 3hrsx3times a week. I played a lot of cricket, particularly fast bowling which weakened by knees a bit. I have tried that supplement for a month (very hard to swallow), but found it did not help me. I don't get pain, but rather a burning feeling in the knees once I go home after play. Maybe also get a bit stiff in the legs too, but can bounce back in a couple of days time.

I found to put up with it, and also if my calf muscles are strong it takes pressure off the knees a bit.

I would like to bring up this topic up again. Eapak, how much is the glucosamine injection on a per shot per basis? Was the glucosamine mixed with hyaluronic acid?

It was along time ago, sometime around 1987. The surgeon charged me about HK$5,000 to HK$6,000, but this included xrays on my knees, treatment on some special machines, and a series of about a week of glucoseamine injections. I don't think one shot will do. I remember the needle was quite massive, painful and slow because the stuff has to get in between the space in the knees where the cartilage was worn out. At first I did not know what the hell he was injecting me with and suspected steriod because of its quite amazing positive effect on my knee. I then checked with a doctor friend of mine and showed her what the surgeon was injecting me with. At that time glucoseamine was never heard of let alone used in injecting into knee cartilage. She assured me it was not steroid but a nutrient for my knee cartilage. I cannot recall if the glucoseamine injections I had included hyaluronic acid. You can buy glucoseamine in capsule form or in injection liquid form in Hong Kong quite easily. But leave the injection to a medical specialist.
I think the Europeans, also the Italians, are into glucoseamine for ages. The Americans, starting with the orth. surgeons, began trying out glucoseamine sometime around 7-8 years ago.
