it comes down to whether places will get a 2nd wave, a recurrence.
to which i agree wholeheartedly, and on an individual level it is quite easy for those of us with common sense to adapt: be hyper aware of your surroundings. unfortunately it's the people in charge making the rules who tend to overreact.

"what? 10/100/1,000 more people might die this week? oh sh*t, we better keep those other 9 million people inside their home for another month and make it impossible for them to pay their bills and put the places they used to work for out of business permanently. oh, and let's not give them any meaningful financial assistance either." how could they not realize what their decisions would do?

bwf's revised calendar makes it hard to believe there was any common sense involved in the planning.

Will they also include the first tournaments of the year that had taken place this year such as Malaysia Masters, Indonesia Masters, AE etc?

Chong Wei urges BWF to drop international events this year
    By Fabian Peter - June 25, 2020 @ 7:05am
    https://www.nst.com.my/sports/badmi...-wei-urges-bwf-drop-international-events-year

LEE Chong Wei has called on the Badminton World Federation (BWF) to scrap all international tournaments this year.

This includes the much anticipated Thomas and Uber Cup Finals in Aarhus, Denmark on Oct 3-11 and the Malaysia Open, scheduled for November.

According to the 38-year-old former World No 1, it is only fair to all parties as the Covid-19 pandemic is still affecting the world.

As tournaments this year do not offer Olympic qualifying points, Chong Wei feels that competitive badminton should only resume next year.

Commenting on top officials calling for the cancellation of the Malaysia Open in a Timesport report, Chong Wei said: "We are living in uncertain times and I know it's not easy to make decisions.

"But as a retired player, I believe my views are unbiased. I know it's important for BWF to get tournaments running again because television rights generates revenue.

"However, member associations like BAM will lose money hosting a tournament because they won't make much from ticket sales.

    ==================================

"It's too risky. Just look at what happened to Djokovic and the NBA players.

"I wish to avoid speculating but I've been hearing too many rumours.

"Will the Thomas and Uber Cups go on as planned? Will the Olympics be postponed again?

"In truth, no one knows. But I stand by my opinion.

"I think it's fair for international tournaments to be cancelled this year. Just start fresh next year," added Chong Wei.

The world governing body are expected to make several important decisions after their annual general meeting on July 18.
    ______

*It's complicated indeed to resume international tournaments amid uncertain condition as COVID-19 pandemic is still far away from over. We'll see whether September tour will go as planned.

Another low tier tournament has been cancelled : Lingshui China Masters 2020 (25-30 August).

No go for China Masters disrupts BWF’s restart plans
    Friday, 03 Jul 2020
    https://www.thestar.com.my/sport/ba...for-china-masters-disrupts-bwfs-restart-plans

PETALING JAYA: The cancellation of the Lingshui China Masters has thrown a spanner in the works of the Badminton World Federation’s (BWF) bid to restart the sport worldwide.

The Lingshui event scheduled for Aug 25-30 became the latest tournament to be scrapped, suffering the same fate as the Hyderabad Open (Aug 11-16).

These two lower-tier events had been listed as among the first tournaments in the revamped calendar unveiled by the BWF on May 22 in their bid to kickstart the sport after the Covid-19-forced suspension since March.

The China BA issued a statement on their official website on Wednesday saying they would not proceed with the hosting of the Lingshui event.

It was obvious that the organisers are taking no chances after a new outbreak has been reported in China two weeks ago. Covid-19 originated from Wuhan in China.

Following the cancellations of the meets in Hyderabad and Lingshui, all eyes will now be on the Taiwan Open from Sept 1-6.

The Taiwan event will mark the return of the BWF’s top-flight circuit since the completion of the All-England in mid-March.

The condensed schedule over the next seven weeks also comprise the Korean Open (Sept 8-13), China Open (Sept 15-20), Japan Open (Sept 22-27), Thomas and Uber Cup Finals (Oct 3-11), Denmark Open (Oct 13-18) and French Open (Oct 20-25).

The Badminton Association of Malaysia have made it clear that they will take no chances with the health and of their shuttlers by limiting their overseas assignments.
    ____

It's still highly doubt that BWF World Tour could restart on September judging some countries are struggling and overwhelmed to control COVID-19 such as India and Indonesia meanwhile others facing second wave virus.

I disagree with Lee Chong Wei. The virus is overfeared but actually not deadly, especially with young and healthy. So just put protocol like no person above certain ages, no under 5 years old children and of course everyone must be tested first.

Two BWF Tour Super 100 Tournaments Cancelled

    07 July, 2020
    TEXT BY BWF STAFF
    https://bwfbadminton.com/news-single/2020/07/07/two-bwf-tour-super-100-tournaments-cancelled/

Two BWF Tour Super 100 tournaments have been cancelled from the revamped BWF Tournament Calendar for the year – the Lingshui China Masters 2020 and YONEX Dutch Open 2020.

The Lingshui China Masters 2020 was rescheduled twice previously from its original slot at the start of the year (25 February – 1 March) due to the COVID-19 outbreak. It was initially postponed until May and then moved again to 25-30 August 2020.

