that's a minor issue. i originally thought china protested and bwf gave in, like they did when bwf wanted a 5 x 9 scoring system around 2006. it would be a miracle if bwf lets the cas arbitrate the registration bylaw, but i wouldn't hold my breath. it's a major 'control' issue for bwf. does any other sports governing body indirectly interfere with an athletes conditions of participation and employer/employee relationship to such an authoritarian degree? nope. it's illegal.
it's good for lzj, but not a happy ending for the global big picture... bam doesn't want its dirty laundry continually trashed in public. nor do they (bam & bwf) want to lose control of their players and jobs. if anyone sues bam or bwf in a malaysian civil court it would not look good while the trial is in progress or end well for them. this is a major setback for the athletes.

The outcome will be officially announced next week after it's brought to BAM council. https://www.bharian.com.my/amp/berita/nasional/2022/01/915363/zii-jia-tolak-tawaran-gaji-rm1-juta LZJ rejected BAM's offer of MYR$1 mil per year. English language press will reporting on this tomorrow, just post what's available 1st.
i disagree. as i've laid out in my many posts on this issue, a players union is not the answer. a union would have zero power, just like the players rep on the bwf council... it's farcical. the only necessary resolution is the registration bylaw must be abolished.
https://www.thestar.com.my/sport/ba...each-win-win-settlement-after-sanction-appeal LZJ can go pro/be independent players under certain conditions. Next week announce the details after get approval from BAM Council.
Only that she met the Sports Minister today, after LZJ. Sairol Ayub said both Goh JW & her club KLRC will appeal the ban. Need to wait till they file official appeal first. https://www.thestar.com.my/sport/ba...tion-looks-positive-after-meeting-with-faizal
Actually how much more can a player earn under pro vs under bam? I am very much skeptical for the point ppl said, "bam invested so much in their players and can't simply just let their players go pro" bam is a national organization, it is not a sdn bhd. The kpi is not on how much they earn, but rather how many good players the produce. An independent player still bares Malaysian flag, and should still do Malaysia proud if they perform at tournaments. If that affects bam kpi because they are not registered under bam, shouldn't bam consider to include independent players in their kpi? There is an inherent limitation for bam to compete with private sponsor. Private sponsor only need to take care to limited numbers of players, who are successful in the sports already. Bam, and other national council need to take care of a large group of national players. As such the services provided would not be as dedicated. The thing is while this issue is inherent, i don't see why bam need to be so petty to ban independent players
Money and control It's good that the issue is resolved, at least for now. But in my opinion, this is just the tip of the iceberg. In the long run, something has to change. Certainly there is no perfect system, but what we have now is nothing good. Badminton like any sport is basically a circus and the players are attraction monkeys. (Polish proverb, I hope I'm not offending anyone). Today the monkeys have nothing to say. Reading this thread I was reminded of two examples from our European backyard 1. Bosman ruling 2. FISA-FOCA war both cases were about more or less the same thing - more freedom and money for players/team/drivers. Both of these cases ended up resolving in favor of the players. In both cases the sport went to a completely different level after that. What we have in badminton today is implicit slavery, in fact some elements are a bit reminiscent of cotton farms in the 19th century USA. Profits are good but only thanks to hidden exploitation and lack of right to choose the place of work. If a sponsor offers for example 50mln to a federation with LZJ and only 30mln without him, then what are we talking about here. Players have paychecks provided by contracts provided by previous players, and this system is dependent from generation to generation. Take out one capable generation and the system collapses. The national federations should even be happy that at some point their players become "too big" for their local backyard and are given a chance to develop further. This should be considered a collective success. Today this is not the case, and it certainly has a demotivating effect. Maybe this answers the question of why so many players thrive until age 20 and then stagnate in form? Or maybe the federations' selection of players today excludes any "late bloomers" because it's all about quick results and monetizing the player. Would it be like that in other systems?
I cannot say BAM right or wrong in Lee Zii Jia's case, but in Goh Jin Wei's case, BAM may be wrong. We all knew that Goh's undergone many surgeries and she was not ready to practice hard. People take care much of Lee Zii Jia's case but not many say something for Goh Jin Wei. Now Lee Zii Jia's case have happy ending but there is still Goh Jin Wei's case. I hope fans and international players can help her.
I don't like Lee Zii Jia's attitude on court, but I have no reason to hate him off court. Thanks for mentioning to Nishimoto name here, hehehe.
There will be likely a fine? Getting blessing from the BAM president to turn pro is one thing but BAM will definitely fine LZJ
