Who is Fang Kai who could brush aside Lei Lanxi in two straight games, 15 and 12 in 33 minutes? Was Lei Lanxi playing with an injury or too exhausted after the Team events? Couldn't find Fang's profile in BWF fansite. Only know that he is from Zhejiang and he looks young from his profile photo in the Chinese National Games website which doesn't provide details of his birth date. Where can I watch a replay of this match if there is one? Kindly share the link please, anyone?
What an upset. Apparently Lei Lanxi is fatigued from all his matches in the previous rounds of the team event, practically no rest day for him as the individual event starts immediately the day after. Still it's quite unexpected for him to lose R1 to a unfancied opponent. Or, don't tell me, China nowadays has several hidden talents or unknown young prodigies just waiting to spring a surprise on unsuspecting victims (if only). I mean, even dark horses should be those who are not unheard-of, not some nobodies. Just found out, even the veteran Huang Yuxiang lost to a certain Dong Tianyao in two straights who's not totally unheard-of though. Btw, Fang Kai acquitted himself well in G1 to Chen Long , going down by 19-21, only to be routed 6-21 the next set.
Oh, wait, the lesser known Dong Tianyao after disposing of the more fancied Huang Yuxiang, then went on to send packing the WR17 HKSAR, Lee Cheuk Yiu, in the R16 in three sets, 22-20, 18-21, 21-12. Not bad, lad.
Chen Yufei needed three sets to prevail over Cai Yanyan, 20-22, 21-15, and 21-12. He Bingjiao took it convincingly in two straights against Han Qianxi, 21-13 and 21-11. No idea, beats me. Not only Lee Cheuk Yiu, the entire HKSAR team underperforming. Maybe it has a bit to do with the 14-day quarantine they have been subjected to before the start of the CNG, which they weren't too happy about whilst the mainlanders only required 7 days. ( As I came across it while casually combing for news of the CNG, not sure if my memory serves me right, too lazy to double-check, so cmiiw). Obviously, the National Health Commissions of the mainland and the two SARs have different policies with respect to the prevailing Covid situation under their jurisdiction, not something the organizer can do anything about but to abide by accordingly. But, let's not forget,all the Chinese Olympians who came back from Japan had to undergo 21-day quarantine just like any foreigners entering the country, for example, Chen Yufei posted videos of her 21-day quarantine on her social media.
Watching the replays, Cai Yanyan come-from-behind win in G1 against Chen Yufei albeit by the narrowest of margin, 22-20, was something. Then Chen Yufei coming back aggressively the next two games to prevail over her gutsy opponent was equally heartening to see. It's certainly fighting badminton all the way for these two adversaries, far from boring even for those who think CYF's game is boring. Cai Yanyan is a very attacking player, often a bit too eager to go on the offensive but somewhat wanting in accuracy. She needs to tighten her game and work on her defense as well, for against a top-class opponent, you must expect most of the shots to come back and be on the receiving end of their attacks and counterattacks now and then.
I noticed that whenever Chen Yufei plays for her province, Zhejiang, in the China National Games or China Badminton Super League, or any such event, Wang Lin will be there coaching her. The same goes for Shi Yuqi, Jiangsu, for whom Sun Jun will be in attendance.
Tan Ning in the individual events is still playing both WS and WD, in the latter partnering Huang Dongping, she's been eliminated by Jia Yifan/Chen Qingchen in the R16 whilst in WS she's through to the QFs to face Dai Wang tomorrow.

Another Chinese World Junior Champion who can't make the grade at the senior level, in his case due to a serious injury. Luckily he went on to get a degree during his hiatus from badminton. Many Chinese WJ champions could not make the grade at the senior level. Zhu Feng is one of them. Third WJ Champion after Sun Jun and Chen Gang ( who didn't make the grade at the senior level). Mention him because I saw him umpiring one of the matches in the on-going tournament. This man completely disappeared from the Chinese badminton scene after his WJC win. Best of luck LGP.
