First, thanks to those who try to help... Have a Compaq Presario 2529CL Laptop that I bought off of someone for my gf to use for school.... First problem was bad hard drive...got that replaced and was working fine. Last night, she's working on an essay and computer crashes. Now it won't boot up...get the blue screen of death Error is Unmountable Boot Volume Did a search and found some possible ways to fix it but nothing will work. Using original OS CD (Windows XP Home SP1, 2002) I try to use the recovery option but it hangs up when it starts "Examining startup environment" I have system restore disks but they wipe out all data and I need to try to get the essay back. Tried creating boot disks but for some reason, they won't work either. Can't boot up in safe mode either. I'm trying to get to a Dos prompt so I can try the fixes but so far I've been unsuccessful. Any ideas anyone????
What silentheart said - more than likely it's a problem with the RAM or the hard disk itself ie even new hard disks could have problems, one of the really unlucky ones to get it. Just did similar diagnostics on some of the PCs here with the same problem.
First try resetting the bios to the default setting, and then see if you can boot to a bootable floppy or CD (but not from the hard drive). There are some free utilities or limited trial software from the internet that works from a bootable media. Try running some non-destructive diagnostics and then try booting from the hard drive. If the laptop does not boot at all, pending on your ability and the laptop's warranty, you could pull out the hard drive, get a special data connector ($25-$30), and plug it into a PC, and use the PC to recover your GF's essay. Cheers!
bah....looks like it's an issue with the hard drive again... When tested the first hard drive, Compaq rep sent me a diagnostics tool...found original hard drive had a problem...so the guy who sold it to me, got me a new one.... I ran the same "quick test" on this one and it came out negative.... But for fun, I ran the "Advanced Test" and it found there was a bad sector So unfortunately for me, it's an issue with the hard drive again. So my only option is to try to retrieve data on this hard drive and go buy a new one. Cost me too much time and effort to send this one out back to the guy so he can get me another one. Thanks for the help. Tim
Speaking of laptops (and PCs)...how about saying GOOD BYE to those.. ..(don't know if any of you guys seen these pics before or not).. Good Bye Laptops Amazing technology from Japan . . . but can you guess what it is ? Look closely and guess what they could be... Are they pens with cameras? Any wild guesses? No clue yet? Ladies and gentlemen... congratulations! You've just looked into the future... yep that's right! You've just seen something that will replace your PC in the near future. Here is how it works: In the revolution of miniature computers, scientists have made great developments with bluetooth technology.. . This is the forthcoming computers you can carry within your pockets This "pen sort of instrument" produces both the monitor as well as the keyboard on any flat surfaces from where you can carry out functions you would normally do on your desktop computer. Can anyone say, "Good-bye laptops!"
Goodbye? No way. I prefer to have some spring to react and soften the stress on my digits during typing rather than the hard thump of a hard surface such as the tabletop. Normal keyboards can already contribute to Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, this is likely to aggravate it. An 'air-keyboard' ala Zion mainframe is probably better. Still, you don't know if you've made a mistake in typing until you look at the screen because there aren't any feel to the keys when you type aka the 'nipples' on the keyboard, the longish/L shape of the Return key or the Spacebar. Still, if space is scarce and non-permanent, then it would be fine.
New transparent screen from Apple computer.. ...check out this new technology...hmm, Oldhand, since you're an Apple aficionado, mind chiming in your input/opinion on this??...They're very cool, i may say..
It's a new time-killing fad ...a cam, chroma-key, FCP... and you're go Incidentally, you can do the same on a PC... ...although it might not look as cool
