PETALING JAYA: The Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) blundered by leaving out Mohd Hafiz Hashim in the list of qualifiers for the National Grand Prix Finals from Dec 12 in Kota Kinabalu.

Yesterday, however, they rectified the mistake but the 22-year-old Hafiz will still not play in the premier national meet.

Instead, he will represent Malaysia in the invitational World Cup in China from Dec 14-18.

BAM general manager P. Ganga Rao said: “Hafiz has indeed qualified for the Grand Prix Finals. But initially we thought he did not make it and named him for the World Cup. We had a discussion with him and it was decided that it was best for him to go for the World Cup.”

In the two leg circuit this year, Hafiz skipped the Kedah Open but reached the semi-finals at the Pahang Open. He was beaten by elder brother Roslin in the last four.

In the absence of Hafiz, the path is clear for national number one Lee Chong Wei to win his fourth consecutive national crown.

Chong Wei has been drawn in Group A with Lee Tsuen Seng, Mohd Hazwan Jamaluddin and Vountus Indra Mawan.

His main challenger for the title will be former national number one Wong Choong Hann. The lanky shuttler is in Group D with Kuan Beng Hong, K. Yogendran and Chan Kwong Beng.
