That case is different. The author already stated:" What do you think they would say to each other ? ". And quite quickly, many exposed it as made-up, the author didn't deny it either, others misunderstood it, that's all.

I mean those who can read Chinese know straightaway that's not what the author meant. Most importantly, it's so easy for the persons involved, Lin Dan and LCW, to come out and deny it - it's not like it's a matter of their (LD and LCW's) words against his.

When I praised H K Vittinghus, Sho Sasaki, Akane Y, Wei Nan, Hu Yun, Nguyen Tien Minh recently, just to name a few, not to mention Porntip, Intanon, Goh Jin Wei, and others sometime back, why didn't you say I'm very fond of and biased towards them ?:)

As for my nationality, my location shows - Citizen of The World.:)

Whit those principles ("no smoke without fire" and "because such and such said so", "this person is the kind that would do this"), we are in for all kind of trash.
The source you menton is Cai Yun saying he heard something. He did not stated what and from where. So this is not quoting your source. Until now, there is no source.

    You're shooting the messenger.

My later posts in reply to Cheung are to express my thoughts, they don't from part of the original news. Cai Yun assumed what's going round on the Internet which he either read or heard is true, Marin's controversial remark, and gave his view, and the reporter as well, otherwise he wouldn't include it in. It's not like publishing something innocent or mild but a serious enough allegation.

Five days have passed since the supposed incident, in this day and age of the Internet, esp social media, such that news travel extremely fast in minutes, yet until today there's no clarification nor denial. When somebody put words into Lan Ping's mouth, spreading rumours that she said certain things, she quickly denied it and announced she reserved the right to sue the culprit.

Anyway, up to you to form your own opinion, fairly and responsibly, of course. Somehow I don't like your implication of my posts. You can question Cai Yun's source or the reporter's article, in the end it's probably a case of Marin's words against the hearer's. If there's a recording of the words said, that'll be best, if not, it boils down to the credibility of the witness's account. Just saying. Let's wait and see. No point guessing.

    Justin,

It's always a good practice to validate facts. Especially for potentially inflammatory comments. Even newspaper reporters have fallen for fake stories and re-reported stories which were untrue leaving egg on their faces.

Thanks to AlanY for the link

" La lesión de la china fue una estrategia"

I tried listening to the dialogue but could not actually pinpoint where she said that (I am not fluent in Spanish though and she did speak really quickly).

It reminds me of London Olympics where a few of BC posters said that Wang Xin deliberately faked injury against Saina Nehwal (bronze medal match). They had egg on their faces when her ACL injury was disclosed.

This last link is such a joke! The girl said she don't understand spanish and we can't rely on people who speak spanish so lets be "objective" and rely on baidu translate (equivalent of google translate). That's a testimony of the intellectual level of this rumour.

Beside, I could not pinpoint either any passage similar to the transcription, and I tried three times. I'll be tomorrow with a spanish speaker and I'll give her a try. They indeed speak very fast (it almost sounds like the interview was put on fast forward).

Right, you know me. Unless it's some lighthearted conversation, I'm always circumspect on such serious postings.

Let's hope someone who knows Spanish do an accurate English translation here. On the link provided by Alan Y, there's a Chinese translation on pg 4 :

    My humble translation follows:
Reporter: How do you rate your match today?
Marin: I think I'm in very good form, am delighted being able to beat Chinese players, because in London Olympics I actually lost to Li Xuerui.
Reporter: Your form is excellent, but at the last moment your opponent was injured, exactly at that time was your opportunity to take the match, what's your thought on this?
Marin: The way I see it, she could be using it as a strategy, that no doubt affected my rhythm. You know, CHN players have always been very "smart", in the past I've also seen them (CHN WS) do such things.
Reporter: All right, once again congratulations, Carolina.

Already now it's miles apart from the first translation.

X was just a Chinese strategy....
    or
She could be using it as a strategy....

And it should be seen in context of the conversation.

The latter translation makes sense and put Marin in better light, because Marin explains why she kept playing full speed, cheering for her points and victory, because as long as the opponent keep playing, they are still in a match, and she will not know if the opponent is badly hurt or not.

As I've said before, I'm no fan of her on court antiques myself. But sometimes players like her get a lot of heat for things that simply are not true (or at least they are attributed more devious or scheming motives for some of their actions, which is more or less a result of uncontrolled winning insticts).

