Host Japan quest for badminton gold medal will relying on women's singles category...

    CHINA ROUTINE
First badminton gold medal goes to China, thanks to their marvelous mixed doubles performance, comeback in international tournament with a bang! As predicted home favourites WataHiga put good fight to second seed Wang/Huang in opening game, 23-21 then the Chinese returns with their style, speed up the tempo, accurate placement to trouble their opponent, in deciding game world number 3 pair are on their element to dictate, no turning back and grab golden ticket to grand finale in Tokyo OG. Top-seed Zheng/Huang have relatively easy to topple HKG lefthanded combination Tang/Tse, 21-16 / 21-12. Huang YQ performance is on point to execute fast interception.

    MINIONS FALTER
Major event curse keeps alive, the dominant figures Gideon/Sukamuljo can't answer their big challenge and fail to clear MAS hurdle. Credit to the confident Aaron Chia/Soh WY who play superbly, implementing attacking mode since the beginning of the match to penetrate the quite passive and under pressure, less accuracy Indonesians. Don't see the eagerness, desire to win from the top-seed, mental aspect is suspected.

Luckily the Daddies did their job when it matters most, overcome the stubborn Kamura/Sonoda in three games, they apply brilliant tactic to outplay the Japanese in final game. Home representative hope in this discipline ended in last eight after Endo/Watanabe can't endure Lee/Wang fierce and aggressive shots. Li/Liu almost blew away their chance to medal quest, pushed into the limit by Astrup/Rasmussen who performing brilliant defense that frustrate Chinese towering duo.

    NO SURPRISE AT ALL
Women's singles present quiet atmosphere, no sensational headline like other categories, all seeded players march on and will showcase enticing action in last eight. Tai TY-Intanon probably the much anticipated tie to wait between two highly talented shuttlers who have similar style of play and deceptive shots. Chen Yufei is challenged by Korean teen star the fearless An Se Young, local hopeful Nozomi Okuhara is predicted to pass He Bingjiao who has not show any stunning progress against foreign top player so far, sluggish and uninspiring when facing Zhang Beiwen. The US player retired in early stages of second game after won 21-14 and 7-9 due to ACL injury. Rio 2016 silver medalist Pusarla Sindhu takes on Akane Yamaguchi, another blockbuster duel to notice, the stats favour to the Indian who trying to redeem her dismal result in this big event.

    TARGET SLIPS AWAY
None of Japanese WD secure final four berth, the category should be JPN stranglehold to deliver gold. This nightmarish result begins when MatsuNaga lost narrowly to Kim/Kong, wasting several match points in decider. Then FukuHiro who can’t present maximum performance, subdued by Chen/Jia in three games. At top half draw, Polii/Rahayu have prospect to get medal after involving in gruelling 97 minutes match against Du/Li and will take on Koreans Lee/Shin.

    ALL ENGLAND CHAMP OUT
Defending champion Chen Long proves his quality for major event, the experience bring the Chinese veteran to progress further. Losing the opening tamely, it’s mental game in second set, Chen stays calm and hold his nerves well at 19-19. Lee ZJ seems frustrated in decider as his illustrious rival start to be more pro active and placing the shuttlecock in difficult position that troubling the lost focus Lee.

The supposed to be interesting duel, Jonatan Christie succumbs tamely to the emotionless Shi Yuqi. A flawless net play, good tactic to construct rally, the Chinese takes command in whole match. The underperformed Chtistie looks hopeless, producing numerous mistakes and can’t overcome his nerves.

Guatamalan player Kevin Cordon creates history to book quarters spot after defeating Mark Caljouw and meets giant killer Heo Kwang Hee next. Top names, Anthony Ginting and two Danish stars Axelsen, Antonsen safely through into next round.

The Chinese have been really strong. Whatever they are doing seems to be working.

Looks like all their players are in top shape and ready to go.

    Impressive to see.

The winner between Viktor and SYQ will go on to the finals. I can’t see either Kevin Cordon or Heo Kwanghee beating Viktor or SYQ, despite the upsets they have pulled so far at this tournament (unless Viktor or SYQ get an injury, which gives Kevin/Heo an advantage).

The winner of Viktor and SYQ will be “in form” versus an “out of form” Momota. So an “in form” and injury free Viktor/SYQ will be the final brick wall that will stop Kevin/Heo from advancing further. In the case that I am wrong and Kevin/Heo make the finals, that will have been the greatest string of upsets and best MS badminton run ever for an underdog in the Olympics.

It's mind boggling that Kevin Cordon stands a chance to finish at the podium.
Kudos to the gentleman, it's almost as if he was born to create headlines at Olympics.

He'll be more than happy to take on Heo Kwang Hee in place of KM. Ofcourse not taking anything from the young Korean, he deserves a shot himself.

Nah, it happened before in 2012, but by 2016 it's back to more normal distribution. No doubt China has remained the strongest power house but other country doesn't exactly stand still also.
Japan just get the rotten end of the deal imo.....host country but not much advantages....almost like playing in neutral court.

Would love to see Wang/Lee get the MD - I've been a fan of Wang since he started with Chen, and Lee has come on leaps and bounds since they split him from Lee JH.

Damn... instead of the 2 dominating JPN WD pairs, we have the 2 Korean pairs in the semi.
INA WD has a chance here to topple Korea WD Sohee/Seungchan. Polii/Rahayu seems to thrive and win the big ones vs. the Koreans.

If Ginting can vanquish Antonsen, he should be comfortable playing vs. the defensive style of Chen Long next or he is going to face problem vs. CTC.

The way CL destroy LZJ in the rubber game, I'm not sure Ginting will have the upper hand if they do meet. Crossing fingers though.

The host country JPN hope for gold medal now solely rests on their maestro WS : Yamaguchi and Nozomi.

Really good matches today, unfortunately the two WS matches that I'm most interested in are in the second half when I'll be asleep.

    my picks:

    NO > HBJ
    CYF > ASY
    Tang/Tse < Watanabe/Higashino
    Zheng/Huang < Wang/Huang
    PVS > AY
    RI < TTY

hope AY will win but she looked somewhat uninspiring yesterday against KGY so I have my doubts

Head to head Nozomi Okuhara vs He Bing Jiao is 8-2 with Nozomi in the lead. But in their previous match (PEROUDA Malaysia Masters 2020), He Bing Jiao won. I hope Nozomi Okuhara gets her revenge for it.

Wow that’s so long ago. HBJ has slimmed down a lot now. However, she lost 1 set to poor Zhang Bei Wen yesterday that tells you HBJ is still terrible.

well, that's assuming that other country don't stay still
what if they DO stand still because of whatever reason?

for instance, no more interest from grass root because of no distribution of power (see how Korean interest is kinda dying)
combined with, no more money being poured in because the country don't think it is worth the money anymore without title (see England)
plus overall unwillingness of people with money to purchase the sport as main career cause it doesn't give enough money and is being dominated by some groups anyway (what happens in Indonesia to some extent)

Some thing didn't happen before, does not mean it won't happen this time. Under certain circumstances (economic development, shift of popular culture, government's program), some things do happen because the causes are there
