Nah. The first 2 basic rules of badminton are
    1. Get it over the net.
    2. Get it inside the lines.

She lost track of those and basically lost patience when she was forced to play more shots that CYF got back. She has mentioned this before in her interviews...she gets impatient when her shots don't quickly end the rally like usual and she loses focus. I'll link the interview when I find it. She used to do this a lot... we've seen it time and time before in her early years. Off the top of my head, I recall similar loss of focus in Singapore Open final, India open final etc while ahead.

It is somewhat paradox to point out TTY unique feature as weak spot, taking the risk at everypoint single point of the game, even at the last rally at an olympic gold medal match. The reward of this play style is a really unique player with a very long success story, if she wouldn't play like this, then she would most propably be perceived like any other top 10 WS player, but not as the unique player she is now.

20 years in the future TTY will be remembers for her style, not for her medals, whereas CYF will be an other chinese top player with a lot of medals, but nothing more (sry CYF).

As said, I think we simply disagree on that one. ;)
We have seen her taking huge risks unnecessarily out of sheer impatience numerous times before and I know the interviews that you are talking about. To me, yesterday just wasn't one of those cases. I think she took the right balance between risk and patience pretty much throughout the whole match - CYF was just the better player on that court.

I'm more in agreement with your view - the Universiade counts for nothing compared to the World Championships, the two events are worlds apart, and in 2017 she's widely regarded as the best bet for gold, even Nozomi conceded as much when she herself admitted the title might not be hers if not for TTY's absence (how humble of her to say that).

It's definitely a regrettable decision, the more so when later events developed to deny her one major title after another, this Tokyo OG tops it all. You grab what's available in front of you now, the next time is the future, nobody knows what's in store. I'm afraid the real reason for her choosing to play the Universiade over the WC then has to do with politics (the politicians making use of her for their selfish gains and she's just a pawn in their schemes whether she realized it or not).

Well, you can argue there's no knowing for sure she'd win the 2017 WC but her not even trying made certain she won't make it at all. For the badminton world at large, who cares or even remembers what she achieved at the Universiade'17.

Imagine, had she won the world title in 2017, what would her badminton story be like today? Just ask her teammates who chose the WC instead of the Universiade You mean, TTY winning the world championship doesn't mean much more than being Universiade'17 champion playing in front of her home crowd, and in the presence of her grandma who could watch her live?

True, that's her personal decision and we should respect it, but still we can't help asking, " Did you get your priorities right? And consider the big picture? " To me, it's a case of "早知今日何必当初" (If I had known it would come to this, I would have acted differently).

Now that the Tokyo Olympics is over, and once again she failed to achieve her life goals, what's next? Is she going to quit or carry on a couple of years and try for a world title before retiring for good?

Sorry to disappoint you, Lin Dan is not a Christian - he tattooed the cross on his arm to honour his beloved grandma who always prayed for him before every tournament and to 'feel her presence' wherever he goes.

Hmm, 20 years is such a long time, I'm not so sure. Besides, TTY is not the only one who plays in such an entertaining and aesthetically pleasing style, for example, Intanon Ratchanok is comparable and she has one world title to her name.

What's more, Chen Yufei is still only 23 and very capable of further developing her game. If she continues her winning ways and collecting several more big prizes in her trophy cabinet, who would still be the likely topic of badminton conversation by then?

Don't be mistaken, I actually appreciate TTY's game more than CYF's till today, but the harsh reality is, for the great majority of people, it is the results that count in the final analysis, the same for history books. Unless there is a special award for the most beautiful game played every year , I'm afraid only specialist historians or aficionados would, perhaps, very occasionally mention her.

so ppl remember her anyway, she had all those world tour to show style. She shouldn't attend olympic and world championships at all so we have the chance to say all the major champions are lucky. If only she attended, none of them would be champion

But Zhao Jianhua not only played a beautiful game of badminton, he also had the results to show for.

Yup, I agree with you. If TTY made it as a personal decision to attend the Universaide, then that's within her rights to make such a personal decision. What annoys me are other people here (not you of course), who claim that TTY was some type of national hero revered by all Taiwanese for playing in the Universaide over the WC. That's baloney and IMO, really pathetic to try to paint it that way. Most of the other Taiwan players thought very little of the Universaide and chose to participate in the WC instead, because winning the WC would really make them a national hero (like the way Sindhu became a national hero in India for winning the WC). If playing in the Universaide was that important, the other Taiwan players would have stayed to play in the Universaide (but they did not, they opted to play in the WC, like CTC).

