this was taken during the MD final. you can see the 2020 Olympics hopefuls sitting on the front row and on their parent's lap.
I only attended today, the last day of competition, but I found it pretty cold in the facility. Most people were wearing winter jackets, and all the officials/volunteers were wearing GGBC sweatshirts on top of their other clothes to stay warm. I don't know how the HVAC system blows at the gym, but if it doesn't interfere with shuttle flight, I think the audience and players would appreciate it being turned on Several players spent their spare time running laps and other exercises to stay warm. A few reporters dropped by, one interviewed Mike Yang, Tony Gunawan, and Howard Bach for a radio show of some sort (Bach speaks some Mandarin, apparently!). Another reporter and TV cameraman showed up later on, around the time of MS (if I recall). The audience were really polite, but a few got up the nerve to take pictures with Tony Gunawan, he was very friendly, as always. During his MS, XD, and exhibition matches, Howard Bach asked the crowd to cheer him on, that got some laughs (and cheers ). The exhibition was a lot of fun, long rallies filled with smashes and amazing reflexes!. Right before the start of the match, Howard Bach asked for a crowd member volunteer to act as umpire/scorer, but no one came forward after several requests, so Mike Yang grabbed one of the official umpires--she had fun with all their court antics as well. Bob Malaythong was particularly loud during the last set, (almost like a women's tennis match), trying to disturb the opponents with grunts, only to have his own partner, Chandra, hit into the net several times. This got the crowd laughing a few times.
Appreciate all the exciting reports and of course... ..well, as our own GGSally wrote, i ABSOLUTELY AGREE!!!!!.. ...Thanks much again for your tiredless effort, kwun ..to monto also for giving us a quick yet descriptive recap...Sounds like you guys definitely had lots of fun!!!..Ah, noticed also that Nick Jinadasa is finally on the team, congrats as well!! :
I was sitting near the short end of the court, and couldn't quite make out what Howard was asking, otherwise I'd have volunteered. Also I wasn't sure if an umpire certificate is needed, though I know the laws of badminton quite well, after reading quite a bit on all the debates on BC about rules, and having argued with others in the past about fine points myself. I have some trouble hearing the announcement at the beginning of match of who is playing (when the crowd was still noisy) and I also don't know all the player's name, and sometimes miss the score as well. A microphone pinned to clothes for umpire would help to make him/her always clearly heard. Eva Lee had several amazing cross court net shots that caught opponent by surprise. The finalists also managed to return a strong shot after being flicked served by surprise and were wrong footed. A GGBC line watcher jokingly asked for Tony Gunawan's Yonex racket before the match, and offered to trade his with him. Tony said he had only one racket (surprise) and can't. Some finalists wore Yonex shoes, but IFAIK some aren't. Several wore shirts with their names on the back (e.g. Eric, Bob). But I don't remember seeing Tony or Howard's name on their shirt. Maybe some else can remember do they have names on their back or not. A sign of being famous when you no longer need to put up your name? Yes, it's somewhat cold inside. The only person wearing short sleeve that I can remember is a young beauty wearing thin white. Everyone else is in winter clothing, some look like they come to ski.
the Yeh twin sisters (Rulan Yeh and Rulien Yeh) have the same jersey, watch, wrist band, shoes and both of them always play 110% and way more powerful than i can ever hit despite their lack in height; the only way i was able tell them apart is by the length of their pony tail. so focused and energetic they are such a joy to watch.
So that's who. I walked over to watch WD in the corner court and noticed they played with men's power, but no idea of their name.
One other different is the color of their grid; one is green and the other pink I wonder if the umpire or opponents can tell them apart. I only watched their match a bit. Like their energy, yelling and communicating. Good players to watch.
hmm kwun do you think canada well the area I will live will have these teams as well?? Well besides the CWG.
one of umpire was able to. during one of their games, they were receiving service and they were standing on the wrong sides of the court and the umpire asked them to switch sides. the audience found that quite amusing.
there was a game on sat nite ...the twin sisters were against other sister pair from ocbc ...i think they were thai's...it was fun 2 watch them play
