THE PRETENDERS TAKE OVER THE ASIAN CHAMPIONSHIP
Probably the scheduling of this event has something to do with this. The World Championship wound up only a couple of weeks ago in the United States and the China Masters closes this weekend. But still the 2005 edition of Asia's premier event has attracted some exiciting names and the event promises to showcase some good matches.

Hong Kong's Ng Wei has been top seeded in the men's singles and drawn to meet Kuan Beng Hong of Malaysia in the finals, if the seeding runs true form. Seeded third and fourth are Korea's Lee Hyun Il and Boonsak Ponsana of Thailand. The best home based players, Bhat Arvind and Abhinn Shya are seeded among the 9/16 category.

The ladies singles has no Chinese or Indonesian players among the top eight. Wang Chen of Hong Kong China is top seeded with Japan's Hirose Eriko at no. 2. Two other Japanese players Mori Kaori and Yonekura Kanako are seeded 3th and 4th while India's top lady Popat Aparna is among the top eight. Top ranked Chinese, Malaysian and Indonesian players will be conspicuously missing at the Asian Championships in Hyderabad. This is unfortunate as the event has been tagged the flagship of the confederation and has always enjoyed the best from Asia. But this year, the best of the Chinese players will be Chen Jin, ranked 30th in the world and from Indonesia the 26th ranked Sony Dwi Kuncoro, the two time winner of this event. Malaysia though will have the best IBF ranked player on show - Kuan Beng Hong (right), ranked 11th in the world.

Korea's duo of Lee Jae Jin and Jung Jae Sung will be the ones to beat for the men's doubles title. Ranked no. 6 in the world, the Koreans are expected to meet Indonesia's Markis Kido and Hendra Setiawan, ranked 10th, in the final.

In the absence of any Chinese pairs, Korea's Lee Kyung Won and Lee hyo Jung have been drawn to meet Sarale and Satinee of Thailand for the champion's purse in ladies doubles. The mixed doubles event could be toss-up between Korea's Lee Jae Jin and Lee Hyo Jung and Thailand's Sudket and Saralee.

The ABC Championship is being held in the Indian city of Hyderabad between 6th and 11th of this month
