Zhao Jianhua - as mentioned earlier in the thread (last year!); there is no way to predict where he was aiming until the shuttle passes the net. Hariyanto Arbi - similar to ZJH but a lot more tricky. Sigit Budiarto - did I see him jump metres high at the Glasgow world championship? Not only are they really high, they can be supremely deceptive. Nowadays I suppose Fu Haifeng takes the cake - all power focused into that single spot on the racquet.
i know there's a reason for bending the knees, i'm learning that very reason now . BUT...it still makes the jump seem much higher than it is really. i didn't say they do it to make it look high. just a by-product
Thomas Laybourn has a nice smashing from his overhead when he jumps to his left using his left foot. most people wouldn't be able to jump that high and far on left foot (assuming right handers). can anyone most more pics of him doing smashes?
wanna find this fabulous photo... guys, nice thread... i came across a fabulous pic previously when i browsed thru this forum sometime ago, and i cant seem to find it again after 2 days of searching this forum... its a lindan jump smash pic taken from a game between lindan and leehyunil. the pic is taking from rear left hand side of the court when lindan is airbourne, about to execute his jump smash, while leehyunil on the other far side of the court, is standing ready, looking at lindan, to receive the smash... the expression in leehyunil's face is priceless... its like almost saying.. "sh*t"... it really captures the moment... guys, if any of u have this photo, pls post it here... i want it for my wallpaper... thanks...
Based on recent tournaments Jung Jae-Sung is getting my vote. Not 100% consistent, but when he really gets hold of one (his trademark shout usually accompanies these) it's NOT coming back. He's an absolutely tiny man (less than 5' 6'', by the looks of it), which makes it all the more impressive. Just watch the AE2008 final - there are loads of JJS "shouters" in that match.
The grandfather of all doubles jump smasher was Ng Boon Bee at slightly over 5 feet stature. Opponents use to be bewildered for since the shorter Ng would play at the back and the taller Tan Yee Khan at the front until the shuttle hit their eye from Ng's leaping smash. The next great doubles jump smashers Kim Moon Soo, Cheah Soon Kit, Rexy, Bambang, Sigit, Chandra and Ha.
My Gosh, Lee Chong Wei has so many 'tiger balm patches' on his knee especially the patellar region...probably the price to pay for having a world class jump smash.
I took these images at the All Englands this year when working for Badzine. Some nice jump smashes. Mark P
