    hi got some qns.
it's not really about places to play, or grps or anything. juz wan some singaporean-based opinions.

    1) Is it morally wrong to sneak into a court (when you didn't pay for it), when nobody is on the court? with the bookin lady incharge constantly chasing you away.

( heard u guys call it playin cat n mice in some other thread, esp significant in CCK hall )

    2) when you see two people on a court playing. whether half court or full court. and you have a friend with you and no court. is it alright to ask them to "lend" you the other half?

some people agree, and even propose to play doubles. but some people say yes with a contradicting expression on their faces...>_<

    3) if one day you really really really want to hit some shuttles desperately, all your friends are out, you have no courts anywhere. will you resort to visitin nearby courts/halls to look for people to play with you? (hopefully you see a court with 3 people)...

    4) sometimes when you see teenagers who do not know how to play properly (a large group with guys and girls), playin badminton just to flirt and party around, (not seriously and erhmm, they're just hittin and missing shuttles), is it normal to feel as though they are "wasting" the court..? (esp if you couldn't get the court due to late bookin). the feelin of you cant do anythin but to watch pple fool around and waste the court. when actually whether the net was there anot, they probably wun feel the difference..

    5) do you take note of pple playing on other courts? and form impressions about their forms, style and playing..?

    6) do you feel extremely restricted when you see some extremely strong and skilled person playing near you?

Well thanks in advance, juz wanna hear some opinions. cox i don't realli find such "outside badminton" yet related topics around. just wanna ask. hehe...and it seems lik badminton halls realli need more chio bus around, every day seeing uncles, very boring one. LOL

1)I think it's morally wrong.although i admit i would sometimes 'sneak' into an unuse court.but if the booking lady in charge chase me away,i would not step into the court again.who wants to have a person chasing u always anyway?

2)i have no opinions but i wun encourage it either.i never done that before, anyway,it's not ur court.if u want to play,go and book a court urself.

    3)i wun.no matter how tempted i feel.:)

4)i disagree STRONGLY dat the teenagers are just wasting courts.let them enjoy the feeling of playing badminton.no matter how lousy or bad their skills are.or even if they are not playing it seriously.it's just for leisure for them anyway.

5)sometimes.but usually,i either do not have the time or they are no one playing beside my court.

    6)maybe?

you sound very young... here's my two cents from an uncle :D

    1) My kakis and I always do that. Why let the courts go to waste? It depends on which sport hall you go to:
I once played at delta and exceeded the playing time. The lady in charge shouted at me. Was there a need to shout?
At bishan, they would just switch off the lights. If you want to book again, they tell you it will take 20 more minutes for the lights to warm up.
At spe, tampines, hougang and jurong east, they leave you alone which is great!

    2) I would ask them politely if my friend and I can join in and offer to share the costs of the courts/shuttles.

    3) why not? dun be shy, you will make more friends and have more badminton kakis then.

    4) Its just one way of socialising, just going pubbing or hanging out somewhere. You cant fault those take the effort to wake up early to book the courts right? Maybe you can join the badminton clubs who take in serious players only.

    5) I drop by sport halls when I'm bored and watched the players play. Its just like watching tournaments right? I try to learn by observing how these players play: what you should do, what you should not do, what choice of shots you make etc. You may feel that you can easily beat these 'weak' players but its a different story when you step into the court. Imagine hundreds of spectators watching you. :)

    6) If you take it positively, you will learn a lot from these 'extremely strong and skilled person'. If you take it negatively, you will find yourself very stressed and you will not enjoy the game.

PS. do you really need chio bu in sport hall to inspire you to play better? :)

    1) i think it is wrong and i would feel pretty awkward while playing on the court. i would always be cautious of that woman chasing me. :p

    2) yes, i think it is alright...you could also challenge them to a friendly game of doubles. my friend and I had this happen to us many times...since the losers are expected to leave the court.

    3) sure, i would do this. great way to meet new people with common interests.

    4) i would feel like they are wasting the court, yeah, but what can i do? they have the court so they have a right to play on it however they want (excepting dangerously ofcourse!).

    5) yes, i watch the better players to see how my game differs from theirs...its almost like studying match tapes but the match is live and isnt as intense as the pros (they sometimes do get pretty intense though). :p

    6) no, not really. i feel better since i would want to keep up with that person if i could. if not, no harm in trying.

who ever pays for the courts get the rights to use it. even if they wanna just sit there and chit chat you cant do anything. they paid for it. i do agree that no matter how lousy they are they should just enjoy the game. interest and passion will make them better player. if you tell them too much then they may think they are lousy at it and try other 'easier' options.

if there are insufficient players on their side or you are keen to play doubles w them, ask if they are keen and offer to provide shuttle, rememeber they dunno you....they may think you are the kind who want to play for free and expect them to pay for the court and shuttle.

