Eriksen to go for another Olympics despite irregular heartbeat problem
    MALAYSIAN OPEN SUPER SERIES
IT’S not easy being the oldest badminton pair among the world’s elite – it takes a stout heart.
For Jens Eriksen-Martin Lundgaard Hansen of Denmark, who total 71 years of age between them, it’s no problem. The duo literally have their hearts set on badminton.
Just last year, the 37-year-old Eriksen was diagnosed with irregular heartbeat. But he got the go-ahead from his doctor and his family and agreed to stay the course until next year’s Olympic Games in Beijing.
And that is great news for the 34-year-old Lundgaard Hansen.
“Jens’ problem sometimes affects his game. He had to slow down several times. But after much discussions, he has agreed to stay on,” said Lundgaard Hansen. “If he did not, I would have had to find a new partner. I guess both our hearts are in badminton. We know that we can still maintain a high level of game for another year,” he said.
Now, that their future as a pair is confirmed, Lundgaard Hansen said that they set out to achieve one big dream this year – to win the world title for the first time.
“We have competed many times but our best was winning a bronze last year,” he said.
The Dane said they would be out to maintain their position in the top five throughout the year.
“We are currently ranked second in the world. We plan to win as many Super Series titles as possible this year. Next year, it will be our last Olympics.”
Last year, the duo went on an unbeaten streak for the first half of the year. They won the prestigious All-England title for the second time. They also emerged as champions in the China Masters and also the European Championships. Denmark also won the team title in the European Championships.
On the emergence of another pair – Simon Mollyhus and Anders Kristiansen – Lundgaard Hansen said: “This pair have been sparring with us for the last six months. They have improved. It is good for Danish badminton.”
Mollyhus-Kristiansen defeated veterans Choong Tan Fook-Lee Wan Wah in the opening round and went down fighting against Asian Games gold medallists Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong.
For the ongoing Malaysian Open, Lundgaard Hansen-Eriksen did not come with high expectations.
“Prior to the world meet last year, I was down for 12 weeks with a knee injury. Now, I am hampered by calf pain. But we hope to perform better later,” said Lundgaard Hansen.
Yesterday, the Danes went down 21-17, 16-21, 28-30 to Indonesians Markis Kido-Hendra Setiawan in the quarter-finals.
