well in the older times players play both at SS . but not olympic. very obvious that they are putting fatigue a point in their decisions during big events

My point of view here is a good WS player may not necessary be a good WD player. That is what I am trying to say. That is why I give the examples of Lin Dan. Lin Dan is a good MS player but he never play in MD. This is because Lin Dan knows that he cannot win in MD because he is not trained to play in MD. That goes the same with Saina Nehwal case. She may be a good WS no doubt but it doesn't mean that she can be a good WD player. Well I don't want to dwell so much into Saina Nehwal issue here as it can be very sensitive later. Just my personal opinion and no offense here.

I do not think Saina will be happy to just play WD. I do not think so at all. She would decline I am sure. 1st ranked player is asked to play WD while she is a sure winner for pt in WS?

Ponaapa paired with Joachim? You meant Ivanov?

I did mean Joachim. They played together in Indian Badminton League. I think that small stint with Joachim helped Ponappa a lot in her play, regarding strategies, net play and so on.

She has no choice on the matter. The coach takes the call and the player follows.

I just thought it would be a nice idea against Malaysia, since Malaysia WS is not up there now. Of course with stronger WS players later on (supposing India clears group stage) Saina needs to play WS. And in case of team events I feel personal pride is very small thing compared to team doing better.

Yes, but I think Saina/Ponappa is much better pair than Saina/Sindhu, also in that tie both Saina and Sindhu played singles(which was necessary to get points on board upfront) before playing very crucial WD, mental and physical pressure against hard working Japanese girls. But this time it is against Malaysia , so different conditions, and Saina would be fresh not playing singles, Ponappa accomplished doubles player, Saina has extraordinary net control, so many factors come into place

And finally before I stop discussing about this particular matter, I was not saying Saina/Ponappa is extraordinary doubles pairing that would definitely win against Malaysia WD, I was only saying Saina/Ponappa with Sindhu in WS is better than Sindhu/Ponappa with Saina in WS against Malaysia in group tie.

Sindhu or Saina as WS, India will definitely get a point there.
As for Saina/Ponappa vs. Woon Khe Wei/Vivian Ho, my humble feeling is that the MAS pair should handily win the match. They won the gold medal in Commonwealth 2014. They won vs. India's Ponappa/Jwala.

    Would Saina/Ponappa > Ponappa/Jwala > Ponappa/Sindhu?

It is definitely possible and India can win break the 1-1 tie with WD vs. MAS.

    Anybody predicting an early upset?
The sweet aroma comes to my nose at least. I can see Germany def THA.
Yesterday I was just watching the line ups and can really feel Germany has realistic chances.
In fact even Eng can push Den on back foot. If Fontaine win against Line K. England can go ahead winning WD and XD...
