Cooler, I was simply responding to the question posed in the original thread author's post. I interpreted this statement as indicating that corey0528 was surprised Tony G was able to make the finals in MS, beating Mike Beres. As for my comment on rankings, I was responding to Qidong's statement "Look like Jimmy Pohan is the #1 ranked player in US. Kevin Han is #5, Tony Gunawan is #10. No wonder he can beat Tony." I am merely suggesting that one be cautious when using the rankings to state who should be able to beat who. I used Kevin Han as an example of a player who is most likely to be a better player than his ranking shows. I realize that most people already understand this but I felt the point needed to be made anyway. I hope this clears it up.
surprised Yes, i was surprised that Tony G. beat Mike Beres. The only reason i was surprised was because i never knew Tony played singles at an international level. I always thought he was a doubles specialist, but you have all convinced me that he is also a top notch singles player.
Yes, actually, he is an assistant coach. The two head coaches are Edith Hayman (coached for over 50, or was it 30 years), and Dominic Soong (previous #2 in world for MD, #2 Singles Malaysia I think). I'll write down whatever I learn for my own reference, so I can post it here as well. Phil
I think the bigger surprise of the Boston Open for me is the fact that Andy Chong/Chibing Wu beating Mike Beres/Kyle Hunter in MD finals. That was probably one of the better matches in this year's Boston Open.
