I watched the replay of the Chen Yufei vs Akane Yamaguchi at the Asian Games Women's Team Final and came away impressed by CYF's game. She was outstanding and exuding confidence, admittedly, I've never seen her play like this before.

In that match, Chen Yufei seemed to have raised her game another level. Hope to see her keep up the good work henceforth.

No good, after losing G1 narrowly by 19-21, she's completely lost , so error-prone, just not in the game suddenly in the second set to go down tamely, 11-21. Akane avenged her team event defeat.

Consistency lacking, some more work to be done.

Chen Yufei, good job, beating WR2 Akane Yamaguchi twice in two weeks, at the JPN open followed by the China Open, is a very encouraging, morale-boosting and commendable performance, in the process even beating WR3 P V Sindhu in the latter event to boot. Keep it up. Jiayou !

Another thing, Chen Yufei is showing signs of maturing as a player though still only 20 years old, noticeably in terms of tenacity and shot selection; however, there's still ample room for improvement. Way to go !

Next, I'd like to see how she matches up against Tai Tzu Ying and Carolina Marin, not forgetting Nozomi Okuhara.

Chen Yufei's shutout to Tai Tzu Ying extends to 0-10 at the Denmark Open WTS750 2018 Quarterfinals, losing 13-21, 21-12, 9-21, practically self-destructing in the decider after equalizing with positive and proactive play in the second game, 21-12.

I suspect CYF simply lacks the inner belief that she can beat TTY , otherwise her coach Luo Yigang didn't have to tell her to have confidence in herself.

Nine Tailed Fox posed me an interesting question about what I implied of Chen Yufei's game in the French Open thread to which I expressed my thoughts and I would like to repost it here for the sake of relevance:

Nine Tailed Fox asked : Is some part of your comment trying to convey that Chen Yufei is basically a boring grinder with little to no imagination?
Or perhaps I am reading way too much into blank spaces.

My response: CYF is usually a simple, straightforward player with mostly textbook shots, generally effective at her best but neither creative nor exciting to watch. But lately, as she gains more experience and matures she has become more steady, consistent and able to construct the rallies better with a slightly wider variety of shots, including a bit of deception that was absent in the past; at the same time, she has acquired good court sense in being aware of what's occurring in the game and making sound judgements to get the most out of the situation.

Of course, there's still room for progress and at the rate she's going, I won't be surprised to see her within the top 3 soon and remains there for quite a while. My concern is that she lacks that little extra to top the field, the dynamism and forceful assertiveness in relentless pursuit until the opponent breaks down. Actually, Zhang Ning once commented to the effect that she finds CYF too calm and relax, almost lackadaisical, somewhat lacking in vitality, the will to win, the hunger to succeed and the tenacity to overcome tough opponents, so much so that ZN often felt herself unable to sit still on the coach's chair and became animated and got more involved than CYF, sometimes to her dismay.

Chen Yufei, Heartiest Congratulations for your maiden victory in one of the top-level events, the Fuzhou China Open WTS750. I'm sure it's especially sweet, gratifying, encouraging and memorable achieving such a breakthrough in front of your home crowd on home soil.

Wishing you many more successes to come. You can do it ! Keep it up. JiaYou !

After the press conference, Chen Yufei discovered that Head Coach Xia Xuanze has long been waiting outside the door. Upon seeing Chen Yufei, Xia Xuanze was all smiles and said to her :" Not bad, pretty good. Play like this at the World Championships and the Olympics and you'll get it. Next target is Tai Tzu Ying !"

    Congratulations to CYF!

She really benefited from the presence of the new coach Luo YiGang. Instead of grinding out a win,Chen Jin-style, CYF now seeks out attacking opportunities more actively. That would help greatly not only at winning a match, but winning a tournament as well.

Chen Yufei. A class act. She has improved beyond everyones expectations. Well done. She is certainly the top player in WS in China. Lets hope HBJ can be spurred by her play. All the coaches have done great and good work on her game. To beat CM by giving her a one game advantage is impressive. And also NO in two games in quite effortless fashion is something I didn't expect. Her attacking game has become a portent weapon, and her net game is very sharp. Its a joy to watch her play. It will be interesting to see them again in the HK open starting tomorrow. But I won't be surprised if there are withdrawals! Congratulations.

I suppose there will be a lot of coaches reviewing CY's game and will be ready for her in the HK Open starting tomorrow. Lets hope she will be able to surprise her opponents with her talent.

Right, Chen Yufei is gaining in experience and growing in maturity and has become a more thinking player. The best (or scary ) part is she is still capable of improving.

