    I would say...

..by sheer accomplishments and achievements through her ridiculously humongous collection of titles, and i mean Gold medals, Gao Ling is by far, bar none, and hands down THE BEST WOMAN badminton player in the world, if not in CHN's Women's squad, the last decade or so. It's too bad i didn't have a chance to witness her earlier years, but I think when it's all said and done and by the time she retires, she will become arguably one of the top 3, if not the top 5, badminton women players in CHN's storied badminton history.
Personally, by looking at her career, durable is the one word i will remember her with.

Gao Ling - holder of the most number of titles?
    Yes, sir.

Gao Ling - the best woman badminton player in the world?
    No way, sir.

Take any of the critical aspects - control, power, stamina or variety - and it's evident that Zhang Ning or Susi Susanti would run circles around Gao Ling. IMHO, even Gong Zhichao had far better skills than Gao Ling has.

And if you were to weigh Gao Ling against Li Lingwei, it simply wouldn't balance, much less swing in the former's favour.

As a doubles player, none of Gao Ling's achievements have come of her own individual merit or effort. Contrast that with Li Lingwei who was no less than the queen of the court, excelling as she did in both singles and doubles :)

PS: Your 'decade' does make it less contentious :)

    Yes..

..i concur, there are many "older" players who may be or are "better" than her; never mentioned she is "the all-time best player in the world";)..But, yes, i also wrote "..in the last decade";)..There are only a handful of women players, this past decade or so, who can match or come close to GL's accomplishments/achievements..

If you believe there are other players better than her it is fine but to disparage her talent, determination, effort and achievements is just asinine. Gao Ling is a doubles specialist who excels at what she does at the highest level of competition in the world and she has done that for a very long time. Her partners have changed but she keeps winning.

Are you implying that just because she plays doubles, she cannot garner any merit because she did not individually win even a single doubles game? I guess you ruled out all doubles players who never played singles as having no "individual" merit in their achievements.

Well, this is what you are implying :D
I can't see any such implications in my post.

Well, maybe you can clarify about what you meant then. ;)

The general impression I get is that Gao Ling is getting the short shrift because "it's evident that Zhang Ning or Susi Susanti would run circles around Gao Ling." I would take GL over ZN and SS in a doubles game everyday. :D

Cannot compare GL with Susi or ZN, cos they are single player. Diff skill and technique between them. ZN and Susi maybe not a good WD player, and so GL maybe not a good player if she plays WS.

Diff with Li Lingwei, she played both, but she played more single than double. And she didnt play in double too long.

I might be not agree to put GL as the best player. Which one is better Gao Ling or Ge Fei or maybe Gu Jun?

Gao Ling is one of the greatest doubles player. No doubt about that.

She might be the highest international achiever in doubles along with Ge Fei :) If you want to compare GL with anyone, compare it with GF. I think they're both the commander on the court, not the 'executioner'.
