Colour of the hat 25th QUESTION (24th OCT 2007): (A) black hat facing wall from the left; (B)white hat, (C) followed by black, (D) then white, facing the wall from the other side. Four men are standing in a line as shown above and they cannot turn their heads. There is a brick wall between A and B that they cannot see through. They know that they each have one hat, and that of the four hats two are black and two are white. They cannot see the color of the hat that they are wearing. In order to be released from the line, they must call out the color of their hat. If they are wrong, no one can leave. They are not allowed to talk to each other, and they have been given ten minutes to figure out their hat color. After 1 minute: * One of them calls out -- which one called out? * How can he be 100% certain of the color of his hat? This is not a trick question and there are no outside influences or any other ways of communicating. They cannot move or see behind them, nor can they see through the wall.
"C" calls out. If "C" is white, "D" will know he's black and calls out. Since "D" keeps quiet, "C" must be black.
A |wall| B C D A & B are standing on either side of a wall. B is followed by C and D which means, C can see the color of B's hat and D can see the color of both B and C's hats. If B and C had the same color hat, D would have immediately shouted the color of his hat (since there are 2 black and 2 white hats). Because of D's silence, C concludes that the color of his hat is different from that of B's. Since B is wearing a white hat, C shouts that his hat is BLACK.
My conclusion is the same as what govindbn has described. D would have made the first call stright away if B and C have the same colour hat. For the fact that D did not make a call after 1 minute, C will be sure he has a different colout hat as B, thus C will make the first call saying "Black". After C made the call, B can then also confidently called "White" and also released from the line. But D and A will forever stuck there, won't they? I dont have a solution there but Angela did not ask for that either!
In fact, I don't really understand Angela's question until I saw govindbn's solution. I agree with govindbn.
i was dumbstruck too. my brain must be in shut down mode. the explaination by govinbdn are very logical though i cant claim i thought of it on my own. i am simply concurring with his conclusions.
what govindbn said, i completely agree with. also to add to that about how to figure out D and A's hat color. they won't be stuck forever because you already know the hat color of B and C, all A and D have to do is yell a different color each time and they will eventually be released from the line when they get it right. They do have 10 minutes and only 1 minute was used. plenty of time to figure out the right sequence even if they went WWBB, WBWB, WBBW, BWWB, BWBW, BBWW... =P
While.. ..we wait for our Angela to come back and give us an update on the current puzzle/riddle, here's 1 that i'd like to contribute & entertain you guys with....This one, some or most of you probably have seen before & should be a piece of cake (our angelatby most likely should figure this one out).. As for the possible answer(s), it can be more than 1.. ========================================================== If you can figure out what these words have in common, you are a lot smarter than I am. cept for the first letter, every other letter after is a mirror image (there's a specific name for it, but i forgot) (B) an a na <---a being the middle, an, na is mirrored (D) res ser <-- res, ser mirror (G) ram mar (p) ot a to (R) ev i ve (U) ne v en (A) ss e ss
I'll.. ..let our angelatby give the "Ding! Dink! Ding! Dink! Ding!", if it's the correct answer...Hmm, any other possible answer(s)??..
Yes, it is a palindrome, meaning to say A word, phrase, verse, or sentence that reads the same backward or forward. It's already been said, but by removing the first letter of each, you create what is called a "palindrome," a fancy way of saying a word that is spelled the same backwards and forwards.
On top of that, repeating pattern of words also acceptable, but example must be given. Am i suppose to reveal the answer that fast ...

Well... ..there's the confirmation answer, folks (yes, thanks for the answer also, Angela)....Yes, the answer is all of them are "Palindrome". And all of the first letters happen to be capitalized. And another possible answer is, there are AT LEAST 2 consonants and 2 vowels in each word...So, for those who gave an answer, give yourself a big round of applause.. *Btw, looks like Linus and robin7 are officially tied for 1st place..
Hi I was away for two months but it seems that I haven't missed anything. What is happening with riddles? Is this thread closed?
i think the owner are quite busy so i guess this thread died a natural death. unless of course the owner came back or somebody else picks up her mantle.