    1. What is morally correct anyway? Is it correct to charge $7.40 per hour? There are courts where the lighting is very badly postioned, very dim, very strong draught from the air-conditioning and even after complaining nothing changes. I think at 7am in the morning when there's hardly anyone playing,it is very petty for the person in charge to ask you to stop playing just because you have not booked the courts. Sometimes the booked courts are not used at all,and I do not see any reason why you should not use the courts. Its time SSC relaxed some of the rules and let people just play.

    2. I dont think you need to "lend" the other half, just ask them if they want to play doubles, and most of the time they are just waiting for company, and why worry about the expression on their faces, just play and eventually they will learn to have fun.

    3. There's an old Uncle who plays in Bukit Gombak who use to come around and join in on any court that was looking for people, great attitude, play anywhere, anytime with anyone. At the end of the game you would have made some new friends. You will even see courts with one person because all his friends could not make it, so if you need a game there's always someone ready to play.

    4. Just a personal opinion, if you are not serious and looking to flirt, party around then I dont think you should consider booking the indoor courts, its just a waste of money. There are plenty of outdoor courts available, and even the CC's are a good option. Leave the indoor courts to people who really want to play and have a good workout.

    5. There's so much you can learn from just watching people play, especially the good ones, just watch them move around the court, the way they hit the shuttle, sometimes when you are not playing just go down to the courts and just observe.

    6. No reason to feel restricted, just a great chance to learn and if you get a chance to play with them or against them even better, your game will definitely improve playing against the really good players. Even if they thrash with zero points, you would still learn a lot.

well, thanks all for ur comments.

i have several more questions that are not really badminton related, yet still related in some way.

    1) how skilled do you have to be in order to wear badminton shirts? i find this an awkward question to ask, but sometimes when i see some unskilled players wearing badminton shirts, i wonder ,if i did wear one, whether people will see me in the same light. how skilled do you have to be to wear badminton shirts? especially those flashy ones. ive seen people (who seem like it's their first time playing ), wearing badminton shirts and holding expensive rackets. feel as though something is wrong. i only own one or two, which i wear rarely.

    2) i realize pro players like to swipe their sweat in a unique manner. like starting from the both sides of the face and then splashing them on the floor. i do not doubt the fact that it is cool, but...., do pple realli go n mimic them

well, just two this time....things that im wonderin about.

Shirt is probably the thing one should worry the least about in badminton. It has little or no impact on the player's performance. For the layman like us - it all boils down to comfortability and affordability.

If one has a low skill level but lots of cash and wanted the latest Yonext shirts then so be it. Same vice versa. Agree some design is quite flashy (bright yellow/orange for example) - but is is all personal preference.

It is the same that we see a lot people wearing football jersey from top clubs/players. Sportwear has become part of the fashion - and no relation with the skill of the sport.

So if you like it and can afford it, go ahead and wear it, and need not worry what other thinks. :)

    Cheers!

haha interesting thread. got pretty much to say

firstly i would always play in a court if it is unoccupied even if i didn't book it. if someone who booked came along i would of course leave. who gives a damn to the cc anyway. overcharging us for that.......MULTI PURPOSE HALL. it's not even a badminton hall and in some CCs the flooring is tiled and lousy. the lightings need 30 mins to warmup and the ball keep getting stuck somewhere up there, and u have to get a chair to take it down

as for non-serious noobshits, it can get quite pissing if u see them too often, especially when they only utilize half of the court(they don't have strength to hit to the far end:D). however i'd leave them alone as i myself is quite lousy:crying: ...

by the way i have 2 badminton shirts, but dare not wear them to play because i'm afraid i'd be laughed at for playing too poorly. instead i'd wear these clothes out casually.

when i see others in the opposite court. i WILL challenge them to doubles 99% of the time. unless they're really those hopeless type. i usually win:D

as for half court playing, i don't like it and has NEVER trained half court before. i know many people say it's a good way to train, but it simply sucks for me. when i went to badminton CCA trial in my school they were trial-ling half court. so insincere....i didn't get in in the end. maybe i was too nervous and didn't dare to smash at all, just kept clearing and dropping. or perhaps my standard is just too low.( i've never got proper coaching before:( )
so i don't like it when people request that i share half the court for them to play, unless they're damn good and they might share me some tips on the game.

when i'm resting i'll often look at the opp court players. however, if there was a pretty girl and a super strong player, i'd be more likely to look at the girl more whahahaha

as to being pressurized by very good players........................i've never seen a player good enough to pressurize me yet:p but i'll usually challenge them. i've been thrashed before of course, but i truly enjoy being thrashed.
