Bintang bulutangkis Taufik Hidayat bakal bersanding dengan Ronaldinho dan lain-lain. Dalam siaran pers yang diterima detiksport, pengumuman pemenang penghargaan tersebut akan dilakukan dalam sebuah acara yang akan dilaksanakan pada 9 April 2006 mendatang di People's Congress Hall, Beijing. Taufik yang merupakan juara tunggal putra Kejuaraan Dunia 2005 akan bersaing ketat antara lain dengan sejumlah nama atlet top dunia seperti pebasket asal Amerika Serikat Tim Duncan, Ronaldinho (sepakbola/Brasil), Fernando Alonso (Formula 1/Spanyol), Kim Clijsters (tenis/Belgia) dan Roger Federrer (tenis/Swiss). Selain nama-nama di atas, pemegang rekor dunia lompat galah Putri Yelena Isinbayeva dari Rusia, dan pemegang rekor dunia lari 10.000 meter putra Kenenisa Bekele dari Ethiopia turut meramaikan bursa World Top ten Athletes. Selain Taufik di cabang bulutangkis, Cina juga menempatkan atletnya seperti Xie Xingfang, kemudian Guo Jingjing (Loncat Indah) dan Liu Chunhong di (Angkat Besi). Di cabang Renang Michael Phelps dari Amerika Serikat juga masuk dalam daftar nominasi. Pada penyelenggaraan ke-20 ini, Cina Sports Publications Corporation yang dipercaya sebagai penyelenggara akan mengundang para atlet top dunia yang masuk dalam daftar nominasi pada kegiatan serupa sebleumnya. Tidak itu saja, bahkan para anggota Komite Olimpiade IOC, Panitia Olimpiade Beijing 2008 dan Panitia Olimpiade sebelumnya turut diundang untuk berpartisipasi pada kegiatan ini. Para atlet yang masuk dalam daftar nominasi World Top Ten Athletes ini akan dipilih berdasarkan voting oleh seluruh Rakyat Cina yang ada di seluruh belahan dunia. are u sure it's world top athletes nominee and not top asia? (i'm not saying taufik and xxf aren't but badminton isn't seen as world top sport, yet)
yes, taufik will compete with ronaldinho, alonzo, tim duncan,xxf, etc and the judges are came from (only) chinese voters via sms or internet , china government who hold the award
Strange that since it's Chinese voters they wouldn't vote LD. Not that Taufik is not worthy of the award, just curious that they wouldn't vote him for the title.

i think this award is the first time which is held by china gov, and the nominees are based on they have done in years betwen 2004-2005
