New Tournament Calendar for Q1 and Q2 of 2021 21 December, 2020 TEXT BY BWF STAFF https://bwfbadminton.com/news-single/2020/12/21/new-tournament-calendar-for-q1-and-q2-of-2021/ The Badminton World Federation (BWF) has successfully completed a review process of the BWF Tournament Calendar for 2021, as well as procedures for reopening the BWF World Rankings and vital information related to qualification and seedings for the Olympic Games in Tokyo. BWF can also announce a COVID-19 Support Package for tournament hosts that provides financial assistance and details cost relieving initiatives to ensure tournaments can continue to be part of the HSBC BWF World Tour and BWF Tour in 2021. These decisions were ratified at the recent BWF Council Session, with numerous Member Association hosts consulted during the confirmation process. any tournament that fell into the prior tokyo 2020 qualifying period will not be used again for tokyo 2020+1, or something close to that reasoning. points earned from the 2020 all england are used.
There is talk that the Olympics would be cancelled and Japan is trying to work out how to do this without affecting their chances to hold future Olympics. Personally I would agree for it to be cancelled. It would take the good part of 2 years (2021-2022) to build global herd immunity from Covid. And that too depends on: 1. All the vaccines to work with good efficacy and minimal side effects. 2. The vaccine distribution channel not to be too complicated - as in Moderna's case with super subzero temperature requirements.
Samkool already explained it correctly on this thread. BTW- If you look at the development of the coranavirus I am very sure that the All England will be canceled this year. BWF has brought the Swiss Open two weeks forward, after which the German Open will be played. Both are qualifying tournaments for the Olympics and are played in a shared bubble. The players should not fly from Switzerland to Germany, but rather drive about 6 hours by car or bus in order not to meet other travelers. Even if the All England should take place in calendar week 11, I am also very sure that many players from Asia will fly home directly after the German Open to prepare for the next qualification tournaments in Asia from calendar week 13 (Malaysia) or in calendar week 11 will have their quarantine.

That's the official word now. Still, 80% of Japan's respondents don't agree in a recent news survey. What can actually happen in the next 6 months to improve the Covid situation? If they indeed proceed with it, it would be the most expensive Olympics ever with limited or zero spectators. Most tickets and souvenirs would remain unsold. Not that previous Olympics ever raked money for the host country.
sure. but it's still most unfortunate for the athletes. companies will lose money, but, it can be re-earned/refinanced/whatever. athletes lose time, and that's irreplaceable.
Easy to say to push back. Athletes who are ready to retire after Olympics will suffer the most. So many factors affect them . For instance, Some of the athletes want to win Olympics for the following reason. 1) Winning Olympics Gold for the Country. 2) If they win Gold, the following gifts , prizes which many of them depend upon. 3) They might be waiting to retire due to age but waiting to complete their last Olympics. If Olympics is postponed, Athletes will suffer the most. My small opinion. Opinion may vary from person to person.
Cancellation isn't the first time in modern Olympic history so we'll wait upcoming months whether Tokyo OG exists in this year or would be allocated in 2032. Yeah, multiple scenarios are looming if Tokyo OG runs as planned.
I think here is the correct place for this information: A BIG surprise for me !!! At the beginning of March the Olympic qualification starts with the tournaments in Europe. First Switzerland, then Germany and then All England, which do not qualify for the Olympics. A big surprise for me is that Japan and China did not register for Switzerland . Even if there are more tournaments in April and May the players from Japan and China risk their qualification for Tokyo, at least one of the important seeding places 1 to 4. So I haven't supposed that :-(
Hmmm... In the latest update to Japan's 2021 Tournament Schedule (dated January 15), National Team B+ was supposed to have taken part in the Swiss Open.
China might not even care about Olympics. Hows their relationship with Japan? Is it ok , good, bad? We live in abnormal times, last i heard Korea is feuding with Japan again. I'm really sure a lot of things will affect sports because of politics in pandemic times. Just look at China relationship with UK, doubt any chinese athletes will play in AllEngland.
It is not the first time sportmen/sportswomen are sacrificed. Indonesia could have the first Olympic medalist in 1980 if they did not decide not to take part That's why there is no need for big government to take care of everything including sport.
it's a double edged sword. for most of the world without 'big gov't' subsidies there is no $ for sports. especially for the non-major sports. almost zero individual fans give real $ support for their favorite sport, whether just being a fan or recreational participant. buying a ticket to an event doesn't really cut it. look at the 46 summer olympic sports lined up for a typical summer games. how many of those sports do you watch on a regular basis? how many of those sports contain numerous millionaire athletes within their leagues? https://tokyo2020.org/en/sports/ ... i see 5: baseball, basketball, futbol, golf & tennis. all 'major' sports. even within those 5 you know how unequal they are in various parts of the world. that leaves 41 sports that exist on varying degrees of gov't backing in various countries. winter games have 7 sports. ice hockey being the richest. obviously whoever pays the bills [gov't] gets to make the decisions. we're stuck with the fact that gov't is the most necessary part of int'l sports.