Badminton Netherlands announced the cancellation of their flagship tournament citing continued risks associated with the COVID-19 pandemic.

The YONEX Dutch Open was due to take place 6-11 October in Almere, Netherlands.

I will forget soon that pro badminton exists... even stopped checking bwf news or everything from them. They should really try find other form for tournaments instead of just cancelling everything.

I still think national league system such as PBL is the way to go
Money will be necessary, but at least athlete can start playing in certain countries

Three top-tier tournaments most likely would be scrapped as China cancels all international sport events along this year but trial of Beijing Winter Games 2022 : https://www.reuters.com/article/us-...r-advice-on-chinese-tournaments-idUSKCN24C05D

    upload_2020-7-12_9-42-5.png
(Reuters) - The Badminton World Federation (BWF) are seeking more information from China about its decision to cancel all international sport in the country this year before they make a decision on the season-ending World Tour Finals.

The World Tour Finals, scheduled to take place in Guangzhou Dec. 16-20, have already had their dates moved once due to the novel coronavirus pandemic.

China’s General Administration of Sport issued a policy document on Friday where the only international sports events allowed in the country this year would be trials for the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing.

    BWF Statement on China Tournaments
    Saturday, July 11, 2020
    TEXT BY BWF STAFF
    https://bwfworldtour.bwfbadminton.com/news-single/2020/07/11/bwf-statement-on-china-tournaments/

BWF is in close contact with its relevant partners including the Chinese Badminton Association (CBA) to get more clarity on the situation and how this affects the BWF Tournament Calendar 2020.

There will be no further comment at this point in time.

    _______

Another possible top flight tournament cancellation is MAS Open S750 also INA Open S1000, the latter will depend on condition development further as daily confirmed case is consistently high so far and no sign of ease immediately.

Looks like they have no idea to plan in this very challenging times, pandemic plus economic recession.
Badminton League may be a good option amid the unprecedented long break of international tournaments.

Do more for players, Ganga tells BWF
    Sunday, 12 Jul 202 09:27 PM MYT
    By RAJES PAUL
    https://www.thestar.com.my/sport/badminton/2020/07/13/do-more-for-players-ganga-tells-bwf

PETALING JAYA: The Badminton World Federation (BWF) are not doing enough for the players during the Covid-19 pandemic.

So says the world body's former general manager P. Ganga Rao (pic).

"They keep cancelling tournaments and it's demoralising for the players," said Ganga, who felt it was time for BWF to think out of the box and help players make up for their loss of income following months of inactivity.

More tournaments are now expected to be called off following China's decision to cancel all international tournaments in the country, including the world body's season finale, the World Tour Finals, in Guangzhou in December.

"BWF can't just keep everyone in suspense and keep cancelling tournaments. Players, especially the lower ranked ones, have been struggling without any income for months.

"This may even go on for seven to eight months. There is still so much uncertainty. Some countries still have not opened their borders and there is no guarantee all players can compete. If only selected countries take part, it will devalue the tournament.

    =============================================================

"Other federations have already come out with innovative plans for players.

"Wimbledon was cancelled but still prize money was paid out to players. That is how you take care of your players during tough times," said Ganga.

INTERNATIONAL FEDERATIONS AND THEIR RELIEF FUNDS

    MALAYSIA

Olympic Council of Malaysia: RM300,000 for all member associates

Sports Ministry: RM10mil to aid sports recovery.

    ELSEWHERE

International Olympic Committee (IOC): €150mil (RM722mil) for members and associates

    Football

FIFA: US$500,000 (RM2.13mil) for each member association

    UEFA: €236.5mil (RM1,139mil) to its 55 members

Athletics: Launched a US$500,000 (RM2.13mil) fund to help athletes in financial hardship

Rugby: US$100mil (RM426mil) to member unions

Archery: US$190,000 (RM445,000) for international athletes

Gymnastics: 400,000 Swiss francs for athletes and national associations

Tennis: £5mil (RM26.9mil) to ensure players ranked between 250-700 receive a grant of £10,000 (RM53,000) each

    Aquatics: US$4.46mil (RM19.3) for 160 federations
    ______

Another critics for BWF, this time they're considered too stingy.

this exposes what bwf really is & what they are not.

they are the rule makers of rules that make little sense: tournament entry, ranking, player commitment, player ownership, tournament hosting.
they are slow to change the sport for the better due unqualified leadership.
they are powerless to make actual demands of member federations, but the members listen anyway, because
they are the only option available.

they are not the owners of professional badminton though the world treats them as if they are, and they act like they are.
they are not able to learn from their mistakes.
they are not able to significantly help member federations, and players, that need it.
they are not able to deal with change(s), like the current environment.
they are not showing any ability to move the sport of badminton forward.

they are, as you should be able to see now, a superficial governing body.

a professional sports governing body works for and with its members: nfl, mlb, nhl, usta, pga, even corrupt infested fifa... and they learn from each other. i have not encountered any instance to show bwf works for, or closely with, the member federations. bwf reminds me of a dictator. a very poor and unqualified dictator.

Sadly for badminton itself, waiting their AGM virtual meeting result end of this week whether they would release worthwhile decision instead of further cancellation news.