I'm reminded of Li Xuerui's previous injury incident in the French Open 2014. In the final LXR vs WSX match, LXR in the middle of G2 suddenly walked to the umpire , pointed to her leg and conceded the match, presumably on grounds of injury.

A while later, someone on this forum wrote on LXR's thread doubting her injury and criticized her for throwing the match to WSX. Another one actually agreed with him questioning how the umpire could just let her do it without calling for the tournament doctor.

A week or two later, it was reported in the Chinese newsmedia that LXR had a surface fracture on her leg, was put on a cast, could only move about on crutches, and would be out of action for several months. Later, LXR revealed that she's one who prefer to keep under warps her injury as far as possible because she thought it serves no useful purpose to let others know, esp her fellow competitors, as nobody would give her any quarters and still want to beat her anyway, so what's the point. (I'm recalling from memory).

Oh, btw, this time LXR not only had a torn ACL, she also tore her meniscus, if what someone posted on the link is true http://api.viglink.com/api/click?

Marin thought Li Xuerui was faking injury as part of her strategy to break her rhythm, yet when LXR resumed the match, she couldn't move and each time after a couple of strokes let the shuttle land to give the point to her opponent, for the final few points.

Why didn't LXR, faking injury, thus buying time and all that, tried to win the points and surprised Marin whose rhythm was supposedly broken ? Instead she faked injury only to come back and give the opponent the satisfaction of winning the final few points ?!

Would most people, the great majority, in Marin's shoes have said what she said after winning a match when your opponent was looking injured and her movement seriously hampered ?

She could have run faster than Bolt,no problem..could have played better than 08 Olympic Lin Dan, no problem

But saying that it was Li Xuerui's greatest strategy ever deployed in a Professional match felt like a Slap on both the Li Xuerui's cheeks.

I won't be the least bit surprised that the reporter interviewing Marin was so taken aback by her remarks that he abruptly cut short the interview by congratulating her, lest she continued to make more boo-boos.

I mean , most people would've said something like, it's most unfortunate the match has to end like that, hope her injury isn't too serious, wish her speedy recovery.

Fake injury in order to lose an all-important match instead of fooling the opponent so as to win it ?

(Would anybody say LCW faked leg cramps in WC'13 to hand the world title to Lin Dan ?)

Whether Marin used words like could've,maybe, I thought , or suchlike are beside the point - the fact that she even suspected LXR's injury is faked even after the match is lost by her opponent who clearly couldn't move properly on court, is objectionable, to say the least.

I am still going to wait for a Spanish speaker to help verify exactly what Marin said. A Spanish to Chinese to English translation may have something lost in translation. However I entirely agree with Justin's translation of Chinese to English on "could have been strategy".

After the London OG WD debacle and frequent walkovers between CHN vs CHN matches over the past few years, there has been quite a bit of cynicism surrounding the CHN team re faking injuries and using "alternative" strategies, especially by quite a few European players.

I remember watching an international league match commentated by a British male and female pair of young players, and I was shocked to hear them suggest that one pair would be purposely playing poorly to allow the other pair to gain points. It's one thing to think it or suspect it personally, but as a professional commentator (or in the case of Marin as a professional player), to go on the record to make such an allegation is quite something that crosses the line, especially if they're wrong.

The translation given by Justin is just snapshot of an iPhone by an unknown person on a blog. There is no mention of the original text, not even a name.

Marin should learn from GOAT about sportmanship. True Olympic spirit is not just about winning gold medals, but also to have a gold heart. That's your true medal from God! :)

GOAT challenged a decision that favored himself.

GOAT worried about LCW when injured.

GOAT gave his drinks and a banana (which is rich in potassium known to help cramps ) to help cramped XS.

So, what's your point ? Have you asked your Spanish friend ?

I'm still waiting for a Spanish to English translation. If the Spanish conversation is true, does it matter what means of communication is used or who posted it ? The purported source was in Spanish, somebody translated it into Chinese, and I re-translated it into English as best I could, that's all, without adding or subtracting anything.

Perhaps, someone who's effectively bi-lingual in Spanish and Mandarin, might like to translate the Spanish audio clip to Mandarin and point out any discrepancy in the Chinese translation posted on the mentioned blog.

I would prefer the direct Spanish to English.
