A surprising announcement released by BWF about 2021 World Championships new date.

    BWF World Championships 2021 Rescheduled
    Friday, May 1, 2020
TEXT BY BWF STAFF | BadmintonPhoto
    https://bwfworldchampionships.bwfba.../01/bwf-world-championships-2021-rescheduled/

The Badminton World Federation (BWF) and Spanish Badminton Federation (FESBA) can confirm the BWF World Championships traditionally scheduled for August 2021 will now take place at the end of 2021 from Monday 29 November to Sunday 5 December.

The move will allow the BWF World Championships in Huelva, Spain to shine brightly in what will be a condensed sports calendar.

BWF and FESBA had already opened discussions with tournament hosts to stage the championships later in the year to ensure ultimate success of the event for players, their entourage and fans.

The decision to postpone the Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games to 23 July to 8 August and 24 August until 5 September 2021 only confirmed this move.

The new schedule will allow players to have a clear focus for 2021 in which they will have dual objectives of both the Olympic Games and World Championships.

    ==============================================
For the first time ever that World Championships and Olympic Games will come together in same year, what a busy and important 2021!

the Olympics next year is not a certainty, so it's good to have the WC later in November, where the containment measures should be easier to handle.

Indeed, it'll depend heavily on this pandemic vaccine, uncertainty looms, the worst scenario is XXXII Olympiad would be scrapped if the vaccine had not been available just in time.

The effectiveness of vaccines will be unpredictable. The virus may mutate making vaccines less effective.

It is good to make provisional plans bearing in mind flexibility is needed if waves of new coronavirus appear

Just scrape it, in this situation the Olympic title isnt the most paramount thing anyway , it doesnt give money and GV wont be giving money. Health is most important , players can have occasional tournaments.

Tournament to tournament, i think the risk in Olympic is much higher than normal tournaments. They (the organizer) take into account everybody health, so they might not want to risk it. For badminton players, its just another tournament. For the fans too , its probably just another tournaments now but Olympics wont be good if people calling sick 2 weeks after the show.

I just dont know what happened to those who already bought the ticket , which is not cheap ... will there be refund?

If the Olympics does go ahead, it's not going to go ahead the way we have known it in the past.

There is going to be more separation of events over a longer time period. This is just a logical outcome based on the principle of reducing contact between people in the presence of contagious disease.

Heck. It might turnout to delay Tokyo to 2024 and then Paris to 2028.

Nah, it must be more dangerous, we face the invisible enemy and the unknown time when it'll be fully contained.
Then LA 2032? Don't think so it would be postponed into four year.
An alternative suggestion to avoid delay (if pandemic still persisted) is without spectators but it's quite absurd idea and couldn't apply for the biggest and most important sport event like OG.

BWF likely to stick with existing qualifiers plan
    Tuesday, 05 May 2020

    https://www.thestar.com.my/sport/ba...likely-to-stick-with-existing-qualifiers-plan

PETALING JAYA: Shuttlers can afford to smile as the Badminton World Federation (BWF) are not going to introduce a new one-year qualifying period for next year’s Tokyo Olympics. Instead, they are likely to continue where they have left off.

The world body suspended all tournaments after the All-England in March Birmingham due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Following the decision, the world body were unable to complete the last six weeks of their one-year qualifying period which was scheduled to end on April 30.

All the tournaments during that time – German Open, Swiss Open, Malaysian Open, Indian Open, Singapore Open and the Asia Badminton Championships – were either cancelled or postponed.

It is learnt that the BWF are looking at using the same tournaments as the Olympic qualifiers next year.

“The world body had their council meeting via online and they are set to resume the qualifying period next year. They will only continue with the qualifying tournaments that were affected in the last few weeks,” said a source.

“This is considered fair as many athletes have worked hard to qualify since last year.”

BWF are expected to make an official announcement this week and release the revised calendar.

    _________

BWF will continue to calculate Race of Tokyo points from the pandemic affected tournaments, either postponed or cancelled.

Coates says Tokyo Games face "real problems" due to COVID-19
    May 22, 2020 / 8:25 AM
    https://www.reuters.com/article/us-...e-real-problems-due-to-covid-19-idUSKBN22Y04Y

MELBOURNE (Reuters) - Tokyo Games organisers face “real problems” staging the Olympics next year as coronavirus infections continue to soar, senior international Olympic official John Coates said.

Coates, Australia’s Olympic chief and head of the International Olympic Committee’s inspectorate for Tokyo, said organisers had to assume there would be no vaccine for COVID-19, or none in sufficient quantity, in time for the Games.

