New Zealand Open schedule moves earlier this year from August 2017 to May time-slot for rebranded BWF World Tour Super 300. New title sponsor, real estate company Barfoot & Thompson to replace SkyCity in previous editions.

Two-time Olympic Champion Lin Dan will be the main attraction for this Super 300 tournament, Super Dan was sent packing early last week in Wuhan and he will take on tricky Japanese test Takuma Ueda on Wednesday. Second seed Indonesian young star Jonatan Christie finds Chinese player Zhao Junpeng in opening round while third seed 2017 SIN Superseries champion Sai Praneeth is expected to pass early hurdles. Hsu Jen Hao, Sameer Verma, Tommy Sugiarto and Kantaphon Wangcharoen are remaining seeded players of men's singles draw.

It's pretty weak line-up for women's singles, none of top-15 players participates here, Japan former A-listers Sayaka Takahashi and Minatsu Mitani will be strong contender to nail the title, barring any upsets both of them are slated to meet in semifinal. Bottom half of draw contains a string of promising youngsters, Lee Chia Hsin, Fitriani, reigning WJC Gregoria Mariska, Natsuki Nidaira and three Chinese back-ups Cai Yanyan, Han Yue, Zhang Yiman.

Defending champion Chen HL/Wang CL, Angriawan/Hardianto, Isara/Phuangphuapet, Attri/Reddy are among men's doubles seeded pairs, another notable names also registered Tan Boon Heong/Yoo Yeon Seong. In women's doubles, Indonesia brings recent BAC bronze medalist Haris/Pradipta who occupy top-seed also some experimenting pairs, same formula with Korea who also trying to forge new partnership to find lethal combination, Japan B team is represented by Fukuman/Yonao and Aratama/Watanabe. More interesting landscape in mixed doubles where some familiar faces of top-tier tournaments come to Auckland, Puravaranukroh/Taerattanachai, He JT/Du Y, Chan PS/Goh LY, Wang CL/Lee CH, Choi SG/Chae YJ and Seo SJ/Kim HN.

Threads on the same subject were merged and the official name of the tournament is by far the preferred name.

Whatever, it's good and makes sense to merge the two threads. Keep up the good work both of you, we greatly appreciate it, I'm sure you two can work hand in hand. I mean both of you are so good, one plus one equals to more than two ! :):D

The CHN MS second stringers and juniors are so disappointing, Ren Pengbo, Lu Guangzu and Zhou Zeqi are all knocked out in the qualies, only Sun Feixiang left standing after eliminating Riichi Takeshita, apart from Zhao Junpeng in the main draw, not to mention Lin Dan, of course.

CHN MS is in need of new blood soon, the still relatively young Shi Yuqi alone is barely sufficient to stave off the rising challenge and formidable threat from the rest of the world. As for CHN WS, as we know, it's in an even worse situation but, at least, there's hope in their juniors, looking bright.

Frankly, for this TUC, I don't really see CHN as the favourite in either the men's or women's events.

Bold statement but I agree. I would not count china out just yet since with team event like this mentality is an important aspect. LD may not have the best skill but his game mental is top notch. Chen Long and Shiyu Qi may just step their foot on the pedals for the game (although I am afraid of another break down of Shiyu Qi). This thomas cup will be very interesting though. I am looking forward to it

Fox often posts pictures here with colourful font too which is interesting and give us different aspect :)

You pointed out China back-ups exactly, their standard is still far from expected, lack of training and competing experience?
Women's singles, China is investing their talent now and will reap the harvest in future years.

The problem is unlike in WS, in MS China can't just pick players with superior physique, as there is a limit to how big you can get on a badminton court while still be effective. When you look at the female juniors - doubles and singles - the main criterea for development seem to be physical attributes.
China should focus more on players with natural talent for technique and creativity instead of churning out one CYF clone after the other, as they are doing right now. This might lead to worse results in the youth segment, but would produce players that are capable of finding solutions against the very top players later on. Plus, this approach would work for both MS and WS.
