First, go to the articles section and find the one on "grip." That will tell you if you're actually holding the racket wrong or not.

Just practice those hits, have someone smash to you and try to hit it over their head. Alternatively, you could just hit drop shots to counter their smashes I guess.

Ok if you want to hit it far back so they will have a hard time smashing again, use more wrist, stand low with ur knees bent and be ready. Watch carefully to see what direction the bird is heading then swing it with a snap to send it far back.

For close to the net returns, do the same thing but less wrist and step forward. Its a slow smooth motion with ur body kind of and just slight make contact with the bird. The force the smash has should bring it over the net.

Try to hit the bird before it passes ur body. Get to it eariler when its still around a foot infront of you or more.

There is no problem with the racquet. The problem lies within yourself.

Hey, jaylhw1, but you've already received a number of good advices. xkenji, e.g., gave you a lot of nice tips worth to follow!
    .
And if it is still hard for you to lob then just block it or drive it back. Personally instead of only wrist I'm trying to use underarm (and add almost no wrist) and make a short (very short and fast) movement.
Try all this and while getting used to this you'll slowly develop a harder shot you need.

Hi jaylhw1.. no strenght its one of the causes.. how you "grip" the racket is also one of the causes.. The most important thing is how fast your foot movement..

Two situation when return back the bird to the opponent:
1- at the middle of the net, your chances of return back the bird to base line is 90%.
2- If you late, half court lol..
Just my 2 cents.. :D tq

Hmmm Another problem might be hitting it too high. Try hitting it more flatter will also help. And Maybe the way you hold the racket. But also keep in mind practise will help you develope what you neeed. =] (coach too)

Reflexes can also be a part of it. Hell if ur opponent smashes it like crazy then wut are ur chances of hitting it back at all?

After clearing, before the smash....(first) is it a deep clear???...
    (1) grip?
    (2) where is your racquet while you preparing to defend?
    (3) where do you stand in the court?
    (4) how are you feet placed, parallel to the net, or racq-foot or non-racq foot forward?
    (5) which way is your torso facing?
    (6) where is the weight on your feet?
    (7) are your knees bent?

    During the smash
    (8) what do you do "just" before your opponent contacts the shuttle, ie/ feet? weight? knees? torso? arm? wrist? racquet?

    When contacting the smash
    (9) where is your racquet when you contact the shuttle in relationship to your body?
    (10) which face of the racquet are you using?
    (11) what is the relationship of the positions starting from your torso, shoulder, elbow, wrist, and racquet
    (12) is there any weight transfer on your feet?

As suggested, finding a good coach will definitely help.

But seriously, the initial factor of learning to use the "search" feature on this forum will give you 10% head-start into developing your defensive returns!

    Cheers!
