In that article Vimal is saying
"Srikanth is still 14th in ranking now and if BWF maintains this ranking till April 28, he can get lucky and still make it"
but why is Vimal talking about WR, Race to Tokyo rankings will be considered right? and KS in 22 in that list.

    I am confused now!!

Until BWF issues a final statement on Qualification, confusion will reign.
Srikanth Kidambi is currently the 2nd highest Indian after Sai Praneeth, 500 points ahead of Lakshya Sen.

    this was updated tuesday: https://bwfbadminton.com/rankings/1.../72/men-s-singles/2020/12/?rows=100&page_no=1

the explanation is at the top of the page. with the exception of the tripartite commission positions i don't expect any more movement of the qualifying players due to no more significant tournament opportunities left. continental championships would help if they end up being played... highly unlikely. thomas cup is 3 weeks past the qualifying window.

srikanth & sai are looking safe. in ms there's only room at the top for 1 add'l hong kong, 1 add'l malaysian or 1 add'l thailand IF one of them cracks the top 16. when you look at the remaining tournaments in the qualifying period and how many points behind they are you'll be aware of how important the badminton asia championships are to them... err, was to them. unfortunate for them, but fortunate for srikanth and sai.

    Thanks for clarification.
That used to be very confusing topic, esp because Gill used to point to Race to Tokyo rankings and say Srikanth is in the verge of not qualifying because he is 22 in that list,

@samkool- I’m still confused. Shouldn’t we be looking at Race to Tokyo rankings?

    page 3, section d: https://extranet.bwfbadminton.com/docs/document-system/81/1466/1471/Section 5.4.1.1 - OG - Qualifying Regulations for Tokyo 2020 (ENG).pdf

i have no idea what gill was referring to, or what the 'race to tokyo rankings' was using as a source. the above document has been my reference from the beginning. it always stated the world rankings are used, which made it easy to follow who is in/out/close from week to week.

The World Ranking Lists of 28 April 2020 will be used to allocate the athletes Quota Places in Men’s and Women’s Singles, and Men’s, Women’s and Mixed Doubles. Each list will be based on results achieved during the period 29 April 2019 to 26 April 2020.

as you can see there's nothing out of the ordinary in the calculation process: the prior 12 months thru the cutoff date. perhaps some folks were thinking everyone started from zero points on 29 apr 2019?

What is the significance of this ranking period, they could have just said 'Final Qualification Date: 28/4/20'

Looks like even bwf is not sure on what rankings will be used.

    World Rankings: https://olympics.bwfbadminton.com/r...=72&ryear=2020&week=12&page_size=25&page_no=1
Note: This is not a final list of qualifiers. This ranking is a representation of which players/pairs could qualify if the world rankings for the current week was used to determine the list of qualifiers. Tripartite Commission positions and host positions have not been confirmed at this time, but it is likely that a number of these positions will be utilised. As such, the ranking lists for men’s singles and women’s singles should be viewed as having a minimum of 34 available slots allocated from the World Ranking. Players presently shown in qualification positions 35-38 are subject to confirmation of the final number of Tripartite Commission positions and host positions, and also subject to final confirmation of the reallocation process for players in more than one event.

Basically BWF is pointing at both lists as potential lists to be used.

don't waste your time trying to think what bwf's thinking, or why they do the things they do. you'll end up wanting to break all your rackets and throw your bag off a cliff.

if you care enough you can calculate who will be losing points as a result of not being able to defend points due to the cancellation of all(?) upcoming tournaments. i can't be bothered. i'll just wait for the final list from 26 april 2020.

my assumption of srikanth & sai being in is based on bwf freezing points because of the forced cancellation of tournaments... which i believe would be the fair thing to do.

Since Olympics is postponed, Sai Praneeth would be fuming inside. He know, this year would be his best chance to participate in the Olympics. If it is going to be Next year, definitely BWF won't take the current qualification points but they will start the process again in a stipulated time frame and will find the players accordingly.

Lakshya Sen has the best chance of qualifying . I am 100% confident.

Yeah you are right, actually we can't have any hope if BSP is the only MS contesting from India. Best bet for India in MS can be LS, KS(if he gets back his form). Also Chirag/Satwik, Saina got another opportunity.
