Hmmm, this rule doesn't necessarily exclusive to the Top Committed Players. But, I do agree that protected ranking for lower ranked player is kinda useless, since they are not expected to play at high tier tournament.

TheDanishAngel is right. It only applies to Top Committed Players. That's why there is no reference to protected ranking in the statutes related to the world ranking, only in the Player Commitment Regulations.

You'll notice that there is a give and take. The players get a protected ranking and still qualify for Super 1000s, etc. but in return, they are required to play all Super 1000s and Super 750s as soon as they return.

The BWF world ranking this week for the top 4 WS

    TTY - 92625
    AY - 92130
    NO - 88836
    CYF - 88565

In this Japan Open, both TTY and AY have no point from the previous Japan Open. Both NO and CYF have to defend their points and impossible to overtake AY in this week. AY can become the new queen next month if she can progress further than TTY, provided that AY reaches at least SF.

fyi.. 116,000 points is the maximum points you can achieve.

if zsw/hyq had won the wtf finals last year they would have 116,000 points. it would have been 12,000 points instead of 'only' 11,902 for sudirman cup.

order of dominance for the past 52 weeks:
    1. zsw/hyq: 115,902... 18,240 over wyl/hdp
    2. momota: 108,318... 19,057 over syq
    3. minions: 102,153... 13,883 over li/liu

With FukuHiro's loss, their points will be reduce to 92052. This is enough to be stripped of their position. MatsuNaga will bounce back to WR1. Their previous Japan Open result is QF and they are in QF right now. It means that their points will not get reduced.

TakaMatsu can even rise back to WR2, depending on their results in Japan Open. Their lowest points are 6050.

    SF = 90022 - 6050 + 7700 = 91672 (can't overtake FukuHiro)
    F = 90022 - 6050 + 9350 = 93322 (can overtake FukuHiro)

I hate to be a pedanker but if you were to earn 116,000 points by May, then you participate in a team event and beat a player or pair with 90,000 points, you will get 12,500 points that can replace one of those Super 750s. If you are a singles or level doubles player, you could then do the same thing in a subsequent May and end up with 117,650 points. There is likely a mathematical limit to this but I can't be bothered to look it up because the probability of a player or pair being that consistent for even two or three years is so low. However, I think your calculation is flawed. If Zheng/Huang had won in Guangzhou, the 11,902 points would have stood and the 12,000 would have replaced one of the Super 750s so they would have had 116,902 points, which is a little above the maximum you stated.

AY will become WR1 after Japan Open is concluded. She progresses to SF while TTY fails to do so. Congrats, AY!

i only did a quick calc based on counting the highest possible points from 10 tournaments in the prior 52 weeks... week 31 of 2018, thru week 29 of 2019.

    og/wc = 13000
    all 3 wt1000's @ 12,000 ea = 36,000
    wtf finals @ 12,000 = 12,000
    4 x wt750's @ 11,000 ea = 44,000
    sudirman cup = 11,902

    total = 116,902

now that i see it written out i see you are correct.

my ?'n now is: is it possible to get more points from a team event than the 11,902 they got for sudirman cup? i'm not 100% clear on how team points are earned. if it's the avg. of your best previous 10 results it is still less than 11,902 for zsw/hyq.

The BWF does take 10% of the current points, which for Zheng/Huang was 111,400, and then adds 1% of the ranking points of the highest ranked pair they beat, who was the Thais with 76,190. They would have got slightly more if they had had to play, and beat, the Japanese pair. If they entered a mixed event today, they would get even more but they won't have another until after the Olympics.

Here is the points projection after WC. Notice that SYQ, VA, SWH's points don't change because of their absence in WC.

    upload_2019-8-11_9-40-55.png

KM, CTC and SYQ will retain their position no matter how they perform in WC. For the fourth rank, there are 4 peoples that can potentially occupy that spot. Here are the scenarios how they can occupy the fourth rank after WC.
    • Jonatan Christie
      • Becomes champion
      • Becomes runner up and CL doesn't win the WC
      • Reaches SF and CL doesn't reach Final
      • Reaches QF, CL doesn't reach SF and neither ASG nor AA become champion
    • Chen Long
      • Becomes champion
      • Becomes runner up and JC doesn't reach Final
      • Reaches SF, JC doesn't reach SF and AA doesn't win the WC
      • Reaches QF, JC doesn't reach QF, AA doesn't reach Final and ASG doesn't win the WC
    • Anthony Sinisuka Ginting
      • Becomes champion and both JC and CL don't reach SF
    • Anders Antonsen
      • Becomes champion, JC doesn't reach SF and CL doesn't reach Final
      • Becomes runner up, JC doesn't reach QF and CL doesn't reach SF
Additionally, ASG, AA and KS can surpass VA and SWH, if they reach certain results in WC.

ASG and AA : reach at least QF to surpass SWH, reach at least QF to surpass VA
KS : becomes runner up to surpass SWH, becomes champion to surpass VA

AY, TTY, CYF and NO will retain inside the top 4 no matter how they perform in WC. However, their position within the top 4 may change. In fact, all of them can potentially become the WR1. Here are the scenarios.
    • Akane Yamaguchi
      • Becomes champion
      • Becomes runner up and TTY doesn't win the WC
      • Reaches SF, TTY doesn't reach Final and CYF doesn't win the WC
      • Reaches QF, TTY doesn't reach SF, CYF doesn't reach Final and NO doesn't win the WC
    • Tai Tzu Ying
      • Becomes champion
      • Becomes runner up, AY doesn't reach Final and CYF doesn't win the WC
      • Reaches SF, AY doesn't reach SF and CYF doesn't win the WC
    • Chen Yu Fei
      • Becomes champion and AY don't reach Final
      • Becomes runner up and both AY and TTY don't reach SF
    • Nozomi Okuhara
      • Becomes champion, both AY and TTY don't reach SF and CYF doesn't reach Final
For the fifth rank, there are 3 players that can potentially occupy that spot. Here are the scenarios.
    • Pusarla Venkata Sindhu
      • Becomes champion
      • Becomes runner up and RI doesn't win the WC
      • Reaches SF and RI doesn't reach Final
      • Reaches QF, RI doesn't reach SF and HBJ doesn't win the WC
    • Ratchanok Intanon
      • Becomes champion
      • Becomes runner up and PVS doesn't reach Final
      • Reaches SF and PVS doesn't reach SF
      • Reaches QF, PVS doesn't reach QF and HBJ doesn't win the WC
    • He Bing Jiao
      • Becomes champion and both PVS and RI don't reach SF
Meanwhile, SN can only overtake HBJ's rank, provided that she reaches at least SF and also depends on HBJ's result in WC.

UPDATED! AY has been taken down. Who will stay on top after WC? Here is the updated scenario.

      • TTY doesn't reach SF, CYF doesn't reach Final and NO doesn't win the WC
    • Tai Tzu Ying
      • Becomes champion
      • Becomes runner up (CYF's points by winning the WC is higher, but since she is on the same half as TTY, it won't happen)
      • Reaches SF and CYF doesn't win the WC
    • Chen Yu Fei
      • Becomes champion
      • Becomes runner up and TTY don't reach SF
    • Nozomi Okuhara

UPDATED! CYF has been taken down. Who will stay on top after WC? Akane Yamaguchi or Nozomi Okuhara? It will be determined by tomorrow's final. If NO win tomorrow, she will take over AY's spot as the new queen. Otherwise, AY will remain as the queen.
