Yes, it's moderately to quite painful. You'll be on medication for a bit to minimize the swelling and pain.

Get plenty of rest and take it easy.

Thanks for the advice, would still rather chicken out...
I'm sure it isn't going to be as painful as the last few months though.

Well, if you are not going to be sedated when the dentist pulls, it can be. Happened to me. Not fun. :p

    Had some out ages ago.
Had complications with one that was growing forwards along the gum into the teeth in front of it rather than upwards.
Could hardly open my mouth for 3 days, and they bashed a nerve so that I lost all feeling in my tongue for about 3 months.

I'm sure I had one out quite a while after that that didn't cause much fuss though.

Have some STRONG painkillers ready though, just in case.

    wow.

im only 16 but I had 2 wisdom teeth extracted on 2 different occasions.
Yep it hurts alot! The swelling was err...very horrible and my mouth was like numb...

The worst is the psychological effect it has on me. Ive never plucked teeth before and now that I have to pluck teeth for my braces, I get really nervous and scared when im sitting on the dentist's chair..

The bleeding was...weird, I felt as if I was vommitting blood non-stop for a fe hours.

Fever came at night. But I was being disobedient and went to school for exams and then badminton later in the afternoon..., yep and with that fever, and im still alive.

Get this:My fren had FOUR wisdom tooth extracted all at once.OUCH!
Actually, the doctor gave him an option that was wether to have only one extracted at a time.
But,he chose to have all four extracted all at once as he didn't want to drag it for too long.
The operation costed him around RM 4-5k (which is pretty pricy i would say or is that just the standard fee that they charge?)

His face was so swollen and he had to live on porridge,ice-cream,yogurt-basically nothing that requires chewing and biting and of course, painkillers as well to ease the pain.

:D You're supposed to encourage him not tell horror stories :p . Having said that I've had all of mine removed as well but in two sessions. I think you can forget about sports for 2 weeks but at least you'll won't have to worry about your tooth anymore, you'll just be drooling for a week and indeed I had fever as well but then you can finally eat something real again  .
I'll save my horror stories for after your visit ;) ...

I am going to schedule to remove mine within the next several weeks. Let me see if I can hold off at least after the chinese new year. The operation and the horrible follow ups should be bad enough, and miss out the big dinner is no-no for me. :p

Ouch but concur with the rest of the gang here...

:p...I know every situation(s) are different, and depending on the severity of it, you should be back to norm with a few weeks...Personally, i had mine extracted (2 of them) also-more to prevent/stop degrading conditions than anything else..They were removed(last time abt more than 2 yrs ago) on separate extractions, though, i think 2-3 yrs apart(and 1 of them is similar to Neil Nicholls' condition, although i was lucky enough that none of my jaw's nerve was damaged)...:p
But, Rich1707, i think you might be a bit lucky as only 1 is being extracted..So, just take it easy, put lots of ice and hope you'll get well soon!;)

i just had two of mine pulled last month. there seems to be two types of wisdom teeth, the ones that actually managed to get out of the gum, and become a normal teeth, or the ones that got lodged inside the gum and forever stuck there.

well, i have two of each type. the removal of the former type is quite straight forward and not too painful. it was a bit sore for the day and the next day it was OK.

the latter type requires surgery removal which my dentist suggested but i am going to wait till when it is very neccessary. i can imagine that to be rather painful as they need to cut through the gym. yikes...

There's nothing like watching a movie to calm yourself down and relax before a tooth extraction. Personally, I highly recommend the "Marathon Man" especially the scene involving Dustin Hoffman, Sir Laurence Olivier and various dental implements. It's a classic.

I did it twice. All 4 of my wisdom teeth didn't grow normally.

First time I needed to remove 1 of them in order to fix a decay on the teeth in front to it. I was working for a big company which provided very lousy dental insurance. The insurance company only paid to num locally. I lied there for 45 minutes keep smelling something burning, which probably was the worst 45 minutes in my life. It hurt for almost 1 week, and the follow-up showed there was infection. I had to do another deep cleaning to fix it. That was terrible.

Second time, I worked on a smaller company but provide excellent dental insurance. I was put to sleep and the oral surgeon pulled all 3 out. I didn't feel anything during the surgery. The pain was gone in 1 or 2 days - no infection.

It's definitely painful. And your jaw will be square for a few days, at least all of my friends became some polygonal.

Hi all, thanks for the horror stories, i'm glad i looked at them when i got back !! Anyway, back at work today.

Never had so many injections in my life, because the tooth wouldn't come out, he hacked and hacked and hacked at it for seemed like eternity but it's out now.
Although the nurse was pretty ;-)

Gum and jaw ached a lot last night but with the help of ibruprofen all is fine today'ish.

Going to celebrate with a nice big pizza tomorrow night.

I had my impacted wisdom teeth (2) pulled out a couple of years ago. I was sedated and monitored by an anaesthetist. The dentist is a specialist in this type of operation.

After the operation, I was given antibiotics, anti-inflammation and pain killer.

:D Good almost like mine except the nurse wasn't pretty :p . Was at the specialist. First visit they injected so much I almost fainted while waiting for my turn (2 seperate procedures) and at the 2nd visit they had lowered the dosage and I could actually feel them messing around in my mouth, hurt like hell because of all the pulling. Felt just about everything they did :( . Anyway all in all the worst was the 2 inch needle for the sedation going in 4/5 times right through the bone *ouch* freakish pain :p . But glad it's the only thing I've ever had wrong with my teeth so nothing to worry about anymore  .
