Report: Malaysian soccer events threatened by alleged match-fixing

    http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2008/soccer/04/26/malaysian.betting.ap/index.html

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia (AP) -- Malaysian soccer authorities may scrap or postpone upcoming international and domestic tournaments because of alleged match-fixing by local players, a news report said Saturday.

Anti-corruption officials have questioned players from the Sarawak state team in recent days about claims that they rigged matches in this season's Malaysian Super League.

There are also concerns that several other teams could also be implicated in corruption.

Khairy Jamaluddin, deputy president of the Football Association of Malaysia, has warned officials may cancel the Inter-Continental Cup Under-23 that Malaysia plans to host next month and postpone the Malaysia Cup domestic competition that kicks off in June, The Star daily reported.

"The nation's image will be tarnished if any of the national players are hauled up by the authorities during this international tournament,'' he was quoted as saying.

The Inter-Continental Cup is scheduled to feature Malaysia, Argentina, Australia, Croatia, Ghana, Iraq, Ireland and Nigeria.

Khairy said the Football Association has set up a task force to help police and the Anti-Corruption Agency investigate the alleged match-fixing, The Star reported. He said officials "are declaring all-out war against corruption in football even if it means having to overhaul our entire system.''

Representatives for the Football Association could not immediately be reached for comment Saturday.

The match-fixing allegations mark one of the most high-profile scandals to hit Malaysian soccer since 1994, when 126 players were questioned for alleged match-rigging. More than 50 were eventually banned from playing for several years.

The New Straits Times newspaper said in an editorial Saturday the investigations are "testimony to the fact that the lords of the underworld still have an insidious influence on the game,'' highlighting the "ugly underbelly of football.''

The editorial said the scale of the investigations suggest match-fixing attempts are widespread and not limited to isolated incidents.

    Main kasar eh..??
Let me framed the overall picture or the recent situation first.

Man u will hand over the EPl title to Chelsea if they had one more lost.Lets see what Wigan and West Ham can do..?N tell u what.U then have to win the last 2 games.U are in a must-win situation.

But if things get well for both man u and chelsea.
Then Chelsea - Try to score more than 6 goals in 2 games. While expecting our Ronaldo,Rooney and Tevez are incredibly off-form.

Then,by a quirk of fate. Please have that EPL title,Chelsea. My pleasure.

    My dear,

It is about time you see a bigger picture and not be hoodwinked by politicians.

Are you saying that in the whole of Malaysia we dont have anyone who know how to administer the game other than Khairy??
We have allowed these crooked politicians bled our sports dry and things are looking beyond pathetic by the day.

Agreed that the last 4 minutes penalty goal is something dissapointing.
But blaming the ref doesnt look good.Even if we are saying the truth.
Our evra, neville,o'shea and scholes are arguing with their officers.
    N u know what,we are under investigations.

Cool down. This is man u.We are talking about The Best Team In The World.