“We’ve got real problems because we’ve got athletes having to come from 206 different nations,” Coates told a roundtable held by Australia’s News Corp.

    ==================================================

“(Japanese) Prime Minister (Shinzo) Abe says Games can only happen in 2021. We can’t postpone it again and we have to assume that there won’t be a vaccine or, if there is a vaccine, it won’t be sufficient to share around the world.”

Coates said Games organisers would need to start planning in October for what could be a “very different” Olympics if there were no signs COVID-19 was being eradicated.

“By October this year, if there are signs that it is being contained but not eradicated, then we are starting to work through — and we’re preparing for it now — the different scenarios by which the sport could take place,” he said.

“Do we quarantine the Olympic Village? Do all athletes when they get there go into quarantine? Do we restrict having spectators at the venues? Do we separate the athletes from the mixed zone where the media are?

“We’ll have a whole range of scenarios we’ll start to address this year on the basis that the Games will still take place for the athletes next year.

“But it could be a very different Games to what we’re used to.”

    ___________

*The organizer should prepare multiple and complicated scenarios, assuming worst situation without sufficient vaccines on next year Summer Games but the show must go on for the athletes because no more postponement, it's 2021 or cancellation.

if no vaccine by Oct and there is a 2nd wave, it will be more cost benefit to cancel the event. yes, the money spent will be kinda of wasted and many sponsors (from broadcasters to souvenirs manufacturers) will demand refund. but think of the uncertainty and these factors.

    1. with no vaccine, you will likely limit the number of spectators (well, Tokyo might not see many tourists coming if the Covid is still out there). you may stage the events in an empty arena, but will you want to see this?

    2. some nations or sportsmen might consider not attending.

    3. more money will need to be spend for testing and preventive measures.

    4. if it is cancel in the last minute because of a sudden infection spike in Tokyo, then the cost will be higher.

BWF Announces Updated Olympic and Paralympic Qualifying Regulations
    Wednesday, May 27, 2020
    TEXT BY BWF STAFF
    https://olympics.bwfbadminton.com/n...lympic-and-paralympic-qualifying-regulations/

Following last week’s announcement of a revamped tournament calendar for 2020, the Badminton World Federation (BWF) can outline the updated qualifying regulations for the Olympic and Paralympic Games scheduled to take place in Tokyo next year.

The priority was to ensure a fair solution to the disrupted qualification system in order to qualify players for the postponed Games. Both the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and International Paralympic Committee (IPC) have approved the amendments.

    ====================================================

    Olympic Games
    • All ranking points earned at tournaments completed during the original Olympic qualification period will be maintained under the Race to Tokyo ranking list.
    • An extended Olympic qualification period will be introduced from Week 1-17 in 2021 and includes the select number of tournaments that were postponed, cancelled or suspended due to COVID-19.
    • These eligible tournaments within the new qualifying period must be completed by Week 17 in 2021.
    • Tournaments rescheduled for the end of 2020 outlined in the revamped BWF Tournament Calendar 2020 released last week will not count towards qualification. Only the 2021 editions of each tournament.
    • Such eligible tournaments within this new qualifying period should preferably take place in the same corresponding week from 2020 to 2021.
    • If this is not possible, BWF will allow sanctioning on another date within Week 1-17 in 2021 subject to approval.
    • Players from China and Hong Kong China will be eligible to earn points from the 2021 Badminton Asia Team Championships as representatives from those Member Associations were not able to participate in the 2020 Badminton Asia Team Championships in Manila due to COVID-19 travel restrictions imposed on athletes from those nations and territories by the Government of the Philippines.
    • This approach has only been implemented for this singular team tournament impacted by the COVID-19 situation as no other team tournaments are included in the extended Olympic qualification period. However, players are offered a range of individual tournaments to enter.
A revised BWF Tournament Calendar 2021 with the actual dates for these eligible tournaments will be revealed later.

    ======================================================

Race of Tokyo 2020 will be splitted by two phases according to revised BWF regulation : https://extranet.bwfbadminton.com/d...or Tokyo 2020 (ENG) - Revised 27 May 2020.pdf

    Phase I : 29th April 2019 - 15th March 2020 (completed)
    Phase II : 4th January 2021 - 2nd May 2021

Those affected tournaments that eligible to earn Olympic Qualifying points :

They should have put the year on the schedule. For a moment, I thought it was 2020 but of course, it's 2021.