The 27-year-old Tai Tzu Ying penned down an emotional note, thanking everyone who has supported her.

“The third time I stepped on the stage of this dream, I finally made it to the finals, but I couldn’t stand on the highest podium. There is always a little regret, but imperfection always exist, only to be motivated to pursue better results.”

“Maybe I won’t have another chance to participate in the Olympics, but I’ve achieved this goal, just not so perfect.

“I just want to tell myself: Dai Ji-hing, you’re great! Thank you to all of you who have supported me, the results are always brutal and only acceptable but I try my best.”

“After the match, I was satisfied with my performance. Later Sindhu ran over and hugged me, held my face, and told me: I know you’re uncomfortable and you’ve been very good, but today isn’t your day. Then she held me in her arms and said she knows all about it,” Tai Tzu wrote on her Instagram account.

“That sincere encouragement, made me cry. I was really sad because I tried really hard. Thank you again for your support and encouragement. Thank you all for walking with me till now,” she added.

20 yrs, her name will still be remember as we are likely still alive and will tell our kids or juniors there is this player named TTY. But 50 yrs into the future, then i'm not so sure.

Probably only people from Taiwan will remember her for a much longer period since she is the most successful female player.

Much like why kids think Lebron is the GOAT because they never see MJ played.

For such a highly skilled player, i do hope TTY will be able to get at least a gold at WC or OG. I thought CYF's fitness is the only critical thing that allowed her to beat TTY.

Kept my mouth shut the whole time she couldn't make CCTV blackout the awards ceremony two days in a row after TW's MD gold.
I so freaking wanted to see TW shove CCTV in the face, back to back.
Kept not wanting to comment on her behavior and demeanor the moment on she landed silver.
    SO.
Why this post today? Because the whole Taiwanese contingent got invited to the Presidential Office Building.
She is STILL not over the silver medal, attending a celebration being moody as hell and giving a "here because can't help it" face.
I'll get to it in a minute.

While in racing they say second is the first loser, this is a happy celebration/appreciation event. Really, TTY did well. It's a silver FFS. Hate it all you want but it's what you reaped, might as well enjoy it. Not many in this world are Olympians, much less medalists.

Been happening to keep a close tab on the Taiwan players because Taiwan news coverage is quite immense during the OG period.
And of course I support Taiwan as well.
But honestly every time I see TTY, the less I am enamored with her. In fact, you could say that I am getting pissed off.
And I am here to say why.
She might be petite and cute and toeing the line between manliness and femininity, but oh boy does she know how to rub someone that is generally supporting TW when one side of the court are them.

I mean... apart from the cliché that TTY's greatest enemy is herself AKA her own mental heart demon leading her to self destruct (think LCW), she seriously has done little to try to win any new fans over. Want a history rundown? Seriously. Buckle in for the ride.

-Her repeat use of social media to pressure higher ups to right the wrong, and in the latest incident, claimed a ministerial post.
Sure, it takes 2 hands to clap. All the more when you try harder than the other to impact.
Using the open secret that nobody says it out fact that you're a national icon and WR1, she starts a wave of negativity to tsunami the higher ups.
Both sides deserving or not, you make the call. I am here to report.

So you think, ah ok, this incident, swing it that TTY is the victim. Sure. She crashed out early in Rio. I shut my trap on this back then.
But hitting the association, not using formal addresses and dragging two sponsors into a silent background shitshow sure helps your marketability or future sponsor attractiveness, I think not.
Fine. So assuming we put this as her being victim. After all, she bore the impact of this head on, shall we say.

Now here comes the Tokyo 2020 (2021) shitshow.

    https://chinapost.nownews.com/20210719-2658488
    https://www.taipeitimes.com/News/sport/archives/2021/07/21/2003761209

Just so we're clear, I am on the side those bloody ministers should cash out their cheques (and as of today, it seems to be the last appearance of the education minister) - stupid fella blurted out loud in March 2020 in Congress/Parliament(?) saying that he personally guarantees all the Olympic athletes gets to fly business class to Tokyo.
The catch - THIS IS BEFORE COVID got real bad. Even if that dude used his actual brain to think, he ain't no shaman who can tell the future.

So July 2021 came. COVID rampaged. Plans shifted. Business class no more, EVA Airbus chartered flight in; all first batch athletes sat economy, while the officers, lesser in number, occupied business class. Their seats are about to burn.