Her performance beginning with a narrow victory over Sayaka Sato in R1 and being stretched to three-setters by Chochuwong Pornpawee made me thought at first she wasn't in good form. On hindsight, it could be that both Sato and Pornapawee are in fine form while at the same time it could be that Chen Yufei was on the cusp of transitioning to another level and the first sign of breakthrough came during her match with Intanon against whom she enjoys a psychological advantage but the way she pushed Intanon aside in G2 and G3 was telling.

Then another more convincing sign of her breakthrough came when she fought back from a set down after briefly leading in G1 to take the next two sets against Marin. After that spirited win which was a huge boost to her confidence and inner belief, Chen Yufei was in full flow and her breakthrough was complete in the final match with Nozomi against whom she unleashed her all-round game with fluidity and masterclass display of top quality badminton.

After watching the replays of her matches with Intanon Ratchanok, Carolina Marin and Nozomi Okuhara, I noticed a marked improvement in Chen Yufei's attack and defense and an added dose of deception that was missing previously. Also I sensed that CYF has to a certain extent acquired the ability to think for herself during play and find solutions to problems she faces whether caused by her opponents or due to herself - I actually saw her on TV mumbling to herself and then nodding as if to say, 'Ok,I got it' even when the coaches weren't shouting any instructions to her as she didn't turn back to look at them in acknowledgement ( and it's not all the time that the coaches do that in between points). To my pleasant surprise when I read the above article, she admitted as much when she said," Having played many tournaments and accumulated more experience, my mindset is more steady and mature now. During the Uber Cup, I was nervous on court, unable to adjust myself particularly well, at times my mind went blank and I could barely cope with the game (instinctively). Now I can patiently and steadily find solutions according to the situations."

For now, if anything, the only area I'd like to see her build on is her physique, maybe by 5 to 10%, as I personally feel that she is at the moment clearly inferior in physicality to a number of her main rivals, such as Tai Tzu Ying, Carolina Marin, Nozomi Okuhara, Akane Yamaguchi, and the resurgent Saina Nehwal, not to mention a couple of the lower ranked European players such as Mia Blichfeldt.

I am not so sure about building up her physique. She already has a strong attack and great footwork. There is a danger of injury and a change in her physique ie body structure may cause a change in timing and her weight may alter her manoeuvrability. There is no harm if she improves her stamina a great deal more which will get her quicker to the shuttle and therefore giving her more options for deception, imho.

    Oww, that's a secret ...
    See. Experience!!!
Its amazed me, that China so reluctant to send much more juniors to much more worldwide tourney.
Imagine, CYF, HBJ or some juniors already many exp when she/he enter senior competition.
CBA must think, not all human has birth bless, some from hard works, time consuming exp.

Fully agree, also the Chinese juniors and second tier players are not having enough or as much international exposure and experience as their foreign counterparts.

Yeah, what I have in mind is not so much her build as to developing muscles like TTY's six-pack abs but more of improving her stamina and endurance to match or outlast her fittest opponents in long, grueling battles and punishing rallies.

Sadly, that's what He Bingjiao is most deficient of.

Now that Chen Yufei has made the leap forward, she is now clearly the leader of the pack of CHN WS, I think it won't be long before Cai Yanyan, Chen Xiaoxin and even Han Yue, within a year or so, I hope, not to mention Gao Fangjie who is having a brief spell of rough patch (she expressed dissatisfaction with her performance this year, adding her standard is not good enough and that she's struggling to maintain her form) - yes, these few junior colleagues may start to catch up and overtake He Bingjiao.

Then it's bye-bye to HBJ for her Olympic quest next year. Who knows, she may even be relegated to the provincial team where she came from, Jiangsu. What a huge waste of such a remarkable talent.

Yes, Luo Yigang has finally achieved in less than half a year what Chen Jin and Zhang Ning failed to do the previous few years.

Again from the above article I read, some meticulous CHN fans have noted that since Luo Yigang took over as chief coach of CHN WS, a number of the CHN WS have somewhat strengthened their ability to improvise or adjust their game accordingly on the court, especially Chen Yufei.

I feel some credit should be given to Xia Xuanze as well.

Though Chen Yufei is the first to end the title drought for CHN WS the last two years, it's only the beginning, she still have much to learn and some way to go before she's ready to reach the top.

Watched the game between Chen Yufei and Ratchanok. Morten Frost as usual was very professional in his observations. It was very obvious that Ratchanok was the commentators favourite as she noticed every little change that Ratchanok made from serving high to serving low. She just couldn't believe how badly RI was playing. One remark which I noticed when a change of shuttle was requested by Ratchanok at 13-7 in the second game , was a comment made that Chen Yufei was playing mind games in refusing the change. The umpire made that decision. I feel that commentators should not show their preferences and should just make observations on the skills shown by either player. She never once made the observation that Chen Yufei is showing better skills, power and fluency in her game than RI, and that she is the better player.
