How terrible for Momota to lose like this in his first olympics on home soil

Future big champions have shock losses sometimes - he might be in a different stage of his career to say, Lin Dan (ie multiple World Tour titles, World Championships), but he's still got time for 2024.

I for one though, am more excited about MS now that Momota is out.

Sad. Missed Rio because of gambling scandal. Played badly here because of various factors (accident/covid).
Well, work hard and aim for the gold in 2024. Even LD was knocked out in round 1 in his first Olympic, and LCW did not lose heart despite repeat losses in the final.

Momota loss very similar to Lin Dan Athens 2004. A real shame. That top half now wide open.

This is just so sad, feels like wanna cry for him after everything he went through.

Not to forget, 2nd seed also almost lost and knocked out. its just mad.

and 1 of HKH, KC or Caljouw will play in Olympic Semifinals and have double chance. omg

Wow what was wrong with Momota?
Heo playing well, but Momota lost on nerves? Very passive, defense shaky.
Very sad for the draw and tournament...

    Well new heros to come.

What a chance for Axelsen now I think

Respect to Heo, let's not make this all about Momota.
Heo played the match of his life. He was not scared to play Momota as a lot of other players are. He had a plan, and he stayed true to that plan for the entire match. That takes some mental strenght. Heo had an amazing defense and an even crazier attack today.

Congrats to Heo, and now one of the semi finalists will be Heo, Caljouw or Cordon! Who would have guessed that?
