lolol, yup, phelp is head and shoulder higher than LD, coz he's much taller lolol creating a new swimming event just for each type of stroke??? lolol why not badminton events for each of forehand only, backhand only, flat drives only, clearing only, smashing only, lobbing only, netting only? They are all different strokes too, each of them required different techniques and muscle requirement too. Take backhand stroke, it is very hard. Some players playing 10 years+ still can't execute it correctly. Swimmining, each stroke can be learned in days if not hours creating new swimming events just for different distance?? lolol. why not badminton MS with 5x9, 3x21 and 3x15 point system???? hey also why not events for using iso and oval rackets only? lolol
no one seems to notice that phelps nabbed 8/8 golds that he was going for. true, he had more chances to get gold, but he got it each time. this IS AN AMAZING achievement. badminton and swimming aren't the same, NO SH!T. silly thread do you really want there to be a backhand competition? a smash competition? that would devalue badminton as a sport imho, and it is a shame that other sports have more events. beach volleyball? wtf??? lets have beach badminton for christ's sake! HAH
well, it is only US media going ga ga over this 8 gold thingy. Hmm, let me try to remember a brief news report from tv since i didn't watch any of the swim events (sorry, too boring). i heard report that in the team medley event, phelps was behind (ie.lagging), and it was his team member(s) who SAVED the race. So, did phelp put on a gold performance in this medley race???? LOL He got credit for something he flopped but saved by his team member. Phelp's lucky day i guess, amazing !!!
Phelps is dominant in his field. LD is dominant in his field. They are both supreme athletes. Only difference is Phelps' dominance culminates in 8 gold medals, while for LD, just the one. Another difference is we cannot measure LD's dominance. He could have gotten lucky on his way to gold. We know that's not the case, but how do we convince other people of that? Phelp's dominanance is measurable. You can't get lucky and win 8 gold medals. Maybe 2 or 3 of those medals are lucky, but unlikely to be all 8. You also can't get lucky breaking world records. For badminton, there is no such thing as a world record. So, when the whole world praises Phelps and ignores LD, we cannot blame them. They are just ignorant of badminton. It's okay if it's just us badminton fans who know how supreme LD is and how comparable he is to Phelps.
I have to say that Lin Dan and Phelps were both amazing. However, Phelps' achievements are of a different fashion compared to Lin Dan's. The skill sets required are different, the competition formats as well. For example, Phelps races against all the finalists while Lin Dan faces one. Yet, the number of techniques as well as the strategies that Lin Dan must employ is greater than what Phelps must. So then, how are these two men comparable? In terms of who had a more difficult road to their accomplishments, I personally believe that Phelps had a slightly more difficult one this time. Not only did he have to compete in all these different events, he also had to qualify in all the heats and semifinals (one of each for each race) besides the fact that he often had less than half an hour between races. Yes, Lin Dan had many matches himself, ones that involved using different strategies and tempos for different opponents and a mental clarity/strength to keep his focus on fire and analyze his opponents' weaknesses, but he had fewer competitions, fewer opponents, and more time to rest. In the end, I respect both but I figure that in terms of athleticism though, I wouldn't have Phelps above Lin Dan, but Phelps had it tougher this time in Beijing terms of what he had to do.
Phelps competed in many disciplines [all swimming] in multiple Olympics and won many golds in the process... For more fairness, Lin Dan could be compared to Phelps better if LD played [and won medals] in multiple disciplines [all badminton]: Athens 2004 MS ... MD ... XD ... Beijing 2008 MS gold MD ... XD ... London 2012 MS ... MD ... XD ...
How can you look down on beach volley ball? At least the women beach volley ball is very "exciting" to watch. I would watch women beach volley ball over watching Phelps any day. I don't know about you though. I would strongly suggest women beach badminton... hmmm... but no Vita.M or Yu/Du, please.
for Lin Dan to equal Phelps, Badminton has to change 1. Men Team Gold (Thomas cup alike) 2. Mix Team GOld 3. Single Gold 4. Single Backhand only Gold 5. Single Forehand only Gold 6. Half court Single Gold 7. Double Gold 8. Two Racquet Single Gold

i just want to say, a lot of people feel Phelps isn't that great an Olympian, certainly doesn't deserve to be the greatest olympian ever. and i think one of the main reasons is they don't appreciate how hard it is to win a gold in swimming in the olympics. Phelps makes it look easy. in reality, the sweat, blood, tears that Phelps put into his training is probably more than anyone can ever comprehend. don't forget he needs to swim heats, semis, then finals for each of his 8 events. the work he does in the background is probably so huge few people on earth can ever even begin to comprehend. maybe it's talent, but talent didn't carry him all the way. he is truly a great olympian. having greater chances to grab more golds also means more competition. which means training that many times harder to ward off swimmers from every field. if Lin Dan had to train so hard to beat Lee Choong Wei and everyone else, then Phelps did that 8 times over. my friend loves the saying, "train hard, fight easy." and Phelps is the true, perfect example of this.
man i get so tired of swimming.. pfffff... i mean you get to do 50 m, 51 m, 52 m, 53 m 54 m..... 134 m, 135 etc. and also, you can do them in like 15.000 ways! AND THE WORST THING IS, IT'S ALL ON TELEVISION i mean if you do badminton until 7 points best of 5, til 11 points best of 5, til 15 points best of 3, 21 point best of three, 27 points best of three and then of course the choise if you do it rallypoint or the old way then all this with a short racket or not, opposite hand, not only doubles but also triples with all the possible combo's i mean god, swimming is SO ANNOYING ME last thing: i am in no way saying that swimmers are lesser athletes, in no way, definitely
total gold metals for swimming = 34 and badminton = 5. MP got 6 individuals + 2 relays, i.e. 6 + 1/4 + 1/4 = 6.5. percentage = 6.5/34 = 19.12%. LD 1 out of 5 = 20%. So, I announce that LD is the outright winner.
that's what i'm saying baby and even that is distorted lin dan got 100 percent because he only played singles, maybe you can look up how many events mp has participated to?
wrong comparison LD one GOLD = Liu Xiang one GOLD At least LD dare to face the challenge and pressure
whether we love it or hate it MP 12 : 1 LD ZN 2 : 1 LD GL 3 : 1 LD Carl Lewis 9 : 1 LD soon.... Usain Bolt 2 : 1 LD more golds mean more golds. clear cut. or we should go as, "hey, i got 4 olympic gold medals" "wow.... that is great. what events did you get it?" "hm.... 100m, 200m, 4X100m and 4X400m. all i do is run" "err.... nothing to shout about. i also can run with 2 legs....."
