I was watching his serve very closely today at the NIA and he's always chopping the shuttle to make it tumble. It was only a slight tumble at first but as the game progressed he was cutting it even harder to tumble more violently. It doesn't seem like it's always difficult to return though e.g. game three at 19-18 he did a cut serve that popped up for an easy kill. I do have a couple of short videos of it but can't upload right now.

Small edit: it was game 3

I'll just say that out of the limited people who can do this type of serve, the principal is the same but the execution looks slightly different between them. I see a good angle of Aaron's serve here:

The commentator mentioned yesterday during the match that it was Lee Yeong Dae who first used it

Some fun facts of the pair:

12 months ago this pair was still playing at Level 3 competition.

They have not won a senior title yet, losing out in all 4 finals previously.

Their best result was runner up at 2018 SaarLorLux 100, and in 2018 WC, they reached quarter finals

They have represented Malaysia in Thomas Cup.

They are ranked 18 in the world, and is behind top Malaysian pair Goh/Tan at 14. However, it might be a different story next week.

Soh is from a badminton family. His father and uncle were professional players. His uncle is Soo Beng Kiang, partner of his coach Cheah Soon Kit and winner of Thomas Cup

If you ever wonder about Aaron height, he is 169.

Congratulations to Aaron/Soh for winning All England runner up... they might have get this far to reach final, only lost the very experienced INA pair Ahsan/Setiawan in 3 games...

Quite disappointing they couldn't get the gold. But kudos to Setiawan for being such a fighter.

Runner up already very good result in their very first Super 1000. Could have had gold if they had controlled their nerves in G2 by taking advantage of Setiawan's injury... why didn't they just fiick serve him?! But with more big match experience, hopeful of good results in the future.

I must say they look pretty nervous yesterday. like morten frost said, very stiff movement especially in game 3. it looks like they have no confidence to try something, and just playing it safe by lifting every single time, they look more positive in the sf and especially qf against liu/zhang.

Recall the 2014 Dubai SSF semi-final where Lee/Yoo played Boe/Mogensen? Boe's frustration over LYD's spinning serve caused him to verbally harass the service judge (something along the lines of: "you need to go back to india and change your glasses") and he wasnt even indian lol. There was several petitions against the danish pair following that incident.

Anyway LYD started using it, tho they chop it a bit differntly

Like Gillian said, they tried but failed to go past hendra at the net. So they gave up net and midcourt, and resigned to lifting to ahsan. Hendra was rock solid and supercool at the front court that day, nothing went past him. Before the second game interval, Ahsan smashes onto the net couple of times for trying too hard to end the rallies. I remembered Herry Ip telling Ahsan "jangan nafsu" at the interval which meant "control your lust/temper/strong desire". Ahsan heeded the advice and varied his overhead shots. The tactics worked.

I thought to myself during the game, if it had been Ahsan that injured his calf instead of Hendra, it would have been a completely different story.

Cannot go la this pair. I saw this pair play today and I can safely say that they are very weak.
Not in the sense of mental (weak too), but quality. They are unable to play high quality badminton for a long time without making easy mistakes. You can see the level of discipline of the KOR pair and Aaron/Soh looks like a C+ pair in my eyes.

Aaron/Soh should learn from their ex-national seniors Goh/Tan how to beat resurgent KOR pair Choi/Seo in 'never give up' attitude, or else they will never be in the world top ten best double pairs...