Once again, using the power of the cesspool that is social media - the flight took off, TTY took a Instagram (post or story, dkdc) in the plane aisle and attached words hinting how she "misses flying overseas to tournies on business class".
Well it is, she got cheated. So did everyone else. But it's a really selfish stand to hint. Why?
Use all athletes on board my dear, the wording just did not sit right; don't cry foul on your princess pedestal going into the OG as the Taiwan predicted favorite for gold and WR1. (Yes the prediction was 2 golds, 1 by TTY and 1 by Kuo Hsing Chun, a weightlifter. So she got more attention than the rest.)

Meanwhile her dad back in TW went on a media tirade lambasting every official and the ministry who had a hand in it, day in day out.
The news had his interview, a scathing one, blaming everybody and anyone related. In typical TW fashion, raging and wronged.
There was also a freaking 120kg dude who was a shotputter or weightlifter on board. He occupied 2 economy seats with his massive unit. And guess what, he made no sound. Lucky it was social distancing seating so he just sat on both.

My hot take: TW to Tokyo isn't like intercontinental, it's a couple hours, yes, but is it enough to kick up the fuss with a personal angle?
Wang Chi Lin was also on board, and he made a post on the furore that spawned, saying: Business class or not, the main point is that we land safely and play our best and get the greatest glory for our country. I guess we now know who bitch Karma smiled on, eh?

Returning to TW, on her interview she said "I didn't even want to look at the silver medal, I even had someone else keep it".
Couldn't smile to the camera at the airport and declined all interviews, left straight for quarantine.
The whole time during isolation on return she hasn't even looked at it, and went all moody and stuff. Low profile, and had no interviews during the quarantine. The other silver and bronze winners from other sports behaved the direct opposite, happy to have gotten.
Fine. Have some time to get over it. Is a month enough?

Come today, 1 Sep 2021, she STILL carried that somber mood onto the event carpet at the President Office, and quickly made the host awkward stating that "no there was no celebration since she lost" on the question "how did her sister congratulated her on her silver".
No, you won silver. You lost to CYF. That's all to me. It is fine, it's not a crime.
At least you look majority like a female, can't say the same to the one who won you.
Don't make the red carpet a walk of shame, because it sure as hell is not.
Just... lighten up? The milk is spilt, the train has left, that's it.

So here comes my (admittedly rapidly declining) view of her: no big titles (ala LCW but he doesn't behave this way), yet really, behaves like a queen, even if her on-court demeanor is different. This other side of her off-court is what irks me.
Plays small tricks, doing underhanded stuff, and it seems to be a carryover from teachings of her father. Runs in the family? Think too highly of themselves? The dad especially, what the hell of a upbringing did he bring onto TTY, for her to do these. Humility doesn't take a back seat in this family; it's held by ropes hanging off the rear bumper as the family bandwagon moves along, pretty much non existent. She can have a 55 million TWD building with her personal adornments loud and big but she ain't getting a cent of endearment off me. But who am I right? Throw me right in the trash where I belong.

Well, karma's a bitch, TTY still didn't land that elusive gold 3 OG outings in, no world champ title, no Asian title, the works, none.
Instead of humble pie and saying standard PR like she will try harder, she chose to wallow in self deprecation and exhibit in public her sorrow of erm.. "losing into silver" at every single available chance.
She really sowed nothing that could have helped swing that game into her favor, if anything superstitious is to be accounted for.

All this while modest Lee and Wang, gold winners who weren't even a predicted outside chance for a medal by TW, paraded, landed deals, endorsements, etc.
One bridge I am sure she burnt, is the gold cow Yonex bridge; see how LD sits on the lap of Ben even while no longer on active tour.
She really hasn't thought that part through, has she.

I want to like her more than I used to, but her antics really really make it harder as time passes by.

As I was telling my friend, players cheer into gold and bronze, but cry into silver. Shame it had to be that way, since silver > bronze. Right? Right? She still won 700k TWD for the silver, yes gold would have netted 20 million, but it is what it is, move on?
Or just not show so outright negatively; that achievement?

It's nothing shameful at all and honestly, whose pity is she looking for?
Just snag that in 3 years at Paris, and you get to queen all you want, people will then be blind and unable to react to the gold reflecting off your neck.

    interesting...

this is why i never expect an athlete or celebrity to be a certain 'person'. i don't know them. they don't know me. they merely entertain me. that's what i pay for.
