CHENGDU (China): Shuttler Mohd Hafiz Hashim's losing streak against Chinese youngster Chen Jin continued here yesterday as Malaysia's challenge in the US$250,000 China Masters was wiped out.

After losing to the Chinese in the first round of the All-England in January, the 24-year-old Hafiz was determined to exact revenge but he was beaten again 17-21, 17-21 in the quarter-finals of the six-star tournament.

Hafiz's only consolation was that he beat China's Xia Xuanze 17-21, 21-19, 21-11 in the second round on Thursday.

The win made up for Hafiz's defeat to the former world champion in the second round of the Swiss Open in January.

German Open champion Chen Jin will now take on Kenneth Jonassen of Denmark in the semi-finals.

The Dane created the biggest upset of the day when he knocked out second seed Chen Hong of China 11-21, 21-10, 21-16.

Besides Hafiz, the challenge of singles shuttler Yeoh Kay Bin and the world junior doubles champions Tan Boon Heong-Hoon Thien How also ended in the quarter-finals yesterday.

Kay Bin went down fighting 18-21, 17-21 to world number one and top seed Lin Dan of China.

In the doubles, Boon Heong-Thien How went down to second seed Cai Yun-Fu Haifeng of China 14-21, 18-21.

Malaysia's other representatives – Kuan Beng Hong, K. Yogendran, Pei Wei Chung, Lee Tsuen Seng, Tan Bin Shen-Chew Choon Eng and Gan Teik Chai-Mohd Zakry Abdul Latif – were early round casualties.

Credit, however, should be given to scratch pair Choon Eng-Bin Shen.

Both went down fighting 20-22, 21-18, 19-21 to top seed Jens Eriksen-Martin Lundgaard Hansen in the second round.
