OK - the Spain one made me laugh :)

(Well... it made me laugh again - I can't abide that screaming cow, so I'm glad she's not going.)

Badminton England's decision to select Vendy/Lane over Langridge/Ellis for the Badminton GB Team is controversial, to say the least. The latter actually made a successful appeal; however, the first decision was upheld by a further independent panel (which, according to some sources was composed of the same members that made the initial selection).

Sure, Vendy/Lane had a better outing at the Asian Leg of the World Tour earlier this year. But what was else do they have? Yes, they won the Orleans Masters 2021 (World Tour 100), ... but, let's be frank, there wasn't much in the way of competition.

Langridge/Ellis, by contrast, are not only Rio bronze medallists; they are also the current Commonwealth Champions (2018), European Games Champions (2019), and the no. 1 MD pair in the UK. And, whilst their Asian Leg performance was nothing to write home about, they outperformed their younger compatriots in two later tournaments, the All England 2021 and the European Championships 2021.

I can fully understand why the decision not to select two players, who had, after all, qualified ahead of their compatriots for the Olympics on merit, is causing such a debate. And, considering the devastation, I can also understand why Ellis may be finding it difficult to concentrate on, and practice for the XD.

No worries, certainly there'll be upset in Olympic arena based on previous edition results.

To a selector, this is worth nothing as it doesn’t refer to current form.

    this is worth something

this is worth nothing. Unfortunately no Asian pairs to judge form.

this is worth something. A lot because many top world pairs available to play

    agree. it’s worth nothing.

It looks pretty even between the two pairs but probably the selectors may have thought Vendy/Lane are good enough to have a chance to cause an upset and there’s more development potential for a future Olympics. Honestly, if it was 2020, Ellis and Landgridge were secure.

it is probably a bit cultural thing when some governance body/the holy authority decides everything for the individual and it is very natural, but it was against all rules, Chris/Marcus are higher in world rankings are higher in Olympic qualification rankings and all other reasons are just made up, they can not be used as quantitative factors and they are not even defined any where, so it is just bloody unfair, personally for me this whole situation is so strange that it should have never happened (how come some panel decides who will be going but not simple points and rankings...) the funny thing that Vendy/Lane have much slimmer chances against experienced pairs and even for them after this stinky story it will be difficult to put things aside...

What does this mean for the rest of the tournament?:

Singles: 14 number ones + 2 best number two to last 16 ?
Doubles: Number one and two of each group to quarter finals?

How will group winners be aligned for playoffs?

I assume that group winner & runner up of MD/WD/XD will move on and then compete playoff style? another draw will be conducted before that? For the MS & WS only group winner will move on?

Only the group winner actually advances.

But there's 14 groups, which doesn't make sense for a playoff format.

Daddies better be careful vs. MAS and Korea pairs... they are tough and fast-paced. Last time, Daddies lost to the Koreans.
