New scoring system will be proposed once again next year (possibly after Tokyo 2021), best of five, 11X5 => https://www.thestar.com.my/sport/ba...ill-play-along-some-wont-to-11x5-point-system Some will play along, some won’t to 11x5 point system PETALING JAYA: Badminton World Federation (BWF) president Poul-Erik Hoyer Larsen’s relentless attempt to replace the existing 21-point best-of-three-game (21x3) scoring format to a “shorter and more exciting” 11-point best-of-five (11x5) format has sparked mixed reactions from the national badminton fraternity. ============================ *It will favour to offensive player if the new scoring format is implemented.
I hear they might want to introduce best of 5 x 11 match points system. Anyway, if I remember well, Momota had frequently reached first half 11 points with points advantage so it might not be a problem. He might have to watch out for fast attacking players like AG,LZJ and VA because they are fast starters. If all they have to do is reach 11 points to win, they will pour out all their energy and not be afraid of getting worn out like when have to fight up to 21 points each match. But if the game stretches to the 4th or 5th match then it might be challenging for them ... However, I would also not under estimate Momota's abilities to adapt to the new format because he has shown that he was able to take lead in the first half matches frequently. Will be interesting to see if Lin Dan can take advantage of this format. There are advantages and disadvantages to this format. Advantage is players can continue to keep their career even when they grow past their youthful age. All they need is enough stamina to win within 3 matches of 11 points. The disadvantage is we might not see how players are tested for their endurance like when they have to go until 21 points and feel the amazements of how occasionally, some players can make impossible come back by catching up from far behind simply out of sheer spirit of determination. The game can be over before we know it. If you are watching live streaming and the streaming lags a few minutes, the game might be over. Might also be good for short but fast running and zooming players like Yamaguchi and Okuhara. But they have to do some good zooming in 3 matches. If it goes further, things can go "south" and they might lose because they will have to do extra running.
Is that still relevant today? I remember that BWF wanted to introduce that match points system like two years ago but if was never implemented mostly due to resistance from the asian associations. I also don't think they would implement it so shortly before the OG.
In Malaysian news, the president of BWF is pushing strongly for it again and not surprising some Malaysian players like Lee Zi Jia is prepared to try out the new format.
Maybe, they should consider keeping 2 formats of play. Like in World Chess Championship, there is the Blitz (very rapid) Chess matches and then there is the standard Chess matches.
I don't like this idea ... it doesn't feel complete! I mean a match could end with only 3 x 11 points? So the match would be shorter? As if we are not already missing a lot of badminton. Also this will make players become more attacking more explosive more rushing ... will that kill the patient game or wearing down your opponent game we used to see? I don't like it
In my country's top league, we've had this scoring system for a few years. It's kind of like a double-edged sword - matches can be very exciting but also end in no time. In doubles especially when a lot of emphasis is on the first 3 shots. Singles is less about physical ability and more about skills and variation, which benefits some players more than others. It's convenient for the organizers since total match duration is much shorter. It's worth noting that the level here isn't close to world class level - it's mostly decent European players with a few exceptions like Hans Kristian Vittinghus
Just read elsewhere that BWF is looking at chnging the scoring format again -11 x 5 this time. http://www.badmintonplanet.com/badm...-receive-mixed-responses-players-coaches.html I prefer longer games but obviously BWF are thinking of audiences not players. Games to 11 would take away some of the fitness aspect so would benefit 'sprint' players and make age less of a factor but would it add much else? I never thought there was anything wrong with 15 x 3 with scoring on own serve,, two serve availabe and setting at 13 and 14. Those were the days Thoughts?
21x3 for me. Im not much of an attacking player more defensive so ive lost count of how many times ive been down at 11 but won to 21. I think someone like antony ginting would love it though especially when up against momota!
I agree . The current format is already working very well. I really enjoy badminton when watching how players handle themselves with the current format of having to fight until 21 points system. 11 points seems too fast and to finish and I don't feel that it is going to be as enjoyable for the audience. Badminton don't have to be like Tennis. Badminton is its own unique sport. Actually, 21 points is not so long and ends quite quickly. It is the sweet spot. Not too long and not too short. If some people still want 11 points format, they can still organize special events but I hope they don't make it a standard for what badminton is about.
Yeah, BWF needs to think about breakthrough action to enhance badminton popularity instead of insisting to propose new scoring format idea on and on
One of the problems I hope it resolves is when I see some players give up after they fall behind (e.g. 18-13). Sometimes the issue appears to be drift resulting in one end of the court being faster than the other but it is no excuse for a poor show. There is little opportunity for a fight back (statistically?) once you have to score 8 points but the opponent only has to score 3. The question is if the dynamics will be that different with first to 11 and if it solves the problem of capitulation. Sure, there will be different dynamics with shorter games but is that really worse than watching players drag out a handful of points with little effort? On the other hand, mismatched one sided games will be over much quicker.
Like anything there is some pros and cons to this format. I personally prefer 21×3 as I'm not an "all in" kind of attacking player. But let's face it the 11×5 will push through. The BWF keep proposing it, one day it will pass. They want to sell shorter programs to the TV channels and these channels don't want all those 1h+ matches. They want to broadcast something exciting and fast paced. That's not really badminton from a tv viewer point of view. Especially for a non specialist audience who never watched badminton before. 11x5 will happen for 2022.
I guess the Malaysian Purple League was an experiment for this format. A number of top players like Momota and LZJ had already been exposed to the format for a few years now, so it's not going to be anything new for them.
