Yesterday a friend showed me a new 90-page, half-quarto sized, brightly printed book in Chinese on how to play badminton. A DVD is also provided and the whole package cost only Rmb30. He visited Hong Kong and crossed over to Guangzhou via Shengzhen to get a copy. The book's Contents include a wide variety of topics which are described mainly in point form. This book and DVD are meant to help beginners. There is no direct translation in English, unfortunately. But for the captions/titles, English was attempted but some of the badminton terms used, especially for badminton strokes/shots, were wrong. Instead of Grips, "Grasp" was used. Net Plays were termed as "Front Court Drive". And their terms for Middle Court Drive and Back Court Drive were all wrongly labelled as they include strokes taken above the shoulder and way below the waist for both the forehand and backhand. Those used to the English terminologies will be totally confused and it shows that the author is not familiar with the English equivalents. Some good points include: * The booklet is attractively printed and laid out. * Instructions seem to be simple (I don't read Chinese, though). * The pictures are of good quality though they are small and they include many world-class players from other countries, including the West. * The chapter on "Warming Up" reveals to us how the Chinese players do it. * Diagrams on simple tactics are illustrated well. * The topics covered provide the newcomer with the necessary basic knowledge about the game.
