The huge shock in singles category so far was created by Ukrainian Marija Ulitina who dumped London 2012 OG bronze medalist Saina Nehwal in straight-sets yesterday. The Indian jewel looked good to take leading in early stage of first game but after that 24 years old Ulitina delivered hard times for Indian jewel with her solid defense and accurate smashes. Next, the giant-killer world number 61 will take on Thailand Porntip Buranaprasertsuk for a place in last eight. Women's singles top contenders progressed to knock-out stage without much problem.

Men's singles top seed Lee Chong Wei had little trouble at first game against Derek Wong Zi Liang while his nemesis Lin Dan outplayed Vietnamese veteran Nguyen Tien Minh. Two Danish hopefuls, Viktor Axelsen and Jan O Jorgensen also cleared their last opponent in group stage smoothly. Top-three seeds, Lee, Chen Long, Lin get last sixteen bye and waiting their respective opponent at quarterfinal stage.

Mixed doubles discipline completed its quarterfinal matches, two Chinese best pairs, Zhang/Zhao and Xu/Ma through to last four and will be challenged by Indonesian Ahmad/Natsir and Chan/Goh. The Malaysian duo ended Polish Mateusiak/Zieba superb journey in Rio convincingly. London 2012 silver medalist Xu/Ma performed at right time to tame more favoured Ko SH/Kim HN, 21-17 / 21-18. Second seed Korean had an opportunity to force rubber games, Kim Ha Na wasted their chance when took leading 18-17 at second game. The Semifinal is scheduled on 06.45pm local time :
    - Zhang Nan/Zhao Yunlei (CHN) v Tontowi Ahmad/Liliyana Natsir (INA)
    H-2-H stats : 13-5 / WR : 1 v 3
Title holder is hot favourite to book another Olympic final, their last eight meetings won by the Chinese. It's now or never for Ahmad/Natsir to perform out of box and redeem painful disappointment four years ago.The mental strength is desperately needed in big event also luck factor as well. Both pairs scored straight-sets winning in all matches en route to semifinal.

    - Chan Peng Soon/Goh Liu Ying (MAS) v Xu Chen/Ma Jin (CHN)
    H-2-H stats : 2-7 / 11 v 6
Xu/Ma showed their nerve of steel in group stage match as they're drawn in tough group and experienced the brink of losing situation against Pedersen/Juhl then they turned the tables to win that important clash. Facing Chan/Goh, the world number six is favoured to prevail, they had met twice in this year with the Chinese bagged victory in last encounter in China Masters but Malaysian pair defeated them previously at homeground MAS Premiere.

Watching the replay of Yip Pui Yin vs Intanon Ratchanok. YipPY is such a temperamental player, error-prone and inconsistent. If she can stay calm and cut down on her errors, she can be a threat to the top players occasionally.
