    BWF Statement released

    https://bwfbadminton.com/news-singl...ZGdB7ORpAaeaphI7JCRLGlHGugITgIEtzj82dKpHLg_Go

    I'm not sure what I think about the ;

    The BWF can also confirm that Badminton Asia is reviewing its flagship event, the 2020 Badminton Asia Championships to be staged in Wuhan, China, and the BWF will support Badminton Asia and the Chinese Badminton Association in this process. It is, however, too early at this time to make any final conclusions related to this event.

    Part. Feels like the smartest move might be to as quickly as possible try to find another venue and place, rather than to think that it can be held in Wuhan this year.

    Who would want to be the officials there, besides locals?

    Some interesting details, facts and developments of the Wuhan virus (aka new coronavirus or 2019-nCoV) outbreak:
    https://www.caixinglobal.com/2020-0...-second-pneumonia-linked-death-101505300.html - Wuhan Virus latest
    1) The death toll so far as of Jan 29th (Wed) is 132, all in China;
    2) Total no. of confirmed cases have crossed 6000, of which 5974, about 97%, are in China;
    3) Not a single death outside China so far;
    4) The deaths are occurring in people who are old or those with prior medical conditions;
    5) As reported today, 29 Jan, Scientist Zhong Nanshan predicts Wuhan virus will peak in 10 days, read here
    https://www.thestandard.com.hk/brea...han-predicts-Wuhan-virus-will-peak-in-10-days;
    6) However, https://www.scmp.com/news/china/society/article/3048020/chinese-experts-say-wuhan-coronavirus-outbreak-will-not-last
    China’s ‘demon’ virus leaves health experts at odds on when infection rate will slow
    • Zhong Nanshan, the man who fought Sars, says wave of infections will slow in early February; public health expert in Hong Kong disagrees
    • Dean of Hong Kong University’s medical school, Gabriel Leung, says outbreak to peak in April or May
    However, the infection rate estimate by Zhong was echoed by Gao Fu, the director of the Chinese Centre for Disease Control and Prevention. He said he was “optimistic” that the outbreak’s “turning point” could arrive by February 8 if current disease control protocol is maintained.

    But “No-one can predict with any accuracy how long it might take for this epidemic to peak,” said John Edmunds, a professor at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine who specialises in infectious disease modelling.

    “However, I would hazard a guess that the probability that the epidemic will peak in seven-to-10 days is extremely low. April or May would seem much more probable.”

    When W. Ian Lipkin, professor of epidemiology at Columbia University, was asked to comment on the conflicting views about when the Wuhan virus infections may peak, he answered in an email: “I don’t have a crystal ball.”

    7) So far, WHO Declines to Declare China Virus Outbreak a Global Health Emergency
    The agency’s director-general said it is an emergency in China, but not yet globally
    https://www.scientificamerican.com/...ina-virus-outbreak-a-global-health-emergency/ dated 23 Jan 2020
    https://www.straitstimes.com/asia/e...-agrees-to-who-sending-experts-to-study-virus published 29 Jan, 2020:
    "The WHO's independent panel met twice last week, but declined to declare a global emergency."

    I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if the Lingshui China Masters is canceled, CBA could be waiting to hear from the foreign BAs for confirmation on whether they would be withdrawing or participating.

    Everyone, please try to stay on topic. I understand this is a global issue and we want to discuss the virus and its spread. it is ok if the discussion is logical and supported by facts. don't post rumors and speculations and esp ppl (including journalists) who conjure up facts. And most importantly, people are getting very sick and many have lost their lives. Think before you post. Be respectful. Otherwise, we will have no issue hitting the delete and ban buttons.

    According to that tracker, Hainan (where Lingshui is) has had 46 confirmed cases, including one death and one recovery. That makes it one of the few Chinese provinces that has actually had someone die.

    It doesn't seem like a widespread outbreak in that area but I have no idea what standard sports bodies tend to use. A cycling race the same week as the Lingshui Masters has already been cancelled. Given that this thread is about the BAC in Wuhan 3 months from now, though, the forecasts cited by Justin L are more relevant.

    Because the death toll is climbing rapidly and WHO also has declared 2019-nCoV becomes global emergency.
    Some rumors said BAC might be relocated to either PHI or VIE.

    Latest news about BAC host : https://www.thestar.com.my/sport/ba...esia-and-vietnam-ready-to-step-in-as-abc-host

    Indonesia and Vietnam ready to step in as ABC host
    Monday, 03 Feb 2020

    PETALING JAYA: The Asian Badminton Championships (ABC) could be held in either the Philippines or Vietnam.

    The Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) want the ABC, which is the last Olympic qualifying tournament, scheduled to be held in Wuhan from April 21-26, to be moved out of China - and two countries, Indonesia and Vietnam, are ready to host it.

    Wuhan is the centre of the Coronavirus outbreak.

    Badminton Asia president Anton Subowo stated in an Indonesian sports portal last Friday that Manila, which will stage the Asian Team Championships from Feb 11-16, could be a ready replacement while Vietnam has also voiced its interest.

    Anton said they would decide by end of February and assured that the annual continental meet would go on as planned, even if it has to be moved to an alternative venue.

    BWF statement about the implication of coronavirus : https://bwfbadminton.com/news-singl...-implications-for-international-competitions/

    Coronavirus Implications for International Competitions
    04 February, 2020
    TEXT BY BWF STAFF

    ===========================================================================

    These circumstances create a range of challenges and the BWF is looking into the implications of these travel restrictions, which may mean players and officials from China will not be able to participate in some BWF-sanctioned tournaments easily.

    The BWF would like to make it clear, however, that it will not be restricting participation of Chinese players and officials, or any other players or officials, at international badminton and Para badminton tournaments.

    Chinese athletes are free to enter events and we trust tournament hosts will provide full assistance and treat all athletes from all Member Associations (MAs) equally.

    We have asked all MAs and hosts to contact their national health authorities to make them aware that international players will be arriving in their country and to seek advice on prevention and necessary courses of action should an incidence occur.

    ================================================================================

    In the meantime, all normal tournament conventions and etiquette will still apply at badminton events such as the coin toss, shaking of hands and medal ceremonies.

    The BWF is considering all relevant health, safety and logistical risks and will continue to update the entire badminton community on any further developments related to the coronavirus.
