    Following this thread:

    https://www.badmintoncentral.com/fo...rates-is-badminton-an-expensive-sport.187203/

I thought it would be interesting to hear how much people spend on playing badminton, focusing on the "more regular" expenses.

    Currently: 1GBP = 2NZD = 1.3USD = 1.1EUR

    Try to estimate:
    - How much do you pay for a court for an hour?
    - How many hours do you play a week?
    - How much do you spend on shuttles?
    - How much in total do you spend in a year?
    - Do you play singles or doubles?

    I'm using NZD.

I pay 350$/year for a club: doubles, once a week, 2.5hr, shuttles supplied (but usually, there aren't enough..), March-December, resting half of the time, playing with beginners half of the play time.

Recently, I started to play singles, about 3hr a week.
    Court hire: 25$/hr.
Shuttles: 4 in an hour, 3$ each.
Currently, the singles isn't sustainable long term, and I'll try to keep my court hire below 1000$/year.

    Currently, I'm unsatisfied:
    1. The club feels like a waste of time. There were a couple of years where I played a club every day. But I grew out of them.
    2. I can barely find singles players. When I do, the costs prevent us to play seriously.

Our club starts at around 200 euro for a year (excluding two summer months). That includes one training of 1.5 hrs, and 4+ hrs of free play possibility every week. Some additional options: play with feathers supplied: 70 eur, second training 100 eur, competition 50 eur.

    Tournaments are separate of course.
Summer play (2 months) one full evening per week is 25 eur, usually, bring your own shuttles.

I pay 420 a year for all of these. And 25 for summer free play.

    Gear every year:
2 pairs of shoes and insoles: 200
30 stringjobs: I string myself so I only spend 150 on strings, but it would cost 450 for non stringers, otherwise
    5 tournaments (20-30 for 2-3 categories): 125
6 tubes of shuttles for tournaments and summer: 150
Some clothes and plenty socks: 100
Usually one racket a year on average: 120

Around 850 by my calculations. So 1270 a year

Not including travel costs to away games (often 1.5-2 hours one way)

So the costs of the club is not the main costs for most more serious players around here.

I play all disciplines, but in free play most people play mostly doubles.

We do not rent courts separately a lot over here.

I am in US, $50 per month for club, 4x per week, 1.5 hours each (COVID restrictions), 1 shuttle per session roughly translates to $450, string jobs ~$80, that’s $1150 in recurring cost.

Here it is around 180€ a year (sept to June) for 2h of coaching + 4 hours of play on week end each week.
Shuttles are not provided for week end play that is around 20€ for hybrid shuttle a month
Tournament are 15 or 20€ (one or two draws) plus 12 high quality shuttles (~25€) and around 10 tournament a year (usually ...)
    Around 15€ restring per month
Let's add a 100€ racket a year and same for shoes
    That leads us to
    180 + 200 + 400 +150 +100 +100 = 1130€ a year

Which would be reduced to much less if I were not signing in so many tournaments.

It is to be noted that I play in a non profit organizations supported by the city (very usual in France). Facilities are fully provided and the association gets a lot of financial support.

I saw your thread earlier and I can empathize your frustration since I'm also from the Oceania region. There were quite a few players from Europe and Asia who have no idea how expensive badminton is compared to other sports here. I recommend listening to this particular podcast episode (https://open.spotify.com/episode/4ENkvMu1ANn3VjtKMAHEaO) featuring the CEO of badminton Oceania which gives a great insight what their prioritize are. Basically, they are focussing on developing AirBadminton, para-badminton and then professional/advanced scene. I 100% disagree on their goals and at least I know why things are so bad as a club player.

    Anyway to answer your question.
    - How much do you pay for a court for an hour? $25/hr
    - How many hours do you play a week? ~8 hours
    - How much do you spend on shuttles? $31 a tube, $5/week if hiring a court
    - How much in total do you spend in a year?
    • Shoes - I get new shoes every 2 years or when on sale, $50/year
    • Racket - Same as above $50/year
    • Restring - $120/year since I string my own rackets
    • Club fee: $50/year. Here in South Australia, there aren't many benefits to joining a club besides playing the seasonal competition/league (which is also quite expensive $12/week inc. shuttles). Clubs do not have their own halls and the state hall is shared between all clubs in the state. Most of the best players in the state play/train/get coached at a privately owned hall.
    • Court hire + shuttles: $12/week, roughly 30 weeks a year = $450/year
    • Social hits: $5/week, roughly 40 weeks a year = $200/year
    • Club training: $5/week, roughly 40 weeks a year = $200/year
    • Club tournaments, around 3 per year: $60/year
    • Total: $1180/year
    - Do you play singles or doubles? 90% doubles

Without getting into details, it seems that all of you so far pay reasonable prices, and some of you get some pretty sweet deals.
